My husband and I had an absolutely bizarre experience in this store today. I mean, off the hook strange. Buckle up, this is going to take a minute.
We were contacted by this store and told we were eligible for a new phone and could likely reduce our bill. We thought we were probably paying way too much given our usage. Sounds great, so we made an appointment.
After an hour we were told that we could reduce our bill from $260 to $170. Great. But we had to pay off one of our phones, and prorate our previous plan, so the first bill would be $263. Okay. Not entirely clear about this, so we wanted to see the numbers. Also, more importantly would our subsequent bills be $170? The sales person went to the mysterious back room a couple of times to try to answer that question. But she came back and said she couldn't tell us what our future bills would be.
Now wait, you want us to sign a three year contract but you are unable to tell us if our cost would be $170 or $260 in perpetuity? When we pressed her on this, her disposition changed dramatically. She wouldn't make eye contact with us and said, "I've explained it to you three times now." And we are like, "No, you actually haven't explained anything." In fact, you can't even tell us what our monthly bill would be.
After an hour of being patient and completely cordial customers the passive aggressive no eye contact thing was a little much for me, so I calmly said to my husband lets go.
That's when things spiraled quickly. As we were leaving, saying the sales person couldn't tell us how much our bill would be, the manager intervened and started loudly and repeatedly saying, "Have a nice day!" "Have a nice day!" Suddenly, some guy from the mysterious back room came out also joining the chorus. "Have a nice day!" Obviously, this is part of some deescalation training. But it was completely unnecessary, we were leaving and we were frustrated but totally okay with it. It was accentually the employees that turned it into a scene. Nice deescalation.
My husband and I understand consumer electronics and we certainly understand math. And nothing added up. If the clerk didn't know, or couldn't figure it out, that's fine. No worries. It's cool. But the condescending tone in the face of such ignorance didn't make sense. I really hate to use this expression, but it felt like gaslighting.
Something is very off about the vibe at this place. They're tripping. But times are weird and tough for lots of people these days. I get it. After the shock of it all wore off I actually feel sorry for them. They seemed triggered.. by... something.
By the way, footnote to this story. We called Verizon directly when we got home. We reduced our bill by $100 a month and we both got new phones. It took only 20 minutes.
I guess It doesn't have to be that hard. read more
