I just want to share what a GREAT experience I had with Ryan Lawn & Tree! On Monday morning, a large tree limb fell from our silver maple onto our front yard. I called Ryan--as a new customer, on the recommendation of our neighbors--to see if they could take care of the limb and, if so, how quickly, and how much it might cost. I spoke with Cindy in reception. She was delightful!! She was kind and reassuring and took down all our information. She promised that someone would be able to stop by to give us a free estimate on the job (even if we weren't home) and would email us with the details. Within 2 hours, Jared (their arborist) knocked on our door. He was very professional, friendly and patient in answering all my questions. We talked about the cost estimate and, while he was there, I showed him the brush pile in our back yard that also needed to be hauled away. He was able to give me an estimate for the combined jobs and promised to expedite the scheduling once we formally approved the estimate. Jared was as good as his word; he sent us the estimate before the end of the day, and my husband and I talked about it and were able to send him our approval by the next afternoon (Tuesday). By 12:00 noon on Wednesday, the crew was at our home to take care of both the tree limb and the brush pile. They worked very efficiently, and within a few hours had both jobs done and completely cleaned up the areas. WOW!! From start to finish, the tree limb--and the brush pile--were completely taken care of, at a reasonable cost, by folks who were both incredibly friendly and great at their jobs. We've been using Ryan now for about four years to service our sprinkler system and have experienced both highs and lows, really depending on who our tech is. So, let's start with the good. First of all, the technician we had for the first two years or so my husband and I really liked. He was honest, friendly, and gave us good advice. Our system was ancient, and he used to joke that we may be the last folks in the metro with that kind of set up, but never pressured us to upgrade. Now the not so great: After he left, or they reassigned us to a new person, we've had probably two or three different people come out, and they've been okay. Eventually we caved and agreed it was time to put in an upgraded control panel, so we went with what they recommended, purchased the control panel through Ryan, and had Ryan install it. All in all I thought it was a bit more than it should be given the price of the panel from Costco, but to spare any hassle and have it taken care of seemed okay. If it had ended here I think I'd probably give Ryan five stars, but unfortunately it did not. That control panel broke within six months of us having it and it took us months and months of back and forth to get Ryan to do anything about it. Their initial response was that "oh this brand always breaks and we have issues with them" okay, so why did you even sell this to us then? They had us work through the manufacturer to get a replacement rather than through them, despite us purchasing it from them, and even the replacement didn't work. It took us a very long time to get the issue resolved, and took my husband debating the issue at length on the phone with their manager who was unwilling to help for a long while. Eventually we got it all squared away and we now have a functioning system, but it did cost us much more than it should have. IMO, if a company sells you a product and the product doesn't work you shouldn't have to pay any extra to get a functioning product. We ended up having to not only work with the manufacturer to get replacements, but we also had to pay another install fee despite it being a buggy product from the beginning. It was just really poor customer service. I'm not sure if we'll stick with Ryan for the long haul, but for now we're still giving them a second try. Most folks in our neighborhood use them and seem to be satisfied so we're hoping this is a one off and that any future customer service issues will be handled better. read more

Our yard of tall fescue was invaded by Bermuda grass. Ryan Lawn & Tree had been doing a marginal job of maintaining our yard. The area that was invaded was small about 30 X 30 feet. I asked for an estimate to spray and get rid of the invading grass. The estimate (sit down you won't believe this) $16,378.91. Not kidding. Plus the estimate had this disclaimer "Remove one foot of soil to reduce how quickly the Bermuda will come back" So I have to take a semester of expenses for my grandson to delay Bermuda coming back and presumably cough up another $16K. No way, switching to another service. Unreal! read more

