On a late Wednesday morning, a group of friends and I got breakfast at Russ & Daughters. Having been to the location on Houston St., we already knew what to expect. We entered, took our ticket numbers (like the ones you see at the grocery stores), and waited for our turn. Luckily, not too many others also waited to order, so my number got called in a few minutes. I ordered the Super Heebster bagel sandwich with whitefish & baked salmon salad, horseradish-dill cream cheese, & wasabi flying fish roe ($19) and a cold brew coffee ($5) at the counter. Staff asked me to wait a few minutes. After preparing everything, they called me to the cash register, where I paid and received everything. I managed to snag the 5 person table w/combination booth and chair seating that freed up as I walked away from the cash register. Otherwise, all tables looked occupied; however, turnover seemed quick for most getting quick meals. The bagel sandwich proved excellent. The whitefish & baked salmon salad tasted creamier and richer than whitefish alone without becoming too oily or rich. I added onions, tomato, and caper (+$0.50 ea, +$1.50 total); these cut the richness substantially and balanced the palate. The wasabi roe provided some sharper texture and flavor contrasts. As for the bagel itself, I chose the everything bagel. The outer texture and inner fluffiness seemed on par with other highly rated establishments, such as Liberty Bagels. Crucially, it did not seem too dense. The cold brew coffee tasted on par with those at decent 3rd wave coffee shops - not too over extracted, dusty, over diluted, or acidic (good thing the previous decade's trend of light roast cold brew coffee died out).
While there are many Russ & Daughters locations, we stopped by this one near Hudson Yards. Like its surrounding corporate offices, the interior felt very corporate chic and lack authenticity. The place is packed during breakfast hour. We grabbed a ticket then waited about 15 minutes until our number was called to order. This store focuses mostly on savory options. You can order their spreads, smoked fishes, and even caviar. I got an everything bagel with plain cream cheese. While the cream cheese tasted pretty solid, the bagel was a letdown. It tasted old and dry, on par with a bagel from Einstein Bros. If you want a nice lox, I would suggest getting spread and fish here but bagel elsewhere.
We swung by here for breakfast while staying at a local hotel. There is a huge selection of bagels, schmears and caviar along with deli staples like latke, soups and sandwiches. The workers were patient with us out-of-towners asking lots of questions and seeking recommendations. The latke were really good as were the bagels. The caviar schmear is an easy intro to caviar for caviar-newbies.
This was a disappointing experience. Years ago I went to the original Russ and Daughters, which was completely mad. The lines were insane and the wait was an hour for a bagel. But it was totally worth it. Those were the days. Now there are locations everywhere. I got a classic gaspe nova (sesame) bagel with (scallion) schmear. The bagel was the saddest bagel I have ever eaten. I am from NYC, I know my bagels. This bagel was hard. They used to put a quarter pound of salmon in the bagels. I could barely see the salmon in this bagel. I got some alskan roe to be fancy, but definitely not worth the upcharge. Two bagels and minus $50 later - I decided I will likely not return.
This place is cute. Feels like you jumped into the 1950s for a second. A little quiet without music. They got a lot to choose from. I got classic cream cheese with lox. The cashier suggested I get the scallion cream cheese, I also added capers, onions and tomato with it. I see they also sell caviar and champagne, that's cool. My bagel was wrapped so nicely. It was absolutely delicious and the bagel itself was very fresh. They had plenty of seating on a Wednesday morning, the seats were very comfortable. Definitely a yummy spot!
Fairly popular bagel spot featuring a few fish varieties and with a large and corporate menu. You take a ticket and wait your turn to order. The bagel is decent and although it was good, I felt the similar taste can be had outside of NYC and this was more about the ambiance.
Lucky coincidence that this location was a 14 min walk from our stay so went right over a few minutes before opening. A line started forming pretty quickly so I could already tell the bagels would be worthwhile. I ordered a sesame bagel with scallion cream cheese and tomato. Absolutely delicious! The location is super cute and looks like a modernized old fashioned deli. Service was excellent and I'm so sad I don't live nearby so I can have fresh NY bagels on a regular basis.
