Sweet Heat Chicken and French Toast Bites
Megan C.

This was the cutest brunch spot in Columbia. My sister and I went the morning of her graduation and it had so many great options. They had a long list of fruity cocktails and coffee drinks, along with endless brunch options. I went with the sweet heat chicken and French toast bites and it was amazing. My sister had the BYO Omelet that was also loaded with flavors. Our server Linda was super helpful and gave me syrup recommendations for the chicken and French toast.

Hot honey chicken biscuit with breakfast potatoes

First time coming here was for Yelp elite week but decided to sit in this time to get the full experience. It was a slow day inside so we were immediately seated. Our waitress was so sweet and helpful. This time I tried the hot honey chicken biscuit with a side of the breakfast potatoes. I found the meal to be enjoyable. I wouldn't say the flavors completely blew me away. The biscuit itself was good but the chciken lacked flavor in my opinion. The breakfast potatoes also fell flat for me. Definitely willing to come back and try something else.

Our experience from the time of arrival to the time we left was simply wonderful. Our waitress Candice was phenomenal. She was multitasking very well and didn't skip a beat with our service. The atmosphere was great and inviting. We arrived at 8am and the business quickly picked up, which is a good sign. I had the Classic French Toast, Beignets and coffee. The wife had the Southern Breakfast. The food was served at excellent temperature and presentation. This was our first time at this establishment and would definitely return and recommend.

The food is always great and our waitress was very attentive. We made a reservation and was seated right away.

Was stationed at Fort Jackson recently and had the opportunity to check this place out! The food was very amazing and filling! It was perfect amount!!!

Berry Chantilly Pancakes

Food was just alright and was nothing like the pictures . The Berry Chantilly Pancakes had a grand total for 2 full cut strawberries and 12 whole blueberries throughout . Taste was good but price was a joke for what you got . The 2 slices of bacon cost $4 , the slices were small average flavor . Our waitress took our order , dropped the food and only came back to hand the bill after we asked for it . Definitely was a slow day only a small hand full of tabled 3-4 total . I am not sure if this is normal or just a bad day . I do not think I can bring myself to come back and retry . We chose Ruby Sunshine after seeing all the good reviews and we're looking forward to a good experience and food . Unfortunately it was a big let down .

Arrived and somehow I missed the sign outside that says that you can park behind the building for free. So I paid for parking on the side of the building, not a huge deal. I was greeted by the hostess, who seated me immediately. I got a water and a coffee and ordered the beignets. I had the option of the fruity beignets or the original and since I hadn't had a beignet before, I thought it was best to get the original. They came out hot and delicious! I wasn't expecting to get so many and was super excited about that. If I had to change anything about the beignets, it would be more powdered sugar. It had enough powdered sugar, but I love powdered sugar so I would have added more for myself. I also ordered the Florentine omelette, which was delicious. It had goat cheese in it along with mushrooms. It looks like it was made with two eggs. It was delicious. There is also a homemade biscuit that came with what I think is a sweetened ghee. It tasted delicious, it melted in your mouth. That's all might also came with a small side salad with a vinaigrette dressing, which was really good as well. I would go back and get this again and again.

Chicken and waffles

Fun staff serving up New Orleans Classics. While the indoor decor was a bit bland, the food and overall dining experience was certainly a memorable ! For my first visit I tried the shrimp and grits and chicken and waffles. I personally found the waffle to be a bit on the sweet side, but absolutely fell in love with the chicken. The chicken was one of the moistest pieces of meat I've ever had and delicately breaded. The chicken itself was so good that no extra syrup was required. The shrimp and grits were also quite delicious. The creole sauce was lightly spiced and allowed the natural flavors of our SC Adulah grits to shine through. For dessert, we tried the peaches and cream beignet, which was unfortunately a tad bit dry. A heads up if you're visiting us, parking in the area is very limited and it can take several laps around the area before finding a spot .

Banana Pudding Stuffed French Toast - Sweet, rich, and one of the better parts of the meal.

