Chinese buffet have only three ratings, good, okay or bad. Ruby is good. Well prepared and tasty chinese dishes, lots of selections, nice quick staffs. Apparently, lots of people come here for the king crab legs. Every time the staff brings out a tray, it is gone in a flash. But I found the king crab legs pretty tasteless. On the other hand, the other dishes are well worth a try. Run of the mill stuffs but tasty. I like the cold mix sea food and the stir fry mix shell fish in particular. The sushi bar is pretty basic. Nothing to ga ga over. Anyway, good enough for me to come back once in a while. read more

Ruby is the BOMB. I love a good Chinese buffet. This is one of the best I've been to. No frills. Big selection and clean and spacious. It's worth it even if you just go for the sushi- it's really fresh and good and they've got some interesting rolls with kiwi and stuff in them. The amount of sushi rolls and sashimi that I eat there would easily cost me more than $30 elseware. At Ruby I get all that sushi, along with soup and crab legs and fried chicken and ice cream and my total is $15 including a drink and tip!!! If you want candlelight and ambiance and get annoyed with screaming children, you won't like this place. But if you like Chinese buffets and good bargain, it's the best around! read more

I'm not a big fan of buffets but when I get that craving this is my go to place. The only better place I've tried is Hong Kong King buffet in Feasterville. The sushi here is just ok, but everything else from the chinese choices is pretty good. There's not much to say specifically since there's so many. The place is well kept and clean and tidy. Ruby is by far the best asian buffet I have ever went to hands down. The selection can't be beat. They even have all you can eat sushi and it's really good too. I actually head there first as soon as I get in. I think the lunch is by far the best deal for your dollar. Some Ruby buffet highlights: watching a single man fill one the shell bowls up with vanilla soft serve icecream. watching a fight almost happen during the dinner crab leg steamer tray. This is my preferred Chinese buffet in the Philly area. There's a good (not staggeringly huge, but good) selection, a good amount of fresh seafood. The only thing that I had here that was not good were the raw oysters...I grabbed two and one of them was not fresh--that's pretty bad, I think it's VERY important to keep raw seafood fresh, and I'd rather this place just not offer raw oysters unless they're not going to be able to keep them consistently fresh. The rest of the seafood, including the fresh seafood and the raw fish at the sushi bar, was great. The sushi is above average for a buffet, but not quite as good as the typical sushi from a good sit-down place. There are soups, some fried foods (not too greasy), and there's a good selection of fruits and salady things at the salad bar. They not only have egg roles, but they have shumai, sticky rice, and some other more dim-sum type items. There are fewer of the classic Chinese-American items, but there are some, and they're good quality. One of the highlights of this place that is unique to here--I've never seen it elsewhere--is a dill seafood salad, made with squid and scallops and other seafood, with lemon juice and fresh dill. It is quite exquisite! Another favorite dish of mine here is the baby clam with black bean sauce...really good. The only downside of this place is that it can get very loud and crowded, especially on weekends. How crowded does it get? Crowded enough that I don't feel comfortable leaving a purse or wallet at the table, and I'm rarely paranoid about that sort of thing. I'm not a big fan of buffets. Before my friends convinced me to try Ruby buffet for the first time in Feb, 2009 I honestly had not been to one since junior high. Since then, however, it's become the place for me and the ladies to get over episodes of "post-party depression". Chinese food is always a great hangover cure. The food is fine. The crab legs go fast, but they are almost constantly bringing out trays. I've had raw oysters almost every time i've been and have never had a qualm with the freshness or quality. I'm not the biggest fan of the sushi, especially since the one time they made rolls with fried chicken inside. so unpleasantly unexpected. What i do get jazzed about is the roast duck, the crab backs when they serve them, the steamed crayfish, and the baby clams. I also really like the fried chicken wings. Like everyone has said, the service is really pleasant and efficient. Also, they dont really advertise it, but Ruby Buffet is BYOB. We've come with champagne and they provided us with little plastic cups and OJ to make mimosas. I would say it's the best buffet in the city, but it's honestly the only one i've been to. read more