Came here for a bagel! As a west coast tourist, this place was perfect. Deli style ordering where you grab a number. Place your order. They call you up to the counter when the food is ready and then you pay. Everyone was super friendly and kind. The bagels were fantastic. We had the everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. The ratio of schmear to bagel was perfect. Also the top and bottom of the bagel had the everything seasoning on it! My husband had the cinnamon raisin bagel with regular cream cheese. He really enjoyed it. Our 5 year old had the babka French toast and really liked it. We also got the latke which was AMAZING! The inside is very cute with tables and a super nice bathroom. Highly recommend if looking for a traditional NY bagel!

I've been dying to try Russ & Daughters for some time and today was the day. We were in town on holiday for the week and we walked from our place in Chelsea. After a brief wait we ordered: Matzo ball soup and a sesame bagel for my wife and an onion bagel with scallion cream cheese, lox, tomato, capers and onion for me. We got a table and got to it. Firstly, the Matzo ball soup was SCREAMING hot just like it should be. Some places are afraid to serve their soups at a decent temperature but not R&D. Yes! Sesame bagel was good. My bagel with everything was kinda perfect. Chewy, crunchy, creamy, salty and briny with capers. The cold brew was also quite good and my wife's coffee was fine. Service was friendly and prompt. Ambiance was upscale diner meets fish market. We will be back to try a few more things. Thanks! 8/10
When you walk in, it's a bit intimidating. There's a long line. Lots of variety to choose from. Limited seating. But... One of the best salmon lox bagels I've had! They give you lots of salmon lox, cream cheese, tomatoes, onions, and capers. The tomatoes, onions, and capers are add ons. They are pretty quick. I never finish a whole bagel, but this was something my friends and I demolished. Highly recommend!
Russ & Daughters will always be a favorite of mine. It's a place worth venturing around with all the different variety that they have to offer. If you are not someone who's really into lox, you can skip, but if you are into lox...worth going and trying all that they have to offer. Yes it's 1000% on the pricier end, and no it's not a grab and go kind of bagel...but oh is it a nice treat here and there. I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to the locations of Russ & Daughters...I definitely prefer the original location but this and the other cafe by the original are nice simply for the fact that the insides are built out so well and are incredibly cozy and "New York." With this being a bagel you'd like to sit down and enjoy, this location and the other cafe location are great for exactly that. *side-note, this isn't a place to be intimidated by. The deli like setting can scare many but it is incredibly relaxed and friendly.
Incredible! This place was highly recommended to me and I had to stop by when I was in New York. You enter and grab a number and it goes pretty quickly. The bagel was delicious and the horseradish dill cream cheese really added to the flavor. I wish I was more hungry so I could try more items. Definitely would love to come back and get soup or a black-and-white cookie.
Excellent fishy bagel spot with the best half-sour pickles! They have a number ticket system which helps streamline service. They have a number of options and a DIY option, but I opted for their classic smoked salmon bagel and the whitefish bagel per recommendation of the staff. Both were great, fishy but not too fishy. The toppings they offer also helped to add some freshness and acidity. The half-sour pickle is also a must! Quite pricey for bagels but you can tell they use quality ingredients. There's limited seating but the turnover is quick. Very clean inside and fun to look around while waiting for your number! read more
We had heard Russ & Daughters Cafe has some of the best bagels in New York, so I was really excited to finally try their lox bagel! We came in on a Monday morning and were surprised there was no line. Service was good, and everything came out pretty quickly. Classic Bagel & Lox Sandwich (4/5): Good, but honestly not quite as good as I was expecting given the reputation. The salmon was tasty, but the everything bagel was a little too chewy for my preference. Still a solid lox bagel, just not as amazing as I had built it up to be. Fancy Delancey (5/5): This was the surprise favorite! It had smoked tuna, horseradish dill cream cheese, and wasabi flying fish roe. Such a unique combination, but everything worked really well together. Really flavorful and surprisingly delicious. Overall, I enjoyed the experience, but the Fancy Delancey was definitely the standout for me! read more
Had to make a stop at Russ & Daughters while in NYC, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Such a classic New York experience--the retro counter, neon sign, and cases full of smoked fish, bagels, and all the good stuff. I grabbed an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and it was SO good. Fresh, chewy, generously loaded with cream cheese, and exactly the kind of NYC bagel moment I was hoping for. Quick service even with people coming and going, and I loved being able to grab it and take it with me for breakfast. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the city and want an iconic New York bagel experience! read more

