Tony and Dawn are phenomenal. We have a 1920s era bungalow that needed a kitchen overhaul. Our goal was to maintain elements of the traditional bungalow style while bringing in modern elements, oh and of course within a very tight budget Tony crafted a fantastic design, brought many many samples for us to select from and helped us come to consensus on design decisions (he's phenomenal at carefully navigating differing opinions!) We also appreciated the contractors he brought in to build custom cabinetry and countertops. These guys (particularly Rocky, the cabinet maker) are true craftsmen. Visitors who have come by since the reno can't tell the difference between the original cabinets and the new. We love love love working with Tony and Dawn and hope to do so again in a heartbeat. I was referred to the MAS Design team by Grant K. Gibson for a kitchen re-design in my home. My home has been designed by top tier designers, and Grant assured me that MAS is a talented, highly professional team with an excellent eye and reputation. Plus, their office has recently moved to Tiburon (next to Sausalito in Marin County) so (just across the Golden Gate bridge), super close to SF, a huge convenience. I met with principal designers Carol Perry and Dawn Carlson, and felt that I was in good hands. They were knowledgeable, friendly and positive. As we worked together I appreciated their systematic process, and their customer care. I had lots of great ideas and, combined with their expert skills, together we arrived at a design that I am thrilled with. The MAS team works in a variety of styles according to their clients' taste, so I was happy that they could adapt to my vision for the space. Their process is professional and direct. Their systems for communication, drawing, purchasing, etc made it so that not only did I know what was happening (and what I was being billed for) all along the way, but also they shielded me from errors that may have otherwise without these protections. They also jumped into action when I needed things quickly! I hired Dawn and the MAS team to com­plete the de­sign and styling of my home in San Fran­cisco about 6 months af­ter com­plet­ing a nearly head to toe ren­o­va­tion of a clas­sic SF home with an SF Ar­chi­tect firm. We orig­i­nally used the in-house de­signer to do our in­te­rior de­sign and get us started with sourc­ing fur­ni­ture as well. While we loved them and their aes­thetic, once we com­pleted the ren­o­va­tion, it be­came clear that we needed to take a break to catch our breaths. Once the dust had set­tled we were ready to pro­ceed with adding more de­sign and styling. I have known Dawn for over 20 years and had been watch­ing her com­pany grow (i.e. stalk­ing her Face­book and de­sign blog) and was in­trigued to see what her more con­tem­po­rary ap­proach to our clas­sic home would be like. I met with her and Tony and Carol and af­ter hear­ing their pitch was ex­cited to pro­ceed. We worked over about 6-8 months (mostly due to me be­ing slow) to com­plete our en­try, fam­ily, din­ing and liv­ing rooms. I let them come up with a huge de­sign con­cept and port­fo­lio and then gave them a bud­get for half the cost. They did not balk at the chal­lenge. Us­ing a mix of high, mid and low end sourc­ing we ended up with a gor­geous home and un­der bud­get to boot. These are some of the awe­some ben­e­fits you get from us­ing MAS: 1. To­tal trans­parency: there are no shady hourly rates. You pay a con­sul­ta­tion fee one time, you pay for your pur­chases and you pay a com­mis­sion. You know ex­actly how much you owe and don't feel taken ad­van­tage of by some­one charg­ing you an hourly rate to drive across town to pick up a pil­low. 2. A team: they have 3 main de­sign­ers who all bring some­thing amaz­ing to the group and they work re­ally well to­gether; they also have in­terns who han­dle the small stuff so they don't have to worry about it. 3. No fuss: they lit­er­ally han­dled ev­ery­thing. I gave them money and they or­dered and re­ceived ev­ery­thing. They in­spected each item for dam­age and qual­ity and han­dled re­turns when nec­es­sary. Then they came and put it all to­gether and left me with an amaz­ing home. I didn't have to lift a fin­ger. 4. In­tegrity: If any­thing wasn't per­fect they found a way to fix it or cover it. 5. Fun: It was a plea­sure to work with them--whether in my home or out shop­ping. You can tell by the pictures how beautiful the room turned out, but what you can't tell is how much fun it was working with Mood & Space Design! This room was totally redone, new carpet, paint and all new furniture, window coverings and window seat cushions. I miss the laughter, I miss the shopping and I truly miss them. The antique/vintage trunks we were originally going to purchase were priced at $125+ each, but when Mood & Space went shopping at the flea markets and vintage faires they picked them