I have been here for dinner and lunch and I can't remember people being rude like many of the reviews have stated. Then again, it's been a while since I was there for dinner. Last time I was here was after the movies, it was around 1 and we were starving, so where to go for a quick meal that isn't Burger King or popcorn? The Buffet!!! Yea, yea the food is americanized but I def. think it's worth it if you're not one of those authentic snobs, you need to know what you're getting into. Word of advice, make sure you read the label because I have almost dished myself some "dinner" items when it's lunch time. Please be advised that they are sneaky like that and may charge you extra if you grab some of the 'better' items. As for customer service, nothing superb. They bring you something to drink and they take away your dirty dishes. They should have better rules about kids running around grabbing sweets and acting like it's their home. Solid 4 star Chinese join along Columbus blvd. We went there for dinner on Fathers day, big props for the Mother's day sign with duct tape covering Mother and writing Father in sharpie. The place was PACKED, yet we were seated right away! Our waitress came over and wasn't frazzled by the hoards coming in the front door, quick to get us drinks and attentive without being annoying. To the food, overall I was impress, my fiancee more than I but, we both agreed it was above par Chinese food. Which is even harder to find in a buffet style location. I especially enjoyed the teriyaki chicken on a stick, shrimp with mixed veg, Chinese Donuts, pork spare ribs, pepper shrimp. Because this was fathers day, they had lobster veg with a garlic sauce (served by an old man at the buffet who at one point actually spilled lobster sauce on my pants but oh well, we all make mistakes) Not sure if this was special or not but they had snow crab legs. My personal opinion... people were almost fighting to get to the crab legs... listen - they were not that good of quality and people were fighting while waiting in line. If you want snow crab legs, go to Acme when they have them on sale and spare yourself the terrible experience of overweight idiots fighting over crab legs one small tray at a time. If you go to Ruby's for the Chinese food, you will not be disappointed. However, try not to make eye contact with some of the vultures that apparently have never eaten before yet retain a weight that would make a manatee blush. Fair price - only thing holding them back is there are too many tables for a buffet that small. Then you take into account the average girth of a customer, times the number of chairs relative to the size of the buffet... you have a recipe for disaster. I will admit I was a little skeptical of Ruby's. But at $12.99 for a seafood buffet, I think that's understandable. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I went with a large party on a Saturday night and we were seated right away. They had a nice variety to choose from- your standard chinese dishes, salads, sushi, mussels/clams/shrimp/fish, pizza(?), and even a carving station. There was also a little silver tin designated for snow crabs, but apparently I was not fast enough to snag any. I probably would have given an additional star if they had refilled this more often. For dessert you could choose from fresh fruit, cookies, cakes, and soft-serve. Ruby's is defiantly more about quantity than quality, but I did leave satisfied. And they were able to give us separate checks i.e swipe 10 different credit cards (I know, very annoying on our part, but they were nice about it). If you're starving & ready to eat everything in sight -- Ruby Buffet isn't a bad choice. You aren't getting 5 star food but you'll definitely be getting decent food, a wide selection, & cheap prices. My boyfriend and I are buffet lovers and Ruby Buffet is one of the BEST we've been to. The restaurant is clean, the food is fresh and the staff is very nice. The food is not only fresh, but the selection is great! They have a great selection of sushi and sashimi that is always fresh and delicious. The salad bar has a great choice of cold salads and fruit. There are chicken options, beef options and a variety of seafood choices. The food is always fresh, they are constantly the buffet area and cleaning and replenishing the dishes. Whenever my hubby and I can't decide where to eat, we hit Ruby Buffet for a fuss-free, eat whatever we want meal! The price is average, the service is efficient and the food is fresh- what more can you ask for in a buffet? My favorites include the crab salad (if you've ever been in a military mess hall- it's just like that!), chicken teriyaki on a stick, vermicelli & veggies, all the fresh fruit you can imagine, fresh sushi (although I would like some labels- but I doubt it's possible since it's a rotating selection), Chinese donuts that are ridiculously soft and light (weight-wise) and delicious soft serve (vanilla, chocolate, & swirl :). Definitely one of the better buffets I've been to, especially considering the very reasonable cost. There is a very diverse array of food to choose from. Some highlights include traditional fare like General Tso's chicken, fried rice, and dumplings to slightly more exotic fare like crispy duck and