A quintessential joint for lax and bagel ~ order at the counter. Location was bigger than I expected with some retail space and even indoor seating. Classic Bagel & Lox Sandwich on a Pretzel Bagel $17 - 9/10 - ratio of cream cheese to bagel and lox is perfect; amazing - heavy cream cheese and heavy salmon, bagel smaller (just the way I prefer my carb ratio) - choose your own cream cheese; worked recommended scallion cream cheese, so delicious! - moist, totally would order & eat again! Chocolate Babka $4 - 4/10 - I did purchase a slice (& not a loaf), so it very likely contributed to it tasting dry. But it was also not not chocolatey. Curious how this compares to Breads Bakery. Feel free to skip. Black & White Cookie $3.50 - 3/10 - also dry, meh and not memorable at all. Will note that the chocolate had a snap to it (intentional?). read more
On our way to the Hudson Yards area, we stopped in Russ & Daughters for a bagel. We ordered at the counter and found a quiet, cozy spot by the window to sit. Service was friendly and fast! In just a few minutes, our order was ready. The bagel was my favorite in NYC and it had the perfect amount "smear"! Highly recommend Russ & Daughters if you're in the city. Wow! This place is amazing! I've seen this place on social media and I had to stop by. I wasn't sure what to order so the man helping me gave me a small slice of pastrami salmon and whitefish to sample. I liked them both so he made me a bagel with a little bit of each. It was probably the best bagel I've ever had. read more
First time in NYC and wanted to try all the "you have to try ... in NY" so this bagel spot happened to be right outside of our hotel. We walked over and it was PACKED! You have to pull a number (similar to a deli) and wait to be called. They moved very fast and even though they were busy we didn't feel rushed and they were SUPER nice. The bagels were soooooo good. My son got an everything bagel with plain cream cheese (toasted) he is a bagel SNOB and was soooo impressed. Said it was the best bagel ever he also got a cinnamon roll from there (I don't remember their name for it). He was even more impressed with the cinnamon roll lol!!! I got an egg everything bagel with scallion cream cheese (not toasted). It was THEEE single best bagel I have ever had in my life. We returned the next morning. I love history and food, so going to a business that's been running for 111 years is right up my wheelhouse! We wanted to try NY Bagels and the bagels here tasted amazing! I am not a big cream cheese fan so if I could change one thing with my order, it would be only having half the cream cheese that was on it. The smoked salmon was incredible though! The staff was amazing though and super helpful with helping us decide what we would like best. Make sure if you see a seat though to grab it asap as they are constantly packed - with good reason! read more
Although Russ & Daughters was my least favorite bagel from my NYC trip, it was still good, and I'm glad I tried it. The menu items sounded and looked interesting, and I appreciated the variety of schmears, salads, and specialties. However, I didn't think the flavors and textures quite delivered or matched my intrigue. My first mistake was not asking for the bagel to be toasted, so it tasted a bit one dimensional and dense throughout. The caviar cream cheese looked spectacular with its gray color but wasn't as flavorful as I hoped. I also found the whitefish to be a bit mushy, as I personally prefer fish salads to be chunkier. With so many other bagel options in NYC, I probably wouldn't come back. read more

Really great variety of options of cream cheeses, fish, and other bagel toppings! Service was very nice and quick. Just a heads up - when you walk in you have to take a ticket, then when they call your ticket number you can give them your order. Then, once the order is finished you pay. Very clean inside with some seating and other things you can buy. read more
Nice, clean, well lighted space. It's part restaurant. Part take out store. They have a few different types of smoked salmon (lox) and a variety of bagels, and selection of cream cheese too. They will toast the bagel if you want. They have a couple of soups, some latkes, one or two other things, but seriously, you are here for the lox. It's the best in NYC, and probably anywhere else too. If you live here in NYC, you come to Russ and Daughters. read more
Large, bright, clean environment. Once you enter, grab a ticket. When your number is called, walk up to the counter and place your order. I noticed most customers knew what they were getting and they ordered quickly (locals?). The folks working behind the counter are friendly and fast. I ordered two pumpernickel bagels, one with olive spread, the other with (don't judge) horseradish spread. The bagel were excellent, the spreads good. Would definitely return. read more