I unfortunately cannot recommend lawn care services through Ryan Lawn & Tree. We contacted Ryan this past Spring for professional help for our yard. We have a small front yard and slightly larger backyard in a older neighborhood with many large/established trees. We told Ryan in the Spring that we wanted the full service lawn care with all of the ongoing/preventative maintenance, plus over seeding and seeding our (many) bare spots in the Fall, per their recommendation. Our ongoing maintenance is never communicated, they just show up, if we are lucky, and then we get a bill. This has made it challenging with a gate we keep locked. And because they never tell you when they are coming, don't expect to ever speak to your rep about your yard. In addition to the lack of communication on ongoing maintenance, we never heard from anyone at Ryan to schedule our fall seeding. When we called to check when they would be coming, they said they had no record of us wanting that service. Any professional that would look at our yard in our current state would know that we clearly were seeking seeding services and not just ongoing/preventative care. After much back and forth, our rep agreed to come talk about the plan for seeding. When I asked what they were going to do with the different types of grass in the very front of our yard he said 'oh, well if you wanted all of your grass to look the same, we needed to kill that part in July. So you will have to wait for Spring for that part now, and it is honestly going to look like shit because they are both going to grow back in differently and at different times." OK, cool, so that would have been helpful to know when we hired Ryan as the professionals to help us with our lawn. I thought we were hiring their service to advise us on things like this. When Ryan did show up to seed our yard that they already told us is going to look bad this Spring, they did a lazy job. They didn't aerate the westside of our lawn and flung grass seed not only all into our flower beds, but in to our neighbor's flower beds and yard as well. I always try to give companies the benefit of the doubt before posting a review. When I spoke to Ryan this morning, they told me, after interrupting me, that flinging seed into flower beds and neighbor's yards was "normal" given the machines they use, and our houses must be close together. When I told them I am now going to have to dig grass out of my flowerbeds/gardens, they told me they sprayed my beds to keep the grass from growing. Which was never discussed as a part of our plan, nor is it is something I would have felt comfortable with as our garden beds are still filled with tomato plants. I can't imagine how they could have possibly sprayed in the garden beds to kill the grass seed they flung everywhere, and not gotten this same spray all over the tomato plants in that bed. Either way, this should have absolutely been discussed with us prior to them doing it. That however would have required actual communication from our rep. To make matters worse, our rep provided no information on how to now take care of the $450 of grass seed. No recommendation on how to water, when to water, what to look for, etc. We of course were able to google all of these things ourselves, but I feel like having to look it all up on our own completely defeats the purpose of paying professionals for this service. We didn't pay for services this entire summer and $450 for seeding this fall to feel like we just need to cross our fingers that our lawn looks better in the Spring. I chose Ryan Lawn & Tree after reading many great reviews. I now feel confident these great reviews are for people in "fancy" neighborhoods in the KC metro area where they can place their little flags and drum up more business. They don't seem to care about people in a neighborhood like mine. I am certain they don't fling grass into flowerbeds and neighbor's yards in places like Leawood. just overall not a great company to work with, Luke is friendly but that where it ends. consistent issues and misquotes and in the end subpar work. used Luke for multiple sod installs and both were bad, ground not prepped right and some areas installed directly over existing grass or gravel. second chance I gave them was installed poorly and already browning and I was blamed on improper care. zero interest in making it right so I'm leaving a review in hopes others don't make the same mistakes. the prices charged are super high and honestly it's just inconsistent work at best. read more

