The Rumalution Rum Cake crew was out in the Merrifield Farmers Market and they were so high energy that I had to come over for one of their "free" samples. Happened upon this wonderful establishment on Wednesday as a side trip to Manassas en route to a John McLaughlin/Zakir Hussein/Shakti concert at Wolf Trap (which was phenomenal!). Who can resist the call of rum cakes?! Upon entering I noticed how clean and orderly the cafe area was--and of course the aroma was heavenly! Also, one can see directly into the prep area, which is a plus for me; like the cafe it was immaculate. I had intended to just pop in & quickly grab a cake & keep going but happily I was in any hurry & the woman (who I learned is the sister of the owner) who attended me was so gracious, offering me warm samples of their MANY delicious freshly made varieties. Oh my goodness, what delicacies they had to offer But that's not all folks: they also do homemade ice cream, which were equally scrumptious! I left with personal sized coconut and also pineapple cakes. As an added bonus the owner, a super gracious, positive young man with an infectious smile offered me the first tasting of a new concoction he was perfecting: a coffee Kahlua cookie with the most luscious icing. A fabulous part of a perfectly lovely & blessed day in Virginia. I live about 2.5 hours away in PA & I rarely get down as far as Manassas so thankfully they ship! read more

Not gonna lie, I almost bypassed these guys on my way out of the Mosaic Central Farm Market. I had already eaten some amazing BBQ, fresh strawberries, berry pie, nut-free granola, and had downed a generous concoction of freshly pressed juice, so there really wasn't too much room left in my soul for another bite until everything settled down in the pit... The cakes were drier than the Sahara. Idk what happened. I got my usually coconut and it was terrible. I didn't even eat my second one. My husband got the white velvet and he didn't eat his either. It tasted just like a vanilla bundt cake without rum and it was worst than my coconut one. The owner hasn't been to the farmers market in 3 weeks now.. so we were forced to head over to his store.. A friend had the pineapple and chocolate rum cakes at a party. Both were perfectly balanced, moist and not overly sweet like most all the ones I previously had. Rum cake seems to have a bad reputation due to people putting way too much rum. It ends up overpowering the other flavors. These were the first rum cakes I ever had where just the right amount of rum is used to where all the ingredients are in perfect harmony.
