Good food, but don't expect gourmet-level.
We recently went…read morefor dinner at Seehaus Keller after finding it online at Südtiroler-Weinstrasse.it under the section "gourmet-style"
First off, the things we liked:
⁃ Restaurant was open on a Tuesday evening (as Tuesday seems to be the day that a lot of other restaurants stay closed)
⁃ We did not need a reservation and were seated outside on the beautiful terrace
⁃ We were given disinfectant upon arrival and were asked to provide a COVID vaccination certificate, ensuring that all guests and the location itself was properly handling the COVID situation
⁃ Service personnel always served the women first, men second, which showed attention to detail
⁃ All courses were properly explained as they were presented at the table
⁃ Food was of good quality (however, NOT gourmet-level; I'll come to that in a second)
Things we didn't like:
⁃ We were not given a regular menu for drinks, therefore somewhat limiting our choices (sure, we could have asked, but do I have to do that at a location that wants to be above-average?)
⁃ Time between the courses (we ordered appetizers, first course, second course and desert) were a bit too long (we spent roughly 2,5hrs at the restaurant for the 4 courses)
⁃ Food was not gourmet-level (see below for details)
The food:
We started off with sashimi style amberfish (Bernsteinfisch) served with gazpacho and venison tartar (Hirsch-Tartar). Both dishes had a fine taste, but lacked a "wow-factor".
We continued with pasta in Arabiata sauce, topped with lobster and fregola sarda with pecorino and Mediterranean vegetables. Unfortunately, the arabiata sauce lacked spiciness, and the fregola sarda's overall composition lacked flavor and felt like something any of us could prepare in our own kitchen. On the plus side, the pasta was served al-dente to the point.
For the main course, we shared a serving of veal tartar, which was listed as slightly-roasted (angebraten) on the menu, something that intrigued us. We expected tenderness and an extra punch from the roast, but eventually received something that looked like an undercooked burger-patty. The cooking stage took away the tenderness of the tartar and the optical appeal of the dish, and the fact that we were eating Lukewarm tartar almost felt like we were given a low-quality dish (after all, we were expecting, fresh, tender, red meat, and not a lukewarm, grayish "burger").
The two desserts (variation of coffee-flavored mouses, brownie and icecream + white chocolate mouse, salted caramel ice cream and pear-cake were the highlight of the meal.
At a total of 140 EUR for all 5 dishes, plus a bottle of local red-wine, we left the location feeling slightly underwhelmed (especially after having dined at the Gault-&-Millau-awarded "Luis und die Buabm" Restaurant the night before with a truly excellent dinner experience).
If you are looking for "good" quality, go and try the Seehaus Keller. If you are looking for a gourmet-experience, chose another place instead.