Not All That Sunny at Ruby Sunshine When our group of three walked in, the experience started off on the wrong foot--no one was at the host stand, and when the hostess finally appeared, there was no greeting or welcome. I told her there were three of us, and without a word she grabbed menus and silverware and walked off, leaving us to trail behind her. Not exactly the warm Southern hospitality we were hoping for. Once seated (after moving tables away from the patio door draft), service became a bit more attentive, but overall it felt inconsistent. For drinks, we ordered water, a cappuccino, and I asked for an Americano. I was told they don't serve that, which was puzzling since an Americano is just espresso with hot water. The confusion grew when I realized that a cappuccino is an espresso-based drink. Another person ordered an espresso. If those are available, it didn't make sense why an Americano wasn't. Food was a mixed bag: Spanish Omelette. Not for me (not a fan of bell peppers). Trifecta (Cochon, Chicken St. Charles, Bayou Shrimp). The Bayou Shrimp stood out as the winner. Biscuits & Gravy Plate. Three biscuits felt like overkill; the scrambled eggs with cheese were dry and clumpy. The Sweet Heat Chicken add-on, however, was excellent--I'd gladly order that again. Banana Pudding Stuffed French Toast. Sweet, rich, and one of the better parts of the meal. Overall, Ruby Sunshine had some bright spots (that Sweet Heat Chicken and the French Toast), but the lack of hospitality and uneven food quality made the visit underwhelming. For the price, I expected more consistency and value--it just didn't feel worth what we paid. Decent, but not one I'd rush back to.

Breakfast sandwich with chicken sausage
Laura P.

Great restaurant in a cute part of town. The biscuit breakfast sandwich with the chicken sausage was so delicious. The staff did amazing on what appeared to be a busy Monday. We did expect a plate with our beignet app but we just helped ourselves As we were wrapping it up, Mom was asking for another refill on coffee and the waitress brought it in a to go cup!! Definitely would come back for the multiple options of fun drinks

This place was in the heart of five points downtown Columbia. They had a nice twist on New Orleans style brunch with sweet, savory an a plethora of options. The drinks/mimosas looked great too I would definitely go back to try one! The service was good and the inside was so bright and fun.

The only reason I didn't go 5 stars is because the length of the menu, I was thinking more.....but honestly the choices they had will make me come back! The food was pretty good overall, but my chicken salad sandwich was extremely disappointing. The croissant was very dry, and the shredded chicken combined with the consistency of the dressing was not at all what I expected. After only a couple bites, I left the entire sandwich untouched. What was even more disappointing was that when our waitress brought the bill, she clearly noticed I hadn't eaten the sandwich and chose not to ask about it. At this price point for lunch, I would have expected the situation to be handled a little differently. We sat in the covered outdoor area, which was nice, but there's also an uncovered outdoor section with older picnic tables that don't really match the vibe of a more upscale lunch spot. If you plan to sit outside, I'd recommend making your seating preference clear when booking.

They were all so sweet and really went above and beyond to make sure it was a high-quality experience. I noticed that they openly advertise that they don't accept tips and have slightly higher prices in order to pay their workers a living wage, and the results were directly reflected in the customer service that I received. As for the food and drink (coffee), that was pretty good as well! While I do wish that they might have had bagels, the croissant that I substituted it for was warm, buttery, and tasty, and it was a nice change from my usual coffee shop meal, as I've only had a croissant a handful of times. The coffee was fine, and I loved how they offered free refills, which I've noticed that other local coffee shops usually don't. Finally, I loved the setting of the restaurant, which gave you the opportunity to either sit inside and enjoy the ambiance or on the outside patio and enjoy some peace and quiet. I also loved the artwork that they had on the walls, which the waitress informed me was painted by a local artist and which you could purchase if you wanted to. All-in-all, I loved smallSUGAR, will be back in the future, and would highly recommend stopping in!

