We had come here on a Saturday afternoon at around 12:00 pm for lunch. Upon coming in, we had to wait at the front for about 15 minutes for a table. When the buzzer indicated that our table was ready, we were escorted to a table near the back of the restaurant. The restaurant itself was quite busy, as it was the Mother's Day weekend, which made it loud and crowded at times. I had settled on the Rueben sandwich, which I was pleasantly surprised with. The sandwich was massive, with a lot of meat inside, and warmed-up to perfection. The sweet potato fries on the side were a nice addition with the sandwich. The service was good however, I found that it was a bit rushed at times, which was most likely because it was busy. The restaurant was very busy when we came here on Sunday around noon for brunch. They had a patio outdoors but we opted to dine indoors as it was a bit cold. They said the wait time was around 10-15 minutes but we ended up waiting around 30 minutes. We ordered the farmers sausage & two eggs, Russell Williams special, smoked salmon Benedict, and the grilled cheese and bacon Benedict. We liked the grilled cheese and bacon Benedict the best. We waited for about half an hour (they told us 15min) to get seated inside the restaurant. Once we got seated, we waited about another 15-20min to have the waitress say hello to us. I ordered a coffee and once I got my cup, there was a lipstick stain on it! The waitress didn't really apologize, just took it and got me another cup. Menu has a lot of variety. We ended up ordering the Smoked Salmon Benedict and the Grilled Cheese & Bacon Benedict. The Smoked Salmon Benedict was pretty average, but we really enjoyed the Grilled Cheese & Bacon Benedict! It was definitely something different and surprisingly really good! Prices were average diner pricing...I would probably do take out next time. read more

We've passed the big signs for this diner on the road many times after dropping by the RBG Arboretum for birdwatching. On July 11th we made a day of it at the RBG because we intended to watch a live concert there that evening (They're having live country or jazz performances through the summer at RBG this year), so we decided to try out Russell Williams for lunch. We can now easily see why this family run diner has stayed in business in Burlington since 1930. Yelpers, you could come here just for the thick homemade gravy I had on my fries, it was THAT GOOD! Worthy every penny of the 99 cents extra to cover the big crispy fries. The signature Russell Williams burgers were so huge I couldn't finish mine, even though I have a hearty appetite. There were big white fresh onion rings, almost bigger than the huge burger. My youngest tried out their Grilled Cheese Burger. It looked so delicious that I'm definitely ordering that next time I'm here! Hubby decided to have rice pudding for desssert and it was brought to the table steaming hot and sprinkled with cinnamon. I chose a lemon meringue pie and the waitress apologized that the slice was cut unevenly and too big LOL! What a shame I was handed too much deliciousness! I promptly asked my bottomless pit youngest who still has a teen's voracious appetite to share the too big lemon meringue pie slice with me. A gluttonous happy time was had by all 4 of us! As someone who goes to diner-style restaurants semi-often, I can really appreciate this place. When I first looked at the menu I thought the prices were a little more steep than other diners, but when the food came out it was an even better deal than the other diners I've been to. I got the Russell Williams special which consisted of 2 (massive) pancakes, 2 sausage links, bacon, home fries and a slice of ham. All for about $15. I was able to get 2 full meals out of the serving, one at the restaurant and then one later in the day from my leftovers. Highly recommend coming here if you are into diners. read more

Y'know how sometimes you go to a new-to-you "family style restaurant" for breakfast and you figure everything is pretty tasty so you decide to order something you consider your "usual" for comparison sake? I did that here by ordering a western omelette, without cheese. The no cheese was the mistake, but I was being cautious with a dietary issue I've discovered (cheese + eggs + coffee = gurgles). The omelette was fine, just no oomph in flavour town. The hash browns were the lumpy mushy kind that aren't my favourite, but they also tasted fine. The star of the meal was actually my friend's bacon grilled cheese benedict. Yep, poached eggs, hollandaise sauce on top of a bacon grilled cheese. AMAZING! The eggs and hollandaise sauce were perfect and the grilled cheese was a great flavour base for it all. I was happy when she offered me a second bite. I definitely recommend that! Went to Russell Williams last week, along with my family. 2 of us got the big breakfast special, the other got a club sandwich. I was not a huge fan of the breakfast. The sausages were too salty, pancakes were not fluffy and eggs were greasy. Homefries were good though! My brother had the same breakfast and he loved it. So, there's no accounting for taste I guess. Nestled in a relatively quiet neighbourhood, Russell Williams has been serving diner style grub to a regularly packed house for quite sometime. I would be amazed to find out that there were more than seven people under the age of fifty when I went which is kind of cool in my books. That says customer loyalty to me. The Hamilton Spec had a piece that mentioned Russell as the kind of place that people went to as kids and now take their kids. That comment came roaring home as soon as I walked in the door. It just looked like I stepped into my grandparent's old basement. Everything is brown. The tables, chairs, walls and carpet have that old fifties faux "wood" look and I loved it. Don't expect anything fancy here but do come prepared to eat. Portions are appropriate for hungry folk and I had a little trouble finishing off my home fries. I went with the two eggs, sausage and fries breakfast and was not disappointed. Two coffees a juice and breakfast ran me somewhere in the vicinity of eight bucks. If you're in the area and are looking for simple eats then this is a good place to check out. read more

