I've run recreationally in the past, but really hurt my knees when I trained for an Olympic distance triathlon in 2006. I didn't do any running again until 2017 when I started running less than 2 miles at a time, and realized I could do that without my knees hurting. Occasionally I would run 3 to 4 miles at a time, and feel my knees burn again. Fast forward to the pandemic and a screeching halt to in person group workouts, and any running I did reduced to a mile or less at a time. By August of 2021 I started walk / jogging again, it was going well, and by October I wanted to add more miles without getting knee pain again. A friend of mine recommended that I go to RunLab to figure out what I could do better to be able to run without hurting myself. This was one of the best recommendations I have ever received. For the past two months I have been working with Dr. Biershenk at RunLab. In that time I've been able to double my weekly running mileage without any injuries or lasting pain. Along the way to learning to move injury free, I have awakened other issues, and Dr. Biershenk has helped me to correct the new issues as they've arisen. I've been very happy with my results so far, and I plan to continue to book sessions at RunLab to improve my running. I have been running since I was young and have been to a LOT of physical therapy in my day but none have helped me think about how the way I was running led to injuries and pains. I've seen many PTs who gave me monotonous exercises and seen no real results or changes in my running. Dr. Halasz however has helped me completely revamp my form in less than 3 months. I went in with a plantar fasciitis issue and thinking that I had mobility issues in my ankles and hips. Turns out, I was running wrong. I'm a 70 year old runner who has been running basically injury free for about 40 years. I've recently experienced some hamstring and knee pain that made it painful to run. Dr. Bowers at Run Lab was able to identify the issues that contributed to the pain. Through gait training and strengthening exercises, he got me back to my running schedule. Extremely disappointing experience. The worst part of the experience was the supreme confidence the therapist had in my diagnosis and expectation of results, when none were experienced at all. Had high hopes going in given the reviews but I didn't get anything out of this other than to be told to "walk with more bounce". No exercises given, no manual therapy, no follow-up or results, etc. When I initially called I was told I had to sign up for a 4 pack of visits for $400 out of pocket, 2 of which were virtual. There's been no follow up on the virtual visits, nor do I think I'd get any value out of them. read more

RunLab is amazing! I've been hearing about RunLab's gait analysis for a while but it is really so much more comprehensive than just a session where they put you on. a treadmill and snapshot photos. Because of the work I've been doing with Dr. Stow I understand what I need to do to attain my running goals. Initially I went in because I was having knee trouble and after only a few weeks I am able to run with 0 pain. The only reason I can run is because of RunLab. I had some very painful and bothersome ankle and knee issues (torn ligaments, plantar fasciitis, old injuries, etc) that made running unpleasant for me, if not entirely impossible. I walked out of an exercise class next door at Rogue Running feeling disheartened because of the pain and an employee pointed me to RunLab (thanks, Chuck!). Now I'm back to running with no pain in the areas I went in to have checked! The staff is not just pleasant but almost like family. The genuinely care and they are enthusiastic and excited to get you back on the road again. Dr Davis gave a free seminar recently at Ready To Run and it was very enlightening. Her advice made me realize that I have some issues that are unusual and need to be addressed. Normally this would be upsetting but now I'm looking forward to being pain-free and seeing the RunLab folks again. If you are worried that your broken bits and pieces will keep you from running, if you have been told that you can't run anymore or that you shouldn't, just stop here first before you give up. I wish that all of my experiences with medicine were as full of joy and resolution as the one I've had here. read more

I can not recommend RunLab enough! I spent nearly a year suffering with an undetermined ankle injury. I saw my primary care doctor, no luck. Saw a sports medicine doctor and was wrongly diagnosed. After 15 minutes with Dr. Halasz, he knew exactly what was wrong. An MRI later and I was diagnosed with peroneal tendinitis. I got my initial gait analysis, spent almost 2 months doing PT with Lorin once a week and getting a soft tissue massage once a week. After almost a year of constant pain with running, and taking a few months off completely, in just 2 months of PT here I was running pain free! Not only that, but the team at RunLab always had me laughing and enjoying my therapy and forgetting how painful massages are... almost ;) Seriously, go here! You won't regret it! read more

