You never remember you need to get a knife sharpened until you hear the afilador serenading you with the sounds of vague Ice Cream Truck music! Once you get over your sadness that you won't be having a Rocket Pop, you wished you had that dull knife on you to bring it back to life. Having never been able to coordinate having knife in hand when the Knife Sharpening truck rolls by; I went about looking for a stationary sharpener. Something that's harder to do then one might think in Miami. I found a few but settled on SL Service. I spoke to the owner Louis before I went in. He was nice and polite and explained the process thoroughly. There were no pictures of his work on Yelp, so I wanted to make sure he wasn't going to grind away on my poor knives and leave 1/2 inch of scratches along the blade. I saw some poor craftsmanship by other places, so I was weary. I took 3 knives. The price was super reasonable, and the sharpening was done while I waited. It took no longer than 15 minutes in total. They came out nice and sharp and scratch free! They have since been used to do some heavy duty cutting and are holding their edges just fine so far. So, if you are fighting with your food instead of cutting it you need to drop into SL Service and get those edges done. read more

I got my knives serviced in January, and I'm sorry it's taken this long for me to write a review. Luis, the owner, was very fast at sharpening my knife set. They were amazing after sharpening. We also spoke a little bit about good knives vs. bad, how often to get them sharpened, and tips to keep them sharp as long as possible. Luis also stressed safety when using the newly sharpened knives, like a responsible knife-sharpener(?) should. Given the COVID-19 shutdown, I image his business is closed at the moment. However, with home cooking up as people stay home, I'm sure there are some really dull knives out there. Over the years I've invested in a good collection of kitchen knives which have, over the years, lost their edges. I have decent quality Henckels kitchen knives that were in need of sharpening after about a year and a half of use. The owner was very knowledgeable about knives and sharpening, and impressed me with his explanation of the process, and how I can care for my knives. Although I was expecting to drop them off, he sharpened them on the spot while I waited, which only took a few minutes for my 3 knives. Realized just a few days before Christmas that I hadn't sharpened my knives for all the cooking we were going to be doing. So, relocating to Miami from NY just 10 months ago for business purposes, and not familiar with where to get my expensive Global knives sharpened, amongst other knives (approximately 10 knives in total), I referred to YELP, and it did not fail me. At first, being just a few days before Christmas with so many knives needing sharpening, it seemed as though I might not be getting them back in time, but Luis said he would do the best he can.