I car pool to work with 3 other guys I work with. We all go for breakfast every Friday morning before we come to work. I must say this place is consistent in the food. My companions always order the same thing and sit and the same table and have to sit in the same chair...(techies). I switch up my order every time. I typically get one of the following for breakfast. Poached Eggs with bacon and brown toast with tomato Eggs over easy with bacon and brown toast with tomato Western Sandwich on brown Egg and bacon sandwich on brown The bacon is the best here they give you lots and it's cooked perfectly to my liking. I wouldn't recommend getting the fruit. On the weekend the place is rammed. So be prepared to wait. We have the same waitress every time we go and we love her. read more

It's a delicious step back in time. The diner décor is wonderfully dated. (Not in a kitschy way like the '50s diner chains, but in a genuine "we were there in the '70s" way). The walls, the floors, the chairs and even the dishes. It's all like you might remember, just the way it was several decades ago. The food is great. Even though the restaurant is quite busy, the service is good -- the servers are run off their feet, but cheerful and efficient -- and the food all tastes homemade. I had my usual: eggs, home fries, toast, and coffee. Then I had the blueberry pie for dessert. It was all delicious. (My only complaint would be the washrooms. To call this place 'classic' is a massive understatement since they've been there for several decades. The menu is about as stereotypically 'Canadian' as you can get with traditional breakfast items, burgers, turkey sandwiches, meatloaf, etc... But they remain popular amongst every age group for good reason. One is the incredible value and the menu prices look out of place by a decade or two. The other and most important reason is the quality of their food. For example: for their hash browns, you can taste that they're cooked in real butter (rather than just oil or margarine). The pancakes are amongst the best I've had. The meat is always good quality, such as the hamburgers being homemade from fresh, high-quality ground beef. They do their own pea meal bacon as well. You can even taste the quality in basic things like their eggs, or that their cheese is actual cheese and not processed. There's no extravagant cooking techniques or things that will absolutely floor you here, but there is an abundance of traditional comfort food, done really well (and for really cheap). read more

This place has been around for a while and I think it is more because of the older regulara than foodies. The breakfast is simple, not all that impressive, greasy spoon affair. The pace of the place is slow and that can be endearing in some ways but not if you are looking to catch a quick Bacon, eggs and home fries. It took a pretty ridiculous amount of time for the food to arrive. The server didn't seem to care all that much and sorta slammed the meal down in front of us. I'm sure maybe we caught them on a bad day or something. Anyway, the place smelled like.. a dirty restaurant. Floors were pretty gross and the smell was rather earthy, humid and cloying to the nose. While we didn't get sick I really wanted to ask what the kitchen looked like to help ease my mind but we just kept our heads down and ate. Anyway, the place is a typical cheap greasy spoon. Went on a Saturday around noon. Had difficulty finding a parking spot as the restaurant was packed. Waited for 5 minutes for a table which was not bad at all. I ordered the eggs Benni and my 4 year old daughter got a pancake. Kind of off putting there was no kids menu. Ordered a coffee, apple juice and two waters. Took a bit for our drinks to get there and never did get the waters even when asking a 2nd time. Eggs Benni arrived first prompting me to hold off while I entertained a starving 4 year old for 5 minutes. Pancake finally arrived and was way too big the batter didn't settle so it was ripping apart when I sliced into it. Refill on the coffee was adequate. Was charged for a 2nd Apple juice for my child. Overall, pretty underwhelming place. Service was sub par. Not sure if it was due to the hustle of the busy weekend crowd. Our waitress was a middle aged woman who was non stop god bless her. Classic place. Classic breakfast. Food is clean and tasty. Had the peameal and eggs and it was all cooked to perfection. Back bacon was juicy and thick and not too salty the way it should be. Service is prompt and coffee refills were abundant. Food arrived quickly. Left full and satisfied but with no tired post greasy meal feeling. Felt energized. We've been to this place a few times but always on the weekend. We decided to try and a weekday and for lunch instead of our typical breakfast. We both ordered two of the lunch specials - mine was the corned beef sandwich with a salad. I was disappointed with both the sandwich and salad. Portion wise the sandwich was very small and the salad was very blah- iceberg lettuce and 2 tomatoes, no other veggies. My husband ordered the fish and chips special. His first bite into the coleslaw he says "I think it's spoiled" . You could see from the colour it was off. I tried it as well and couldn't get it out of my mouth quick enough. They of course were nice enough to replace it with another side dish. How could the kitchen send this out spoiled? Unfortunately we will not be going back. read more
