I have been eating at Rudy's for years. Hundreds of times. And I liked it a lot. However, about an hour ago, I went to the downtown location here and ordered a chicken burrito to go. I asked to please get a couple of small cups of pico de gallo as I don't eat the other garnishments. But they insisted on charging me for that if I wanted some, unlike previously. The burrito came and it was one of the very smallest burritos I've ever been served. The price of the tiny burrito with a one dollar tip, which even that they didn't deserve, was $17.93! Ridiculous! I won't go back. This is how you lose loyal customers! Don't like being ripped off! Just needed something to eat as I had been out all day. Should have cancelled my order! A heads up to you Rudy's. Rudy's is a charming corner Mexican restaurant with two large booths and smaller table seating. I enjoyed Rudy's tasty and crispy shredded beef taco combo plates! The beef was tender and juicy in its crispy shell! I slathered it with their spicy red salsa and enjoyed some chips with their chunky mild salsa. Their steak sopes were clearly delicious as I watched my travel companion wolf down the first one! The portions were generous and the second sopes had to be taken to go. Very reasonably priced. We arrived just before their dinner rush at 6:15 pm, but when we left it was pretty busy. Clearly a spot in the neighborhood that is frequented by locals. Walked over from our hotel for dinner one night. No wait to order, plenty of seating. Got a one item combo with crispy chicken taco and an order of chicken taquitos. The taco was huge but was mostly shredded lettuce, not a lot of flavor. Salsa from the salsa bar helped. Taco fell apart while trying to eat it. I removed half of the lettuce & that made it more manageable. Beans and rice were good. Taquitos were ok. Nice salsa bar available. Probably wouldn't return. read more

Stopped by Rudy's for a good dinner with the wife before attending an event across the street at the Lobero Theatre. I was greeted warmly by the staff and asked if I needed help or recommendations. I ordered the Chicken Flautitas Verdes. Wow was I pleasantly surprised. HUGE flautas loaded with seasoned chicken. No sides but plenty of green sauce and cream. We had the churros for dessert which come with 6 smaller churros with a side of dulce de Leche. Highly recommend. Good take out restaurant, street parking is limited. I have two benchmarks for what makes a Mexican restaurant good. 1 - they need a solid breakfast burrito with simple ingredients . 2 - they need to have amazing Carnitas. Today I tried their #2 breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs, cheese and beans. Let me tell you, it was far from number 2 and was a solid 10! Certainly did not disappoint. A very generous portion with well distributed ingredients all wrapped up inside a warm flower tortilla the size of my forearm! Add into the mix a salsa bar with a little something for everybody and you have a perfect breakfast experience. A few outdoor tables and lots of indoor tables (empty on a Friday night in January). Street parking seemed readily available as well. They have a small salsa bar with ~5 salsas to try and pick from. This spot is one of 3 locations and probably my favorite of them all, due to how spacious it is inside and the consistency of freshly made food they have served for my takeout orders. Obviously right now during COVID-19 there is no inside dining and there are only a few tables outside to sit at. This location is rarely busy from my experience but that could be due to their location being off the beaten path and also the number of mexican restaurants we have in this town competing against each other. Everyone has their preferences in what mexican food should taste like, but I'm not too picky so Rudy's comes through when I'm in a pinch. They are known for their huge crispy tacos which are heavily stuffed with shredded chicken or beef, lettuce, and cheese. It's so overly packed that I usually have to remove a lot of the lettuce just to bite into the taco. No complaints here because once you bite into the taco, it is delicious! The salmon tacos are my sons favorite and the best part is their corn tortillas are homemade. His other go to item on the menu is the vegetarian burrito. My go to's are the chicken enchiladas, tacos and nachos. Selection of salsas are mild, medium and hot with your choices of green, red or roasted salsa. Overall the service here is always welcoming and friendly. The wait time is pretty quick for walk-in orders. Don't forget to wear a mask, bring hand sanitizer and keep your distance! read more