Ryan's arborists team James and David squeezed us into their busy schedule to repair damage and prune an overgrown maple tree on our property that suffered limb loss in a recent storm. They were courteous, professional, explained their process, and cleaned up completely afterward. The result is a lovely tree that's healthy, aesthetically pleasing, good air flow and graceful form. We're grateful for their rapid response, with more storms coming. Ryan's has done quite a bit of work on our property and we've always had nothing but praise for the communication, pricing, and labor, we'd recommend them to anyone for any job large or small. We have used them for lawn maintenance for several seasons now and our lawn has never looked this good. Our lawn is super thick and healthy looking. They have also done some landscaping and maintenance of our sprinkler system, and tree pruning. They are very professional and responsive in a timely manner. Cannot say enough good things about them. I don't know what happened in 2021 to Ryan Lawn but they went downhill in a hurry. I've been using Ryan Lawn for a couple of years and very happy with them until this year. Now I have weeds in my lawn after Ryan lawn serviced it. I contacted Ryan lawn about the issue asking for a manager to call me back. I spoke to them on 7/26 and we agreed to have him come out and look for himself. Not only a no show but no call or any communication of any kind. This is not the same Ryan Lawn from years past I would recommend in a second. If you're considering using their service I would recommend reading the reviews from 2021. All are the same. As a long-time client, I had been extremely happy with the service I received from Ryan Lawn up until a little over a year ago. I am not sure what happened, but billing was messed up, communication was not getting passed between departments and our lawn technician left the company (he told me things were bad and he was out). I hated to see him go, and after talking to the owner, he promised things would get better and asked me to stick it out with them. But it hasn't gotten better, only worse. Work was not being performed (supposed to clean up the beds when they trim the hedges and bushes, but they'd leave weeds and I'd be out there cleaning up the beds....but I got charged for it), and when I'd ask for them to come back and complete the service, the techs that would come back acted like I was the problem. It got so bad that this past December I chose not to pre-pay for this year (pre-pay and save a whopping $100, wow). And not once have they called to ask if I want the service, they just show up and I get billed. And this past Friday? I got double billed. So now I have to take time on Monday to get that worked out with the Billing Dept. And when I have asked them to come out to fix an irrigation issue, they gave me a service time from 8 am to 12 noon. The guy showed up right at noon. You'd think they'd be able to give better service times. I could have worked that morning and then taken the afternoon off. But does Ryan care? Of course not. The services are over-priced and the customer service is awful. At one time Ryan Lawn was fantastic. Now, they're not even close to being okay. I'm done with Ryan Lawn, and I can no longer recommend this company. Look elsewhere. read more

I contacted Ryan for an estimate for extensive landscaping for my front yard. I wanted everything removed. When the person came to bid it, he said "do you want the birch tree out? I would hate to cut down a perfectly good tree." We decided to leave the tree. Now, a month after all the work was done, they tell me the tree is dead and they want $1,100 to remove it. They had also bid a mimosa tree removal for 1400 but told me they would cut $100 off if I had them both done together. I spent $11,000 on landscaping with them and they wouldn't budge in saying they had nothing to do with the birch tree dying. In the meantime I called around for other estimates and got someone to cut down the mimosa for $500. He trimmed the dead parts off the birch tree and gave me some practical advice to hold on to the tree. Bottom line is that they gouged me with the tree removal prices so now I wonder how much I overpaid for everything. My advice is to call around for other quotes before contacting them. I saved $1,900 by not going with them. read more

Bought a home on an acre that had been tended by a master gardner for over 20 years. We had no clue as to what plants were in the yard, so we called Ryans. The came, identified everything, cut everything back for winter, and trimmed some branches. We were quoted $400 (we paid that day) and $250 more in the spring when the came back to cut the rest of the plants that needed to remain as they were until after they bloomed. Ryans came back in the spring, when I wasn't home, worked for less than an hour on the front yard only, and left a bill on the door for $390. We won't be using them again. read more

Our house has a LARGE oak tree in the front yard that hasn't been cut for decades. After purchasing the house, we realized pretty quickly that it needed to be trimmed (large dead branches falling on our cars and the threat of a huge, unsteady limb hanging over the driveway). I reached out to a number of tree trimming companies in the area but Ryan ultimately won out. Ryan Lawn was offering a 20% discount for off-season services, which included January to March (bonus!). Even without the discount, I found their prices were more reasonable than the others. I was able to get a quote within 2 days of submitting a request. Less than 3 weeks later, the work was done and our tree looks great! The crew came by last Friday and got everything done with 6 workers within an hour which is really impressive. The only reason I docked a star is because I felt like we were passed around from employee to employee while trying to schedule the appointment. We were first contacted by Luann after submitting an estimate request, then helped by Mark who provided the estimate, then emailed by a woman named Lora who told us to contact the coordinator Beth in order to find out the time of our appointment. It was frustrating, but ultimately the work was completed to our satisfaction and the price was great. read more

