The flower girl dress.
Trina C.

Miss Jean is such a sweet woman with stellar customer service! She has a small but beautiful selection of formal clothing for children. She obviously has great taste and a very keen eye! I went in with my friend and her daughter who is one of my flower girls for my wedding this June. We spent less than 30 minutes here and found the perfect flower girl dress for the rest of my girls! It says a lot about Miss Jean that we found the perfect dress and made an instant connection with her. My friend will be coming here for her little girl's school uniform.

Ruth's carries school uniforms from elementary to high school, although you'll probably never catch a high school kid shopping here. They tend to push the uniform boundaries in every way possible. Ruth's is aware of the uniform guidelines for the surrounding schools (Martin Luther King, Hillcrest, etc), so they can recommend some options. Last I checked, they were running a mini-pack special (3 shorts, 3 pants) for $77 and up, depending on the size. For girls, a mini-pack of 3 pants and 3 skorts are $83 and up, depending on size. they also have 15-piece starter packages that have everything from tops bottoms, sweaters and socks for $135 - they add up to about 5 different outfits. The store is generally empty, so you'll get one-on-one service. Plus you'll be supporting a local Portola business :)

Lovely Jeanne.

Having trouble finding descent clothes for your child's special occasion? Can't find the shoes? It's a common problem and one should make Ruth's Shoppe their first stop. Jeanne runs the best children's dress shop in town! I made the big mistake one day going from department store to department store looking for my daughters' shoes and dresses until I realized Jeanne not only does school uniforms, but sells great tasteful children's outfits for boys and girls that will make them look dapper. I have been coming here for over 10 years for shoes, socks, Christmas outfits, and most importantly the best Communion outfits. She has a fantastic line of modern and classical style of communion outfits and mostly American made. Jeanne has the best customer service too with the old school flair paying special attention to detail and spending lots of time with her customers. A real treasure!

Miss Jean is the best, actually cares if your kids clothes fit - a rarity in this city.

I was offered usage of the materials, drafting table, and her wealth of knowledge to help me learn the skills I wanted to learn (which is finite at this time). Connie and I had a conversation about what I wanted to accomplish and she offered me advice and guidance on the best way to go about it. Within an hour, I feel confident that I can make my desired repairs and build upon that knowledge. Connie let me know that should I wish to join a class or expand my skills, that was possible. The studio is small but very well lit (I accentuate that for the visual aspect to sewing). Folks sit close to each other, but it feels communal and pleasant.

Many classes here at the sewing studio are geared towards kids (seven and up) who are able to complete 5-6 projects in a week. This is extremely ambitious for a beginning sewing class that lasts a few hours a session. My student says the class is fun and she felt well supported by the instructor and her assistant. Projects do get completed alongside good supervision and instruction. The studio is unmarked beyond a simple black awning that reads aptly, "Sew."

In my opinion prices were a bit high for used items. Saw a baby bjorn bouncer for $50 when i see them on FB being sold for less. Nike sneakers were perhaps 50% off retail price, but with some patience and waiting for a good sale, you can definitely snag some for the same price brand new. Toy selection looked sub par. A lot of the toy items i feel like i can find for free on buy nothing groups, as parents are usually desperate to get rid of them. I saw a pair of Zara trousers that were perfect but because they were new with tag and retailed at $35, they were selling them for $20. Still a bit high considering I am purchasing from a thrift store and have limited selection, so I had to pass on it. I am better off buying a new pair of pants on sale, especially for something that will be worn 1-2x If you're in a pinch and cannot wait for something to go on sale, might be a good place to pick up something last minute.

I suggest "The Gypsy Kings" as a back beat for this review…read more Your grassroots girl was in San Francisco for the civil liberties rally to celebrate with fellow activists on July 30th, 2010. Picket signs are everywhere where English and Spanish speaking friends have gathered in the Mission district to lock hands, sing songs and make plans together. This rally, myself and the wonderful store that I am about to discover have so much in common - grassroots (a hands-on philosophy) With songs ringing in my ears, tears still in my eyes, I spy a vision, my beloved miracle tonic is on the horizon. I look to the sky and wink at someone with gratitude;-) I really don't deserve such good fortune but here I stand in front of a yellow, red and blue flag centered on a blue awning. On a tiny side street with the words that so appropriately belong near Ecuador's flag: "Native Hand by Hand" But wait, it gets even better. Do you believe in fate? In destiny? I do. Because, when I walk into the store, I recognize the artisan goods immediately. *chills* This is too good to be true. Frantically, I'm trying on blouses and jewelry, and then I see the owner. Will she be frightened if I grab her and hug her? Long black hair, gold-beaded necklaces, intricate embroidered blouse -- the uniform of the indigenous of Ecuador. Her trademark features are unmistakable. She is a beautiful sight for my sore eyes to see. I am a descendant of Ecuadorian indigenous from northern Ecuador. The mother and daughter who run this store are from Otavalo, a beautiful artisan town located two hours north of Quito, Ecuador. It is home to the most famous market in South America. It is a town of magic, textiles and masterpieces. I could tell you about my travels to Otavalo but I would only make you jealous. Here is a link about Otavalo to get you excited about this shop: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otavalo What do I buy? A turquoise embroidered blouse, a beautiful white beaded necklace and an indigenous hat that is a trademark of Ecuador. We spoke of Ecuadorian festivals while the beautiful Mother (the artist) kept her hands busy with her exquisite craft of jewelry-making. Handmade (Hecho a mano). What is more beautiful? Banana Republic merchandise? Designer things? You will NEVER cherish those possessions like the ones made by hand. Like the ones made by this family. These are the things worth handing down to our future daughters with love. The prices are VERY affordable! You can't even get deals like these in Otavalo! I am envious of you who live in the neighborhood. You should be cleaning out this gem of a store of all of their merchandise (jewelry, bags, scarves, shawls and gleaming shelves of artisan masterpieces) on a regular basis. Dear Native Hand By Hand, You can't imagine how much I will treasure the things that I have purchased from you. The pictures submitted for your business from flight suit are from me! (Thanks Jedi) Best of luck to all of you who cherish handmade treasures for finding your way here. Native Hand By Hand, defining beautiful.