The amazing sable and cream cheese on bagel has set the bar for my favorite bagel treat. At a bagel shop I almost always have an everything bagel with nova, cream cheese, onion, tomato and capers. Switching that up to smoked sable here at Russ & Daughters takes it to a whole new level. The sable is light and buttery. They also have pumpernickel bagels ... perfection (my wife's favorite). The bagels are cheery and lite at the same time... honestly some of the best I've had. I'm afraid from now on when ordering a nova bagel sandwich anywhere else I'll only be dreaming of the sable bagel treat from here. This newer shop is clean and spacious. There's a cool entryway with a view to where the bagel magic happens. The deli counter service is efficient and fast ... the kind of organized chaos you'd expect! Your order will be nicely wrapped to go, but there are plenty of tables to sit and enjoy. read more

When you arrive you pull a number from the number distributor (similar set up to ordering meat at a market). They call you by your number and you tell them what you want. The workers there moved through the line quickly, so I received my bagel about 5-7 minutes after ordering. I ordered the salmon roe with lox and cream cheese bagel. I got mine toasted. The bagel was pretty decent! The salmon roe definitely gave the bagel a more creamy flavor. The salmon roe wasn't too salty either so it blended well with the lox and cream cheese. It wasn't anything I've had that was out of the ordinary. It was just another bagel spot that was pretty good, but I wouldn't say it's worth the craze. The shop has tons of seating and restrooms. It gets busy but as I'd mentioned, the workers move through the line pretty quickly. read more
Loved having this as a quick stop during the snow delays on Sunday. Many great options and friendly staff. I went with another salmon special bagel because wow the first one was great. Russ and daughter's toasted bagel with salmon/fish roe was savory and delicious! For 22 bucks you won't be disappointed in this quick stop near Hudson yards. Fish lovers paradise and bad coffee. Pickled herring, curried herring, i wish we could get them in the west coast. Staffs have good sense of humor with real warmth. The cured salmon sampling was an interesting experience. The sturgeon bagel sandwich, beet juice, honey cake - all were brilliant. Line was long, but worth it. read more
Existing for over 110 years has to make this a city staple...right? - at first I just wanted a simple bagel with cream cheese but everyone around me was ordering fish, there was fish art, fish smells, fish ENERGY, and then my dining companion told me he was going for a lox bagel AND whitefish salad - I ordered a sesame bagel with caviar cream cheese (WHOA) and nova lox. it came out to $18 despite just two pieces of salmon on each bagel half. there are better deals and portions out there - the bagel itself was very mid, i must say. it was small like a fist and dry, and somehow even the sesame lacked flavor. the salmon is really why you come, it is perfectly soft and stretchy. salty, a little smoky, but not overwhelming on any fishy or sodium front. - the caviar cream cheese simply needed to be tried, it tasted a lot like a salmon cream cheese. smooth and cool but fishy, like a salmon cream cheese. - there was a large line midday on Friday but it is a well oiled machine and once you order food is ready fast. about 10 tables inside for self seating read more
Service: take a number when you enter or order online. Food: I got the Pastrami Russ on a toasted everything bagel. It was so delicious. You can see the salmon in the front display windows that they use. They are super fresh and yummy. Ambiance: cute, clean modern diner. Seating along windows and also booths. Love and missed good bagels in Portland. There's so many places in NYC that it's hard to focus but this one is definitely on my wishlist. Luckily we were able to check out this branch and it did not disappoint. I got the Super Heebster, whitefish and baked salmon salad with horse radish dill cram cheese and wasabi flying fish roe in an everything bagel. My goodness was the bagel food, chewy and crispy. The filling was a little too sweet. I tried a bite of the classic bagel and lox sandwich and that's what i would get next time. I also tried their matzo ball soup and it was so good! Full of flavor, chicken, light fluffy matza ball and piping hot! The sour pickles were also nice to cut through the rich cream cheese. The best lox bagel I've had! There really isn't a place to sit down inside. So it's mainly a takeaway spot; however, they do have two benches outside. The service is by tickets; once they call your number, you order your sandwich and pay. Recommend trying this place out! read more
Heard mixed things about this place but decided to try it because the menu looked too good to pass up. This Hudson Yards location is fairly new--small space but with plenty of seating. The system is neat: grab a ticket when you walk in, wait for your number to be called to order, then pay when your food is ready. We had the Super Heebster and the Daughter's Delight. The Daughter's Delight is like an elevated smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel--fancy but familiar. The Super Heebster, though? Incredible.