Service was fine. Nothing particularly standout, but smooth and efficient. For drinks, the coffee was average. It wasn't bad by any means, just nothing memorable. Especially considering the price point. Food-wise, there were some highlights. The sweet potato bowl was well-dressed and flavorful, though it felt like it was missing a protein component to make it more complete. The shakshuka was very good overall, with great flavor, though it leaned a bit salty. The biggest issue was the bread portion. It simply wasn't enough for the dish. I ended up ordering an extra side, and while it's listed as two slices, it's really just one slice cut in half. At $4 for that portion, that is very unreasonable. That was a recurring theme. Pricing felt high across the board for what you receive. While the flavors were there, nothing really stood out as exceptional enough to justify the cost. Overall, not a bad visit. Just one where the value didn't quite match the experience.

Bison, elk, boar, rabbit. These are proteins you don't see on most menus. The restaurant leans into a woodland theme with greenery hanging throughout the space. It borders on a bit much, but the open kitchen visible from the dining room grounds the whole experience and adds a nice touch of theater. The seating was comfortable and well spaced, perfect for a family dinner where you actually want to hear each other talk. Our server was outstanding, easily 5 out of 5. She knew the menu cold, offered thoughtful recommendations, and struck that ideal balance of attentive without being intrusive. She made the evening better. The drinks were mostly a win. Two cocktails were excellent, creative and well balanced. A third was over iced and fell flat. Minor miss, but worth noting. The food is where The Hollow really shines. The charcuterie board was a fantastic start, featuring a well curated spread of wild game meats, quality cheeses, fig, and mustard. The mains delivered across the board: salmon, elk, and bison all came out beautifully with great flavor and generous portions. The sides deserved their own applause, which isn't something I say often. The dessert menu was the one soft spot. Nothing grabbed our attention, so we ended up heading across the street to Kaminsky's for something sweet. For a kitchen that puts this much care into everything else, the dessert offerings felt like an afterthought. A couple of notes on the bill to be aware of: we were charged a few dollars for swapping a vegetable side. There was a 3% credit card surcharge that caught us off guard. When you're out with the family and the tab runs into the hundreds $, most folks are paying with a card. That's a fee I'd want to know about upfront. On the menu, from the server, somewhere visible before the check arrives. The bottom line: The Hollow is a creative, well executed restaurant with standout food and excellent service. If you're in Columbia, it's well worth a reservation.

Upon entering the hostess informed us they were currently only serving the late night menu. We said no problem and elected to grab seats at the bar. There were several empty tables and a few empty seats @ the bar. However, the only two seats together at the bar needed to be cleared from the last patrons that were seated. We stood there for over 20 mins while Jacob continued to walk by never acknowledging us or the fact that we couldn't sit. When he finally cleared the dishes he just walked away, never cleaning the area. When he returned he still never greeted us or apologized for the wait, the mess... nothing. Jacob: What are you having? Me: Well hello... Jacob: Yea... what do you want? Me: Wow... ok. For starters can you please whip off the bar so we can properly have a seat. There is still food residue here from the last customers. ** we get a visible huff** He wipes down the bar and we proceed to order drinks, while he never really speak any more it's all via motions and body language. Amongst ourselves we check in with one another to confirm that we both were feeling very unwelcome. Instantly we decide that we will not be ordering anything additional and will be leaving after this one drink. Which is just as well because Jacob never returns. Someone , whom I can only assume was of a mangement status, asked if Jacob was helpful and we promptly and simultaneously said no and that we would like or bill. She shook her head in utter disbelief and disgust but then she also disappeared. Just so happened that Diamond, whom was on the other side of the bar happen to walk pass. She stopped and asked if we were ok after witnessing our frustration. We explained that we wanted the check and why we were leaving. She was super apologetic and closed out our tab. Her energy literal turned the experience around and if she would have came to our rescue sooner we would have considered staying. Thank you Diamond. Just A Note: Unfortunately, bad first impression because The Grand seems like it may offer a good time with the bowling lanes in the back.