frog legs (which, oddly enough, really do taste a lot like chicken). Now for the focus of so many reviews: the sushi. The sushi was nothing to write home about, although I do think the mere presence of sushi at a buffet is impressive, and it definitely wasn't bad. There were a few different options to choose from, and it held together well. The desserts were meh, pretty typical buffet desserts. The crab salad, on the other hand, was amazing. I was also a big fan of the duck, which was pretty greasy, but if we're all being honest here no one is going to a Chinese buffet with their health and fitness goals in mind. One more thing to note: when you go back for more food, don't leave your fork on your plate. They will take it away, and I didn't see anywhere to procure another. Luckily, I was warned about this at the beginning by a friend with experience, so now I'm passing that warning on to you. I've been going to Ruby Buffet with my roommate for the past two years of our college careers. We love it! It's difficult to find a chinese buffet with sushi, seafood (crawfish, snow crabs, shrimp, dungenous crab) and all the variety for $16. The food isn't five-star restaurant quality, but it's definitely above average buffet food for an excellent price. The snow crabs can be really good sometimes and really crappy other times, you might want to ask when they get their shipment in to know when they are the most fresh, that is if the staff can speak beyond conversational English. I've never not gotten snow crabs because the line is too long (although I'm pretty aggressive with the seafood). The assorted veggies are a plus and the fruits are always pretty fresh. The restaurant is clean and the buffet is well-maintained and the staff is a friendly and polite bunch. I've never had any problems. If you want great sushi or great seafood, it's better to go to a specialty restaurant, but if you're just looking for decent chinese food and a place to stuff your face, look no further. read more

We went here as a large group for a surprise party for a family member. We were charged an extra $5/person for a "private room" for two hours, which essentially amounted to $220 for the use of the room and we paid an additional $2/person for the tip. So, I'm writing this from the perspective of paying $20 for a $12.95 buffet. The selection was lacking, to say the least. It's a huge dining room but a relatively small buffet. I literally walked around in circles looking for something to eat. I had a miniature bowl of "seafood" soup, which was essentially egg drop soup with seafood flavoring and a bit of imitation seafood. I had the French salad which was enjoyable. I bypassed the beets because they looked almost gray, and the strawberries had been tossed with a red glaze, so I avoided them as well. In general, the cold food was unimpressive. I took the vegetable lo mein and added the peppers & onions from the pepper steak, and the spinach to the plain noodles to produce a "vegetable" lo mein. And I had one serving of the "crispy" duck, which had the faint taste of 5-spice so it was almost good. My husband, who is less particular than me thought the stuffed crab shell and the shrimp with crab meat were inedible. He said the sushi at Whole Foods is substantially better than this, I didn't bother to try it. There were mixed reviews from the rest of the group; some people enjoyed it and have been repeat customers, others thought there wasn't enough selection, and others thought the food was just OK, many left hungry. The complaints about the texture of the meat led me to believe it was seitan rather than chicken with broccoli or pepper steak. The highlight of the buffet was the soft serve ice cream which was surprisingly creamy and delicious. The best part of the evening was being with family, so I suppose my $80 was well spent, but needless to say, I will not return to Ruby's. read more

I have been curious about Ruby's Buffet for years but was always a little hesitant to try it. I feel like "sushi" and "all-you-can-eat buffet" should not exist in the same sentence. I usually prefer quality over quantity and have rarely had a really good buffet experience. None the less, one weekend after a long run, my husband and I decided that we had earned ourselves a buffet lunch and decided to give it a go. The restaurant was absolutely packed inside and we were led to a table in one of the back rooms. Ruby's consists of several buffet stations: a salad bar, three or four hot foot stations, a sushi station, and a dessert station. I started with a salad that was mediocre and consisted of some wilted romaine lettuce and some mayonnaise based seafood salad that I eyed suspiciously before serving. They had oysters out and against my better judgment I took one. They were kind of gray and slimy, and didn't look fresh at all. The hot food was a little bit better, but not great. I had some chicken teriyaki, sweet and sour chicken, a red bean dumpling, and a couple of other things that were just OK. I wanted to try the snow crab legs, but