I came to Ruth as an adult (28) after a lifetime of not being able to pronounce my R's. Within a few months of working with her, that issue was pretty much completely gone. I'm writing this a little while later, and my speech keeps getting smoother. Ruth is warm, patient, and genuinely cares. My twin boys started seeing Ruth when they were 2. At that point they only a handful of words and sounds. A year later, they were both speaking at age level! They both loved spending time with Ruth, thinking it was extra play time, not a "doctors" visit. Ruth is patient, kind and gets down to their level. I went to Ruth to get help with my speech rate - I'm a fast talker and sometimes people have trouble understanding me. Ruth was able to help me understand how my speech sounds to other people, by natural conversation, reading articles, and listening to my own recorded voice. She also helped me with me pitch, speech, intonation, and stumbling over specific sounds (I never knew there was a named sound called a 'schwa'.) I've been naturally soft-spoken for most of my life. As I grew into adulthood this started to creep up as a problem for me within my personal life as well as at work. Thus causing me to search for a Speech Pathologist. After looking her up through Yelp and working with her a few sessions I can confirm that Ruth is excellent at what she does! She was able to evaluate me in the first session, and pointed to all the physical mechanic problem areas in the way I talked. She immediately gave me exercises to work on that day. After 3 one on one sessions and continuous home exercises on my end. I was able to speak very confidently and with a tone that can comfortably fill a room. Our preschool daughter has been seeing Ruth since August. My daughter has a slight lisp and had many sound replacements that were not improving with natural development. Ruth was very professional during our first phone interview and made my daughter comfortable upon our initial meeting and assessment with her. In just 5 months, my daughter has corrected multiple speech sounds and relatives and teachers have observed her speech improvement. Ruth knows how to incorporate play and indirect teaching if the child has a stubborn day. When my daughter T. was three and half years old and the pre-school said she is behind in her communication skills and her speech is unintelligible, I was in shock and worried. I thought Tamar was the smartest toddler in all the world. The school recommended Ruth and after her evaluation of T. she told us that Tamar is normal and just needs coaching on her speech and language development. We scheduled a session with Ruth; the arrangement was like we are going to Ruth to play so it would not be like an experience of going to the doctor for T. For most part T. played along and really liked to going to play with Ruth. After six months T's speech is much fluent, she is more confident and really happy that she can express herself and can be understood. Now she can tell us what she did at preschool and is beginning to be able to retell a story she has heard. I appreciate that Ruth worked with my insurance company trying to get reimbursed. My speech seems normal, despite the fact that I appear to have an "accent". Most of the time, new acquaintances cannot place my nationality since they cannot decipher my accent. I was fitted with hearing aids 3 years ago for congenital hearing loss in the upper third of the higher decibels. Because I never heard the parts of speech, I did not have the correct pronunciation in my own speech. With the hearing aids, I can finally distinguish the different sounds in words, especially the sounds in the letters "t", "s", "th", and "r". Hearing these sounds recently made me realize that I had a speech impediment. Consultation with Ruth was easy and fun. Therapy was quite short, and practice was incorporated in every day speech. Within 2 short months, my speech impediment of 40 years was improved by 80%. Now, my speech is much clearer and even more concise, organized, and within the correct pitch. His issues were minor--a lingering lisp--but remained noticeable enough to pursue help. Our now 5 year old has been working with Ruth since he was diagnosed with speech delay, for the past 2 years. When our little one started, he was barley saying single words and what he did say was hard to understand. Our little one quickly warmed up to 'teacher Ruth' and now looks forward to seeing her. Now he speaks in full sentences and retelling stories. Ruth is now incorporating social skills into her work with our little one. Ruth has coached us on how to expand and encourage his language development and always spends time after the session going over what was covered and giving us suggestions on to do with the little one at home. Now Ruth is encouraging our little one to begin to tell us what the little one did during the session. This would have been unimaginable when we started 2 years ago.