I'm a late onset long-distance runner / triathlete and have been dealing with two frustrating recurring injuries for years. I've had an MRI done, gone to multiple PTs here in Austin, consulted with my PCP, consulted with specialists, and have made almost zero progress in treatment. My doctor at ARC Far West gets credit for a proper diagnosis of one of my conditions (CECS), but as he's not a specialist, he couldn't provide guidance on treatment or what the root cause might be. Other specialists and PT practices I consulted with gave contradictory advice and no one could back up their assertions with data; just "feel good" solutions (I've been burned by this too many times). I met up with John at RunLab and I knew almost right off the bat that I was working with a pro. The first appointment started with a 30' consultation to go over my entire history. Just from that John was able to confirm that I probably did have CECS (2 of 5 symptoms), but not a crazy bad case. That was a huge relief since it can be a condition where surgery can come into play. Yikes! Then we did a physical evaluation which included movements that tested things like basic strength and range of motion. During the process, and without any prior knowledge, John asked if I'd broken my left ankle as a kid; well, yes I did. That was darned impressive. After the physical evaluation, we did a few warm ups and balance exercises to test strength and to make sure I would be able to run for a few minutes for the gait analysis. Things like balancing on one foot, bending over, etc. Went through those and I got the green light to get on the treadmill. The camera setup is awesome. I ran for about 6 minutes at threshold, and I was taped from 3 angles with a really nice camera. After that, I went on my way. I came back the day after and John went over the video with me. It was fantastic to see real data and video backing up my diagnosis. After the video analysis, John went over a few exercises at the gym downstairs to improve lateral and glute strength. I now have a treatment plan and am super pumped that I actually know what's going on with my body! read more

I don't bother to write Yelp reviews for many businesses that I visit, but RunLab changed my life, so here goes. I have had pain when I run all my life and I am so happy I discovered RunLab. RunLab a Drs Office is in a real gym (Rogue Running) and addresses issues by a proven process, that most of the tech community in Austin should be familiar with, called test and learn. If you stopped running because of pain, they can help. If you have pain and are still running, they can help If you run and have no pain yet, they can help you stay running with no pain. However, don't wait until running becomes painful. If you are worried about your mechanics and joint damage, the team also can put your mind at ease and give you tips about how to manage your running to avoid any issues and joint replacements later in life. Your team will take videos of you running on a treadmill, do some static testing, look at your mechanics and determine how to address any evident or emerging issues you may have. They will actually explain to you and show you what is wrong if you want to see and here the details. The solutions could include different shoes, gait changes or a series of exercises to help with better form. Some of the gait changes they suggested have immediately produced results for me. Don't be afraid to go and visit them even if it is just to see what they do, experience the atmosphere, as it's not like any other doctors office. They are all athletes and will take the time to discuss any of your concerns and provide tips. Good luck. read more

I love the gait analysis, showing me my all around pros and cons to how I run. The massages have really helped me get rid of pain and move through difficult home rolling sessions. I started going here in August after hearing good things and I couldn't just let my Plantar carry on any longer. It's was a positive experience during my treatment. Everyone there from Dr. D, Lucas, Shane, LaQuanda, Art and Brent have been helpful in so many ways. Dr. D paved the way to identify my foot issues. First time I came in, I brought in shoes to show my wear pattern. She set me up a plan to get back on track Lucas has been awesome with the financial side getting insurance claims settled and informing me of any credits I may have. Shane has been extremely helpful with the gait analysis and strengthening. He also focuses on form and cadence to make sure I am being efficient with my runs LaQuanda and Brent have helped with the therapy side to ease the pain. Art has been helpful with the scheduling side and any other questions I may have. There are others there too but those were the main ones I interacted with. And since it's a open patient environment, I got to interact with other patients as well and the ones I interacted were friendly as well read more

Went to RunLab and had my gait analysis performed. Now, I am not the typical marathon runner here in Austin. I am a mom, who is trying to lose weight, and my body is working against me. I have pain in my calf when I run, and it nags at me consistently. I met with Kim, and she seemed really excited to be working with everyone she came across. She asked me very through questions, and wanted to know everything she could about my history with my runs. The shop on Lamar is not very big, but the people who work there are super friendly. They were meeting with people back to back, so you can tell they are very popular in the community. I've done a lot of manual therapies. I felt better after a lot of them but this has been truly miraculous. John did my gate analysis. It was so in depth. I learned how to immediately run faster and with less injuries through his suggestions. Shane does an fantastic job giving you a custom workout. I think I may be able to get into race shape soon. I'm a triathlete who's had a nagging hamstring injury for months which has been slowing down my run. Dr. Mullen was recommended to me by a fellow triathlete who had a similar injury and had received beneficial therapy from her. She did an in-depth analysis of my problem, and began to help correct it immediately using several different measures. Regular Deep tissue massage, gait analysis, core and balance exercises along with constant consultations evaluating my improvement helped rehab my hamstring and ultimately improve my run. As a distance runner for over 15 years, I have seen doctors and physical therapists who were supposed to be running experts; none of them have ever come close to offering the level of analysis, insight and personal attention I have received at RunLab. Dr. Bierschenk is excellent. I recommend him to anyone wanting to improve their running or recover from an injury. I am 69 years old but enjoy running about 30 miles a week. I developed plantar fasciitis and heel pad syndrome and could not run for six months. Dr. Bierschenk had me running within two weeks. His therapy is the only treatment that worked, including cortisone injections. He provided gait analysis, massage therapy, and balance/strength exercises. I am recovering from my injury and am finally able to run again. read more