up for less than $25 each. Same for the gears...we had originally purchased them at a wonderful shop in San Francisco - Big Daddy's Antiques - but when M&S found them cheaper at the flea market we did a return. Wool carpet? I was nervous, but M&S did research, sent web links, printed articles and came to a local carpet store so I could see the difference and be reassured it could weather the family and the dog! They know how to stay on budget...they always had a spreadsheet handy with the latest expenses and time worked. One example of how you can tell they "know their stuff"... We special ordered a fabric bench coffee table from a well known national furniture company. When it arrived I just didn't like the color, it looked different from the picture. Unbeknownst to me M&S had specifically worked out a "full refund" vs. 50% refund due to the fact the company could not provide a fabric sample! When we received a call on a Friday night..."you need to go to Petaluma to look at a coffee table"...we jumped in the car the next day. The table was beautiful, they gave us a discount because of their relationship with M&S and we drove it home. I think the coffee table pulls the whole room together. Their vendors are amazing! Pillows, covered seat cushions and window coverings by a fabulous vendor who delivered ahead of schedule. How do you get heavy metal gears in a stand at a great price, call Tony & Dawn at Mood & Space, their fabricator is fantastic. Tony & Dawn were in constant contact with the furniture company, carpeting company & installers and we knew as it happened where things were in the timeline. MAS Design took our home to the NEXT level. We found MAS through a recommendation and from first meeting we knew it was a go. How to describe this fantastic and creative team? Open. Transparent. Good listeners. FUN! Professionals. Visionaries. I really could go on and on - but it's best experienced. We recently did a major remodel and Dawn, Carol & Emma came in to pull it all together. They were exactly what was needed! From initial meetings to concept presentation to nitty-gritty ordering details they were always responsive, always willing to listen and most importantly give you that lil' nudge we all need when it comes down to it. We recently finished a remodel of our mid-century kitchen and we couldn't be more thrilled with the results. Tony and Dawn are amazing and their eye for design is impeccable...what I was most impressed with was how detailed they were and that they listened to our needs. We wanted a kitchen that looked great but was also functional, and they delivered! My wife and I both work, so it was important to us to know that they were there to handle all the small details and be on site to work with contractors, handymen, etc. No doubt, remodeling a kitchen is stressful but Tony and Dawn were so accommodating and made the project much easier than it would have been otherwise. The final photo shoot was bittersweet -- everything looked amazing but we were a little sad the project was over since working with Tony and Dawn was such a pleasure. I had the great pleasure of meeting and working with both Dawn and Carol, two very powerful women from Mas Design. Dawn contacted me via Instagram after I photographed one of her fantastic interior designs for a third party. Those designs and images brought an amazing amount of traffic to my site. I loved photographing her project. Dawns asked to meet for coffee to create a connection that may or may not end up in another project. I think we both went into that meeting not necessarily knowing where it would lead us. By the end of her tea and my latte, I felt like I just talked to a friend I have not seen in years. Dawn's warm and extremely welcoming energy made our get-together so much fun. Her honest feedback on several different topics and her openness in helping me out (even though we just met) was very touching. Of course, this meeting ended up in a conversation about Dawn and Carol's new website and their need for headshots. I could not have been more happy to offer her my service ;) The day of the shoot went as expected. At my arrival, the two women were already ready for the shoot. Hair, makeup, and outfits were ready to go. The professionalism was easy to see and feel, and the shooting went extremely well. We hired MAS Design to help us with our home in San Francisco and couldn't have been happier with how it turned out. The project involved some construction (replacement of wood floors, paint and wallpaper and alterations to a wall) but mostly styling. Having had disappointing experiences with design professionals in the past, we were hesitant to hire a design firm. But from the beginning the MAS team was open and transparent about the process and made us feel comfortable that we had made the right choice. We wanted to keep a few pieces of existing furniture and they were