As you all know, a crispy taco from Rudy's is a meal by itself. Night two, I had flour tortillas at home and made a chille relleno burrito using half the relleno with some rice and beans. This particular Rudy's is centrally located across from the beautiful Presidio Chapel which makes for great people watching. Whether it is their "famous crispy taco" (stuffed with beef, of course), a massive torta, or the saucy enchiladas, you can't go wrong. Prices are reasonable--especially if you own an Axxess card. My fiancé and I met up for dinner to avoid rush hour traffic home. It's been a couple years since I was there last and I had a better experience. My last visit, I ordered a burrito and received it lukewarm and the cheese was not even melted inside my burrito. We had an AXXESS card deal so decided we would give the restaurant another try. Fast forward two years... Such a great experience! For one, I've gone from being a vegetarian to being mostly vegan. I feel like their menu now has more vegan and vegetarian options than before. I ordered the vegan sopas and they were outstanding! Very flavorful! The sopas Were soft but crispy on the outside. They did not skimp on the avocado sliced on top. The salsa bar was delicious! My fiancé ordered the shredded chicken burrito. He really enjoyed it as well. The staff were very friendly. The restaurant was clean. I'm glad we gave the restaurant another chance. The 1 star is for today 10:30 to 11 ish, Huevos Rancheros. Your employees on Canon Perdido need to learn how to read or at least serve what is on the menu. Stopped by for lunch to-go as I have driven by so many times and wondered what it was all about. The portions are very large, well put together. They have all of the super standard options, tacos, enchiladas, nachos. Everything was made well and they were fast and friendly. They have A 2 for 1 Axxess deal and 10 percent off after that. I was happy with my food and what I ordered the people were nice. The only thing is, I felt like this was very Americanized Mexican food. This is pretty close to work for me, so heading over after was a good choice to satisfy my Mexican food cravings. There is only street parking (15 or 75 minutes), but it is right on the corner so there a couple of different streets for you to look for. The inside was very clean and the staff members were respectful. I was able to use the AXXESS deal for BOGO entree item. I ended up getting the chimichanga with carnitas and a class if burrito with el pastor. I have only had the chimichanga so far because I'm saving the burrito for tomorrow's lunch. The chimichanga was very flavorful and came in a large portion smothered in a sauce and guacamole and sour cream in the side. I do think that I should have asked for the sauce on the side because it made the fried-ness soggier. So besides it being not as crispy, the flavor was good. read more

If you like old school traditional crispy tacos, then go to Rudy"s! I love the shredded beef tacos. You can order as a combo with rice and beans. 1 taco is plenty with the sides so the price is extremely reasonable. Around $10. Now let's talk about that taco. Crispy shell filled with tender meat, shredded lettuce and tons of shredded cheddar cheese! So good! Add some salsa from the salsa bar and you willl be smiling as you take that first crunchy bite!! I just cannot profess my love for Rudy's enough. I work a block away and come here often. I've NEVER been let down. My go to is the chicken fajita bowl and it easily lasts me two meals. I've also gotten burritos, salads, and tacos and have loved it all. They also have a great assortment of Mexican soda, horchata, and a Coke soda machine for those days when you just need a fountain Diet Coke (none of that Pepsi nonsense). They have delicious chips and a great salsa bar (that includes spicy onions and carrots). Their staff is amazing and they're quick with great service. I'm here at least once a week and would visit more if my budget allowed! read more

My usual spots were closed. So i decided to give it a try. I called in and asked for prices. It was a bit more expensive, but decided to go for it. I got there some minutes before their "it should be ready in 15". I felt all the attention was on me and how much i tipped. The cashier felt like she did not care about anything about me besides her tip. I waited on one of their booths and after 15 minutes i had to go ask about my order. Not only did i have to go ask but i listen to all their gossip and about them stories which was annoying. When i did get my order the cashier took it out of the and gave it to me with no utensils or napkins. The food was greasy and just plain. I usually love supporting local, small, hole-in-the-wall restaurants, but this one missed the mark in both food and service. While the ambiance fits more of a fast-food takeout spot, the prices are reasonable. Unfortunately, I ordered the Alambre Enchiladas Verdes from the vegan menu, and my mom ordered the Combo Crispy Beef Tacos. After paying at the front, I ended up eating one of her tacos because my enchiladas were soggy, tasteless, and missing the mushrooms. When I inquired about the missing mushrooms, the server said she'd check with the kitchen, suggesting they were probably unavailable. It took about 10 minutes, and only after I made eye contact, did she confirm this. I mentioned that they should inform customers or remove the item from the menu, to which she simply replied, "there's nothing we can do," without even offering an apology. In the end, this restaurant seems better suited for to-go orders and crispy tacos, but we likely won't be returning. read more

I LOVE Rudy's! But this is not Rudy's. Not sure if the owner is different or what is going on. I ordered from this location for a Grubhub discount however I usually go to the one on montecito street. This location tastes SO different. I have gotten the nachos with shredded chicken for at least 20 years. This is the first time I've ever ordered and gotten 1/4 of it sloshed with Pico de Gallo (never even had that at any Rudy's).. so that really ruined it. The chicken was different and the texture was really mushy. The chips even tasted different. $17 for nachos and they were awful. The menu may be the same but there is nothing similar about taste/quality! I hate giving bad reviews but sadly this deserved one. read more
