My sandwich was mediocre at best, the bread was so hard and just not enjoyable for the price

We stopped in for lunch assuming this was just another northwoods restaurant. The full parking lot should have been our first clue to the great meal we were about to eat! The menu was surprisingly modern (hummus!) and they were playing Bon Iver - two positives in my book. The meatloaf was awesome - THE GRAVY!!! Smoked salmon sandwich was also great, but know that you only get half of a sandwich with this one (the turkey sandwich was a full sandwich). Such a nice surprise. Went there for lunch on a Saturday. We were at Duluth at the time (11:45am), and called when we set off to inquire about the seating situation. We were told the indoor dining is 10-15 min wait time, and patio seating is 5 min. Took us 45 min to get there, and the seating time had stretched to 30min to an hour. It seems that if you could get to the restaurant before noon, the wait is a lot more manageable. We were seated on the patio, as we requested for the earliest seating available, not knowing the menus are different, and indoor menu selections are not available for patio seating. We had our hearts set on Walleye Picatta and Wild Rice Meatloaf, none of which was available on the patio menu. We went back to reception, and a kind gentleman staff member managed to find us a table without putting us back onto the waitlist. Both dishes were DELICIOUS! Highly recommended! The honey wheat bread was baked in-house, and we loved it! Last but not least, be sure to try the pies, or take one to go. We purchased a North Shore Berry Crumb, recommended by a friend who lives in the area, and it's heavenly! read more

This place is homey and welcoming, so Cafe in the name is appropriate, but the quality of the food and the depth of the menu are 5 star quality. As good as anyplace on the North Shore. And yes, the pies!!! read more

We learned about the Rustic Inn around a campfire one night and headed there for breakfast the next morning. The waitress was sassy, the hash browns crispy, the eggs cooked perfectly and the coffee...well it was hot anyway. My impression was amped up exponentially when we returned for pie later that day. My raspberry cream slice had a meringue crust, fresh berries folded into a light cream cheese filling, and a crown of whipped cream. Not too sweet, not too tart, light but rich. The lemon angel pie I sampled was similarly constructed. The mixed berry with a crumb topping tasted like a really good cobbler. There is another, much better known, pie place nearby. Try the Rustic Inn instead. You won't be sorry. read more

With slim pickings along the North Shore, I had low expectations. Rustic Inn fit the bill nicely. We started with fried green tomatoes (which I order pretty much anytime they are on a menu). I thought they were too bready and hubby thought they were the best he ever had. The homemade remoulade has just the right amount of bite / zing. My wild rice meatloaf was outstanding. The mashed potatoes were just the right amount of chunk and smooth. Hubby was less enamored with his black bean and quinoa burger. It was a bit dry but tasty with a sweet marmalade topping changing things up. The local castle danger 1707 beer was an excellent recommendation; easy to see why it was the staff favorite. We ordered pie to-go and will update once we taste. *** North Shore berry cobbler earned its top seller and local favorite status. Loads of berries and a perfect amount of rhubarb. Horrible wait time. We waited around an hour outside in the cold because they had no seats inside. Finally when we were seated, nobody came to ask us anything. We couldn't even order our drinks. The waitress we saw was busy having a conversation and wasn't actually working. There were multiple other people waiting and there were around 5-6 empty tables but nobody was seated. I wanted to love it, I really did. It's close to home and I was hoping it'd be another option for a dinner out. We were a little underwhelmed. It was a bit busy for a winter Wednesday night and the one waitress on staff was struggling a bit. Forgotten drinks was the common theme. I ordered the meatloaf, my husband had the ribs. For me the meatloaf tasted good the first half of it, the gravy had a very familiar taste to it. But after eating the meatloaf, gravy and mashed potatoes for a few minutes things became really salty. To the point of getting a stomachache and not finishing my meal. My husband didn't care of the ribs, small portion and not really much flavor. He can get much better ones in our town. No dinner salads with expensive meals rubs us wrong as well. Don't look around much while you're there, you'll see a lot of crumbs in the window sills, nasty liquid runs on the windows, dust bunnies, and dirty salt and pepper shakers. We had dinner on a Monday night. Staff was super friendly. I had a Cranberry Wild Rice Rachel. Homemade bread and homemade sauerkraut. Best sandwich I've had in AGES. My husband had the Cubano on this pillowy soft ciabatta bread. Also soooo good. Oh! And giant onion rings!! Ended the meal with a huge slice of peanut butter pie. Whoa. Delicious. This quaint little restaurant had the most incredible food. I had the veggie sandwich and my partner had the wild rice meatloaf. They were absolutely beautiful; it was hard to take the first bite when we could have just looked at them! We both had flavor explosions in our mouth with every bite! I was so happy when I saw their vegetarian options for myself! I wish I could make a veggie sandwich this incredible; down to the toasted bun! If eating here 3 times in two days doesn't say how I feel about the rustic inn I'm not sure what will! From the friendly and gracious service to the warm interior and of course the delicious meals from breakfast to dinner. Sherry our kind and quick waitress steered me to the American home fries and short stacks with the local maple syrup (definitely worth the extra $1.5) and I came back again for it this morning. My husband and I had a very small, intimate wedding at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. It was just us, our officiant friend and his wife, our photographer friend, her husband and their young son. Rustic Inn Cafe is the closest restaurant to the park and one of the couples we were with had eaten there before and only had positive things to say! We got there on the heels of another party of seven and we're seated within five minutes. We had a table at the window, overlooking the lake, it was very nice. The server was very attentive in getting our drink, food and dessert orders. The wine list was pretty generic, you ordered a type and they brought you what they had. The beer options were a bit more varied, with a selection of tap and bottled, local, domestic and imported. One side of the table -- myself, my husband and one of our friends -- ordered two different kinds of fish (local halibut and Canadian walleye) prepared three different ways (Szechuan style, ritzy and piccata). The other side of the table ordered two different kinds of roast beef (one sandwich and two dinners). We all ordered the delicious horseradish and scallion mashed potatoes as our side... It was all so good!! Then there was dessert... A selection of 15-20 pies varying from fruits to creams, with options for pastry or crumb toppings. My husband and I shared a slice of summer berry pie with a pastry top, it was delicious!! Excellent walleye cakes. Breakfast is typically good. Bar options are relatively poor; for example, they serve only Castle Danger beer and it's always warm! Bar area has better atmosphere than main restaurant, which is packed and loud like a Perkins. Service is relatively poor. Today there were 3 tables full and 2 servers (i.e., they could use the business). The waitress was not willing to accommodate our request to sit in bar. She said "you can sit in the restaurant if you so choose " as she walked away from me! And so we left and spent our money elsewhere. This experience alone ruined the whole place for me. We were in Two Harbors for the day and went to the Rustic Inn based upon the Yelp ratings and we were so pleased. We both got hamburgers and fries and it was all excellent! Got pie and carrot cake to go, but haven't tried them yet. Neat and clean restaurant with great service right along HWY 61. We"ll be back again next trip! read more

LOVED everything from the quirky water pitcher and friendly staff to the amazing food and wood pellet stoves!
