Kevin Hackett hired us to put a split system in a commercial building, we did not engineer this, we did not size this unit, nor did we do any mechanical estimates on load calculations. The plans called for 2 units after the price was given the customer could only afford 1. The outside unit was now going to be inside the building, It was going to put the air outside the building with custom louvers that we installed. This is all single phase equipment. We got downpayment of $8500 and after complaints from the owner saying its not working I told Kevin put in on the roof and after 7 months of going back and forth with Kevin on payment, He than tells me that another contractor says I installed it wrong and the fan was going backwards??? This is single phase meaning the fans and compressors only run 1 direction. He says his customer paid for someone else to put it on the roof and it works now. I told him this was not my design i was only getting paid to install equipment according to your specs. Now we have a $10558.40 bill I have been not paid for. I have been very patient with Kevin tying to get paid but he just blows me off so I sent him to collections, now after him blowing off collections I have to sue him.
This was a little project that could of been dealt with easy if Kevin let us engineer this system, now we have to get a judgement against him just to collect. Sometimes in a contractors life we have to eat dirt, this is normal if we screw up on a service call or construction job you have no choice but to refund the customer and give it away for free. Kevin thinks that we will go away and I offered a settlement of $8000 and I'll go away with no response.
Kevin is a nice guy who got caught with a design he did not understand or ask us to see if this was a good idea or going to work. I feel like Kevin is not reliable and instead of asking a contractor with 20yrs myself and 10yrs owning a business is this correct and is this going to work with 1 unit and the unit inside he takes it upon himself to ask other people outside the contractor that is installing the system.
As a contractor I will not recommend you doing any sub work for him. I recommend you stay away from any projects he has or has coming up. $10558 isn't lots of money in the contractor world but when you have lots of customers owing you lots of money your out $235,000-$500,000 depending on your size. Kevin kept me on the loop by saying he has a big project downtown. I didn't care about that job so much as trying to make a fellow customer happy. Its sad when you take the downfall that wasn't your fault but you get blamed. Good Luck to Kevin but money is owed and needs to be collected read more