willing to work with us to do so (and be honest when they felt something wouldn't work). We liked their aesthetic and how it mixed with ours--the result was that our house came to together in a beautiful way but our personal tastes and preferences were respected. That said, our goal in hiring a design team was to find pieces and create a look that we couldn't do ourselves--they certainly did that!! As a busy professional I appreciated that they were able to handle much of our communication through email but were happy to meet or jump on the phone when we wanted. It was nice to know that regardless of whom I spoke to or emailed with about an issue or problem, the entire MAS team would receive the information and work together to resolve it. The fact that they work so well together and compliment each other really showed in their work. I also really appreciated that they handled all of the purchases and installation--it was so wonderful to come home on install day and walk through our beautifully designed house! Every evening, when we sit in our living room to relax at the end of a day, the calm we feel is directly attributable to the design they created. Yay! It is fitting that I FINALLY write this review today, as today I am finally completing the last few touches of the look that Dawn and Tony helped me create in my San Francisco studio apartment. Living in a small space can be a challenge, especially for someone who loves unique pieces of art and furniture, and has a compulsion to collect them. Since I can't fit too much in my space, I've found that I like to redo the apartment every few years just to keep things feeling fresh and new. Usually I do this by moving my furniture around and getting a new houseplant. Not this time! This time I wanted something bolder! This time I called in the experts. Dawn and Tony were referred to me by a friend, and they did not disappoint. Over the course of two or three meetings, they carefully listened to my wants and translated them into a bold but cohesive palette for each room of my small home. It's definitely not easy to create distinct personalities for each living area in a small space while still maintaining a cohesive look from room to room, but Dawn and Tony made it seem that way. I'm so happy with the result! They are warm and funny, and extremely adept at translating your jumble of thoughts into fantastic spaces. They also work fantastically well together, pushing each other to think in new and fresh ways. I enjoyed every bit of working with them, and I hope I have the occasion to do so again. Rather than write a review of MAS Design, I figured I should share my direct feedback I sent them after their final photo shoot in my home. It really says it all... (For context, I hired MAS to renovate my kitchen, which ended up "creeping" into my living and dining room, then also my bathroom and upstairs loft.) It's been a busy year! Team MAS! WOW and OMG!!! I just arrived home from an extremely crazy day and am completely blown away by the incredibly beautiful styling that you all did today! What an incredible joy and surprise it was to walk into my lovely home and discover all of the neat little surprises in every nook and cranny! Mere words can not express how I feel right now...but I'll try... I LOVE everything and can't stop smiling! I LOVE the way you incorporated my items into the design. The house FEELS like me... you captured my very essence and I'm so so grateful. I wish you all could have been here to see my face when I turned on the lights...I wish you could have felt how my heart literally skipped a beat, how my eyes filled with tears of joy, how my mind raced and immediately erased all of the crazy moments of this very intense yearlong project! Seeing the final product makes all of the personal and financial sacrifices oh so worth it! Tony and Dawn helped me prioritize and make decisions on a number of planned upgrades for my 1917 apartment. They helped me pick between flooring alternatives for my kitchen floor and made design tweaks on a concept I had in mind. Another item we worked on was window coverings that could work for a building of this era and they made a great suggestion that as I planned to phase in the window coverings that I get all the windows measured at the same time so that the window store doesn't need to come back every time I am ready for two new window coverings. They also helped me place a cute old train rack that I love but needed help siting. Tony also suggested I not get rid of my shower doors and replace them with a curved curtain given the dimensions of the room. Dawn offered advice on bathroom floor materials and colors I was considering bringing up points I had never considered. She also suggested a pendant lamp in the kitchen which I am looking forward to trying out. Tony and Dawn worked with my budget and were efficient and knowledgeable. Call them!