I've been dealing with injuries that have kept me from running for the past 7 months now. I had a medial plica in my knee that required surgery, and in an effort to run through the injury to run Boston, I picked up tendinitis in my ankle. I have been to four different treatment centers over the course of eight months, and none have been as comprehensive, thorough and successful as RunLab. I can only say great things about RunLab, even though I've only been going a few weeks. I went in to see if I could avoid issues with my IT band rubbing at the knee causing debilitating knee pain once I started going 13+ miles. I was also interested in speeding up a bit. I had a great experience talking through the issues with Dr. Davis, and then started working with John for gait analysis and strength training. John was in-depth, explained everything, and really helped me understand why I was having these issues. He then gave me concrete takeaways for how we can start to improve them. I saw a massive difference within a couple of runs - things I've never thought before that had been affecting my running for years. I've been working for Jimmy for a few sessions now too, and he's great. Really pushes me, but also explains everything. My marathon is in February, and I fully expect to be able to follow up on this review with a positive update. Dr. Halasz at RunLab is AMAZING!!!! I cannot recommend him enough. He has such a passion for his work and a phenomenal understanding of running and biomechanics. What makes RunLab so unique is they don't try to force you into a set running form. Through filming they determine your specific issues and work with your unique mechanics to make your form the best and most efficient it can be. Dr. Halasz does such a fantastic job explaining every part of the process. For example when I tweak my form like "x" this will load my muscles and not my joins to prevent injuries down the road. He coaches you through every drill and constantly provides feedback how you can improve. My shin splints have tremendously improved and learned so much about running mechanics in the process! read more

I. Love. RunLab! I had some minor injuries that had been plaguing me for a while - some SI joint stuff, mainly. I'd visited a chiropractor and a physical therapist for a while, both of whom got me back into alignment, but I kept having issues. RunLab is different in that they addressed what was *causing* the SI joint stuff, not just dealt with the symptoms. The whole staff is helpful and smart and just fun to be around. Great massage therapists, too!! Ya gotta love walking away from a massage feeling sore, ha! I can't recommend this place enough, whether you're suffering from a major injury or just have some nagging pains that are preventing you from feeling your best, this place is THE place for runners. My son and I went to RunLab and just finished my on-line movement analysis consult with John. He, Dr. Fridley and their experts who viewed our running videos were able to give us answers and solutions to help with my plantar fasciitis. John was able to explain in simpler terms to my 7 year-old who grasped that he needed to use more of hip than his calf when running. I am grateful for the recommendations that were given. I had already tried my family doctor and my chiropractor but their bandage solution was only temporary. I had done stretches they had recommended but I was still having pain. Lauren Howell, one of the LMTs, has been a fantastic help! Her work on my legs has made a huge difference and enabled me to run as much as I wanted. When I first went to see Dr. Mullen, I had nagging knee pain while running. She spent so much time with me asking very detailed questions, looking at the soles of my shoes and testing my muscles for strength and flexibility. She was able to hone in quickly on the root of the problem. She did some very deep soft tissue work on my legs and then showed the most effective ways to use a foam roller for my situation. She also gave me exercises to do on my own. The next time I came in she did a gait analysis and showed me on a slow motion video what was happening when I was running. I have been so happy with the results of my treatments. I have been able to run free of knee pain for almost a year now! Can't express how thankful I am for these guys. I came to Runlab after not finding the results I needed from another PT, and have been with them ever since. They are freakishly knowledgeable (sometimes I just nod because I don't have a clue what they just said - BIG words). Wow! Kim is an incredible Chiropractor and being a triathlete and adventure racer herself she understands athletes issues from both a professional and "walked the walk" perspective. RunLab is awesome! I've been marathoning for several years but have always struggled to put in enough mileage due to frequent injury. I went in for a gait analysis at RunLab 3 months ago and found my problem (glute/hip weakness and some stride tweaks). John and the others at RunLab (Don, Cyndi) have been walking me (patiently) though targeted strengthening exercises and I have been able to ramp up my weekly mileage without injury. Took me from zero miles due to knee injury, to running over 20 a week while pushing my mile times down. Run might be in the name, but they have also helped with minor swim injuries(to my foot) and did a bike fit for me as well. Really helping me push my training for triathlon. Like others, I had been to other clinics for the same injury with limited gains. RunLab's approach was unique and really addressed what was going wrong. Initially I was happy with the evaluation and treatment at run lab. But then every time I came in there was a different person working with me and despite having to "tell my story" every time they seemed to have no history or records. I did a filming of my running but that was never assessed. It is just chaos in there most times. Treatments may be ok but you have to stay on top on what is needed, what kind of treatment you need to schedule and when. And yes don't be surprised if they randomly charge your credit card 6months after the fact or anytime in between that time frame. this place is just poorly managed, too bad on a good chiropractor and therapist (at least 1 or 2 of the ones that worked on me). read more