Clinton from the irrigation department came out on Saturday to start up my sprinkler system. I had called a month previous and was told that someone would call between 8AM & 1PM the day of service. I called a few days prior to the appointment and asked for an early time. At 7:30 the day of Clinton called and said he was on his way. He was knowledgeable, friendly and professional. I have used Ryan for years and they installed my irrigation system. I recently used them to move a sprinkler about two feet. The office only quoted me $85 to perform the service and made no mention of labor costs. When they came out to perform the service they again only referred to the $85 fee. The job took less than 30 minutes and I received a bill for $289. I complained and asked to talk with management. They have not replied. I wonder why they won't be honest up front? Looks very much like a scam operation. read more

I used to feel great about Ryan Lawn. But after they did an early morning lawn treatment, we found our cat in the back yard with hind leg broken. The back yard has a very secure privacy fence and there is no other reasonable conclusion other than that Ryan Lawn ran over poor Violet with their equipment. She had to have a steel plate put in because the femur was completely broken in a spiral fracture in two places, which is indicative of an attempt to flee from the vehicle that did the damage. When I told them about what happened they denied it. They called and harassed the vet to make a statement that it couldn't have been them. They didn't want to turn it into insurance, which seemed like a simple solution to me. This is why they have insurance, right? Well, it turns out that they're "self-insured", which means that even though they pay Gallagher-Basset to review claims, Ryan Lawn actually makes the decision on whether or not to pay out, and in this case they refused to believe (or admit) that they caused the damage. I'm reasonable and know that accidents happen, but the way they behaved during this ordeal was terrible. read more

We bought a house in Kansas City, Kansas and got the Sprinkler system installed by them in August 2019. They dug up the yard as part of the installation and sprayed grass seeds which resulted in weeds. Most of the yard now has weed and bare ground instead of grass. The yard looks ugly now. Multiple emails and calls for help went unanswered. We are getting ready to replace the yard with new sod this week. Ryan Lawn and Tree company's service is terrible. I signed up for 7 treatment Ryan Lawn advertises that ends with winterization. I just received my first treatment. It happened to be my day off and was home when I noted the person just did the front yard and left. They have given me estimate for the front and back. I called them and they said they are sending someone right away. I will update this if Ryan corrects this. I cannot believe that I have to check from this point onward to see if the work is done (likely have to install a security camera.) Make sure you get what you paid for. read more

I have used Ryan Lawn for many years. About every other year my Burning Bushes were infested with mites, even though they sprayed for them and charged me for it. I would call them out to look at them and they said that the must have sprayed a week too late. Sorry. This year it happened again, but at least half of my shrubs also were infested by some type of beetle making its way around the city. No one advised me to spray for those, and they are now in the trees too. Ryan Lawn used to be very good, but as of late, all they have are excuses that it is not their fault. I cancelled my service, and will find someone who will provide the service I am paying for. I would not recommend this company. read more

I called Ryan Lawn to help me with a Japanese Beetle problem. I was extremely impressed with the service. I explained I needed to speak with someone before they came out and did any application. Mike called me back within 24 hours and talked with me about the issue. I explained I have bees, and was hesitant about using pesticides. He spent 10 minutes educating me about the situation and he agreed having them come out and use pesticides would not be a good option for me with the bees. He then told me about other options that I could try myself and said that would be a better solution for me. Didn't charge a thing for the very informative call. They were helpful and honest and I appreciate that! read more

Have had Ryan lawn for about two years or so, and, as a result, my lawn looks WORSE then ever before. Part of the yard has turned into the desert area with lots of erosion and looks just ugly. The rest of it does not look much better. My rep would not not answer calls for days, until I reported to the main office. The manager was just as unhelpful. What a waste of time, money and effort.
