    Fresh Apple cider donuts
    Sophia A.

My family comes to Russo's all year for fresh fruit, vegetables, and of course, the pastries. You walk into Russo's and the smell of the bakery greets you. You can peruse the aisles and find fresh New Jersey cranberries, blueberries etc. (season permitting). Their apple cider donuts are also locally famous. I live in NYC now, and I have yet to try an apple cider donut as good as Russo's. Also very good are their crumb cakes. While not my favorite dessert, their crumb cake would convert anyone. Now that it's Thanksgiving , we order our pies ahead of time to pick-up. When we pick them up, they are still warm! The only thing I would recommend with pre-ordering is double-checking your pie orders. Last year, we were mistakingly given an Apple pie instead of a pecan pie. I went back a few days later and they happily gave us the pecan pie, without any questions. Everything you would hope to see in a local, family business.

It's a smaller farm than nearby Johnson's Corner farm, and they don't grow any food to my knowledge, so it's much less crowded and chaotic, plus cheaper. You can't pick your own berries or apples or anything, but the hayride out to the "pumpkin patch" is fun to do in the fall, and there is enough to do besides pumpkin picking to stretch it into a full afternoon of inexpensive family friendly fun. They have a playground, goats and alpacas, a small maze, plus plenty of food and live music on the weekends. My girlfriend, 11-year-old son and I recently tried their winter wonderland illuminated walking trail which they just started up in 2022. For the three of us, after taxes and fees, it was $57.90. It was a very pleasant night strolling the 1/4 mile trail filled with lights and christmas music, plus the several campfires set up at the end of the trail.

Everything was clean, organized, and family-friendly (including the bathrooms, which as parents we definitely appreciate!). The owners and staff were incredibly friendly, helpful, and genuinely seemed to love what they do. Our kids had an absolute blast picking fresh strawberries, meeting the animals, and riding on the tractor, which ended up being one of the highlights of the day! The market was another pleasant surprise, full of fun snacks, treats, and unique items to browse. This place offers so much more than just fruit picking. It really feels like a full family experience. We'll definitely be back and would highly recommend it to any family looking for a fun, well-run day outdoors!

Tip: Buy your entry tickets online -- it's cheaper than getting them at the gate! This place runs on a "park-and-pick" setup, meaning you'll drive to different spots around the farm for each activity. Apple picking is by bag size, not by the pound -- the smallest bag was $7.50 and fit about 10-12 apples. It was hot the day we went, so we stuck to apple picking and cooled off at the marketplace afterward (skipped the maze and sunflowers). The cider and donuts were just okay compared to other farms I've been to, but the apple cider slush? Totally addictive (even if it's $9 -- ouch). Once the sun eased up later in the afternoon, we stopped by to see the goats and chickens and hopped on the hay ride -- the perfect cozy ending to the day.

The farm has a small area where there are a few animals, a produce store, a bakery, picnic tables, and of course the picking fields. There is plenty of parking here, and a tractor runs on an interval to take people out to the picking fields and back again. I think the tracker rides are $2.50 a person. The farm provides you with bags/ buckets for your picking, and once you are done you bring it back to the produce store where they weigh your pickings and charge you per the pound. The produce store isn't the cleanest- but then again it is on a farm. The produce is reasonably priced, and I personally have never had an issue with the customer service. Conte's adjusts to the season, which is great. So in the fall they have a hay maze and pre picked pumpkin patches. My favorite seasonal thing here is the ice cream. According to the harvest, the soft serve ice cream flavors change. I've tried the peach, blueberry, and apple- all delicious. I now take trips here solely for the ice cream.

I visited while on a bike ride in the area -- going slow enough I guess to spot the modest signage on the highway. At 50mph I would have missed it. In about a month the first greens of the season (escarole and romaine) will be on sale -- followed by all the usual south Jersey suspects -- like garlic and tomatoes and eggplant and potatoes. The farm also carries local apples and other fruit in season -- grown elsewhere. Don't miss this real deal. The farmer will show you around and happily explain how he runs his operation -- from fertilizer -- to seed -- to harvest. I cannot get enough of real Americana.
