Was happy with how easy it was to get the cake. The lady worked with me on a very short notice. Not sure if it was family run but gave this type of vibe. The cake did seem like a certain style of cake that's not the norm for me, not very rich and with very mild flavor to it. I got the smallest cake size I believe, it was $60. A Black Forest cake. Chocolate wasn't rich, had pie filling type cherries between each layer. Although I prefer a heavier, sweeter and richer flavor it didn't make me feel sick afterwards like the cakes I have had in the past. I was pleased with the cake appearance. Cake has a fluffier texture that I've read some complaints believe is dry, but if you don't like super sweet things these cakes would probably be a good fit for you. I could be wrong but I sense that this is a style of cake, not necessarily what many of us are used to(definitely not a Cheesecake Factory type of dessert). Hopefully this review makes sense. Ordered here before for the cupcakes, which were amazing! For the cakes: it's a hit or miss on the design but always spot-on on the taste. I think this business should invest in hiring cake decorators for custom cakes (so it's a maybe for me for custom cakes), but for last-minute or "just because" cakes and cupcakes, I recommend them. The staff is always accommodating every time I visit so that's a plus. read more

I never write reviews however this is warranted to save someone else the headache. First issue: My husband purchased a cake and when he went to pick it up, they said one of their machines wasn't working. Ok fine, mistakes/things happen however an employee or the owner should've called us to communicate that. They delivered the cake to his work that day, however it was late. Second issue: My husband ordered a cake for my birthday, he went to pick it up and was told by the employee they "just forgot." Third and last time I ever order: My sons $135 cake, the lettering is crooked and it looks sloppy. I could've gone to a chain grocery store for much cheaper and without this sloppy appearance. The one place that knew exactly what I was asking for and had no problem making it! Happy Eatery has been around forever...back in the day, 40 year ago lol, it was first opened in Alexandria/Arlington. It's a Chinese bakery so I remembered my parents taking us as kids once a month for a treat! Chinese desserts are usually light and too sweet...so this was the only place my parents went for our cakes, not the heavily iced "American" cakes hahaha! Anyways, since they opened the bakery in Manassas (they also had a shop in Centreville that I have gone to), I just never had the chance to stop in...until now! I wanted to like this place. They will help you in a pinch but they do not honor the time the quote you that the cake will be ready. They also did not finish the decorations on my cake. This cake shop has been my go-to for birthday cakes for several years now. We usually order a custom cake ahead of time (nothing too fancy, usually a mocha cake with almond and a few strawberries decorating the top), but they will also have cakes of various sizes available in the case to take the same day. We opted this time for a small caramel macchiato cake from the case along with individual rectangular slices of vanilla with strawberry and chocolate without ganache that we planned to enjoy later that night. They thoughtfully taped the small box of slices to the top of the whole cake box to prevent it from sliding around during transport. I will say that the individual slices are NOT a good representative sample of how their whole cakes taste. The slices were close textured and overly sweet but the round cake we enjoyed at the birthday was spongy, soft, lightly sweet and it got rave responses from the family. read more

My family and I decided to give this place a try as a possible wedding catering option and ordered several flavors of their cupcakes. While their workers were very kind and helpful to our dietary questions, each one of their cupcakes was truly God awful. The icing was either weirdly bitter or simply had no flavor. We ordered our Christmas desserts to take up to NJ and my family was so happy. The apple pie was delicious...overflowing with apples. The peanut butter pie was so creamy and a hit with the kids. This is by far the best cake bakery in Virginia for one important reason; healthy cakes. I know that may sound like a dream come true but it is healthy bakery. I ordered cake for my husband's birthday and we are keto dieter more so myself and the cake was absolutely delicious and I had a slice then measured my ketones still good and my glucose was still good. Had I bought a cake from any other bakery or grocery store; I would have found that my measures all skyrocketed. It is safe to eat healthy cakes and treats in moderation if you only know where to go. The coffee was hot and tasty. Unfortunately the cupcake was pretty hard from being in the refrigerated case for a while. I had to cut into to eat it. Overall the cupcake looked very appetizing and clearly would have been better at room temperature. This is the only place I have been that puts their cupcakes in a refrigerated case. I'll stop in again and try it again. Finally visited their location in Manassas VA last week. Many moons ago, they were located in Centreville VA near my house and we frequented them quite often for birthday cakes, etc. Since they moved further away from me, I hadn't been over there in quite some time. The husband and I were in the area and wanted to get a bite to eat. I noticed they now had sandwiches and lunch stuff, so I suggested we check them out. It's a cute, clean little place in a strip mall near Red Robin on Liberia. They have a nice display of the cakes and pastries they are known for - lots of items using fondant to create special occasion cakes. They had several different cakes in the shapes of things such as "purses" and other unusual items. I liked their pastry and cupcake display case the best though - everything looked very appetizing and inviting. First things first, however...we were there for lunch. I had a grilled ham and brie sandwich while the hubs chose the Monte Cristo sandwich, which is not easy to find. He was thrilled that it was on the menu. The wait was a little longer than expected, but boy were those sandwiches delicious! Wow, we were very impressed with the quality and taste! We did save room for dessert. Believe me, it was a difficult decision to choose which delectable delight we wanted to try because everything looked so good. I ended up with a slice of the mocha cake and he had a hazelnut Napoleon. Both were good, but I think would have been better at room temperature, since both the cream and cake were a little stiff from being chilled. I also took home a few of their lovely cupcakes for the family, but I'll be honest and tell you I did try a bite or two of each one! Keeping them out for a few hours greatly improved the texture - the raspberry amaretto was my favorite. Yummmm. The icing had a weird consistency. It was super sticky but soft at the same time. It kind of reminded me of Elmer's glue but on steroids. I will say that the icing wasn't super sweet which I like and the bread part was good. My husband's cupcake was a lot better. The icing was soft not too sweet and the bread part was good as well. Very unassuming and I've passed by this bakery so many times. I was looking for cupcakes for a baby shower and decided to do a tasting with family who were visiting. My criteria were they had to be moist, favorable, no heavy sweet icing and large cupcakes. We tried 3 local bakeries and hands down Happy Eatery won in all criteria. We tried several favors including vegan and all were very moist and delicious. For the shower I selected vanilla, chocolate, and red velvet with buttercream icing. The icing is fluffy and the perfect compliment of sweetness to the cupcake favors. The guest loved them and I was fortunate enough to have a few leftovers. I stored them in the refrigerator and 3 days later, they were still moist and tasty after sitting out for 15 minutes or more at room temperature.
