What actually really helped was taking it home and warming the other half in the microwave to soften it up. Service depends on which worker you get. Love and missed good bagels in Portland. There's so many places in NYC that it's hard to focus but this one is definitely on my wishlist. Luckily we were able to check out this branch and it did not disappoint. I got the Super Heebster, whitefish and baked salmon salad with horse radish dill cram cheese and wasabi flying fish roe in an everything bagel. My goodness was the bagel food, chewy and crispy. The filling was a little too sweet. I tried a bite of the classic bagel and lox sandwich and that's what i would get next time. I also tried their matzo ball soup and it was so good! Glad we went, glad we didn't wait in a terrible line and probably would be just as happy if not happier at a neighborhood bodega. The workers there moved through the line quickly, so I received my bagel about 5-7 minutes after ordering. I ordered the salmon roe with lox and cream cheese bagel. I got mine toasted. I was by Hudson Yards and was glad to see they expanded and opened a shop in walking distance to Penn Station. The counter works fast and efficiently. I have been a fan of Russ & Daughters for a long time. Whether its visiting their take out shop on Houston Street or their awesome cafe on Orchard Street, you really get a sense of "old New York" when you visit them. Last year they brought their classic flavors to Hudson Yards at the base of a skyscraper, a bit of a merging of the old and the new. While the exterior of this location is a modern building, the interior design pays homage to the two downtown locations. There is bold neon lettering with the "Russ & Daughters" logo and fish symbol. The interior leans heavily on white and polished silver colors, evoking diners of old. Most of the space is dedicated to a waiting area and counter, but there is counter seating and some tables towards the back. In the waiting area there are islands with merchandise and prepackaged foods such as their own brand of sardines and baked goods. When you enter you can take a number and the counter behind the erm...counter tells you what number they are up to. As a warning, if you go during the "busy" times (morning or lunch time) expect a fairly insane wait. On one of my first visits I waited about fifteen minutes for my number to be called and just gave up. However, time things right and you could be in and out in that same amount of time. If you order anything with fish, they do not have pre-sliced bits waiting to go (this isn't Subway). Everything is freshly sliced and assembled after you order and that is part of the fun. Seeing the team members expertly slice the fish and assemble a sandwich is a joy for a foodie. On my most recent visit I ordered the Shtetl sandwich featuring smoked sable and goat cream cheese. I had it on a toasted Egg Bagel. This ran $20 (which is not cheap, I admit). The sandwich was fantastic. The bagel had a good chew and wasn't tough (even after toasting) and the sable was delicious. The goat cream cheese offered a good balance with the salt in the sable. I'd get this sandwich again any time. Russ & Daughters is awesome, but the wait can sometimes be a pain.