there was a long line of people waiting just for them and every time the servers brought out a new batch, people descended upon them like eagles and within 30 seconds flat they were gone. Needless to say, I never got to try them. The sushi was OK. I just felt uncomfortable eating it because seeing it sitting out there for who knows how long made me question the freshness and I couldn't enjoy the experience. Oh, and the soy sauce was so salty it was almost inedible. The desserts weren't that exciting. They had some kind of banana pudding and some almond cookies, and the soft serve ice cream which was probably the best part of the whole experience. I have been to this location several times before and never really had any true issues with the customer service. That is, until the other night. I came for dinner seeking a quick meal to feed some picky eating kids. In total it was 2 adults and 4 children ages 2,5,6, and 10. The signage clearly states the prices. It lists adults $14.99, kids 5-10 $7.99. The cashier rings me up and the charges did not seem correct, I asked for a break down of the charges. She tells me 3 adults and 3 kids. I explained, I have 4 kids and they are all 10 or under. She became frustrated with me and began questioning the birthdate of the 10 year old. I felt it was inappropriate to ask that question. Do you need a birth certificate to dine her? Needless to say due the disrespect and poor customer service, we decided to dine elsewhere. My wife and I made a drive to this buffet last night really looking forward to a great dinner with our family. We had just taken these children to the circus and they were terribly hungry and feeling restless, ready to have dinner. Our group consisted of my wife and I, a two year old, a six year old, two eight year olds, and a ten year old. I mentioned their ages because the employee didn't accept or believe that our ten year old was actually ten. For some reason we had to prove that our growing ten year old as indeed ten years old and that we weren't trying to pull anything over this lady. As a quiz, she asked us what year she was born, hoping to catch us in some kind of lie. Upset by the question, we still answered honestly and was still turned down by her disbelief. Not only did we face her attempt to charge us an adult price for a ten year old, but she wanted us to pay for our 2 year old as well as if he was at least five. Fed up with this poor customer service, we chose to leave and not give them our business. Very disappointing when in the past I haven't had any problems referring my family and friends to this business. Out of the buffets in the city I've been too, this is probably my favorite. Been there for lunch and dinner and the hot food is always hot and salad bar items are pretty fresh. Some of my favorites are the seafood pasta salad (it is spicy) and fried shrimp. I ignore all of the desert options and head to the soft serve and fruits. I personally don't go to buffets for "authentic" food but the quality is pretty consistent and yummy. I did notice some of the menu items rotating but it's all good. As much as I love sushi, I always steer away from sushi at buffets, no matter how good. For the people who are "uncomfortable with the clientele," it's deep in South Philly, pajamas and sweats are the norm. It's a buffet so you're dressed to expand, not impress. read more

How excited we all were to be going to a Chinese buffet on the 4th of July. We felt like gorging ourselves for 12 dollars was a good way to spend our money and our time. We were quite mistaken. The food itself was very very very average, probably worth 8 or 9 dollars. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was clean and welcoming. At this point you might be asking, "Well, why 2 stars?" Honestly, it was probably a 4 star experience until we got the bill. 51 dollars for 3 buffet meals and 3 waters. 51 dollars?!? Yes. 51 dollars. Due to the managements unwavering sense of patriotism and clear understanding of the American dream they RAISED the prices by 4 dollars a person on a national holiday celebrating our spirit, freedom, and independence. Such good citizens. So we paid the bill and as we were walking out we noticed the little sign advertising the price change. 16 dollars for adults, 8 for kids.Sitting erect and proud in the right hand corner of the sign was a clear explanation of the atrocity we had just experienced; a Puerto Rican flag instead of an American flag. I usually come here when I'm done at the movie theater. The food is always the same. I liked the fried shrimp, chicken and broccoli and the crawfish. I liked having the logans for dessert. Not all Asian buffets have that. The pan fried dumplings, fried sushi, and egg rolls aren't fresh, but that's typical of Asian buffets. The food was great compared to other buffets. The service was terrible. The waitress gave us our bill, and actually stood behind the table and waited for us to pay! She only left when she saw we weren't ready. As soon as my friend started to pay she stood behind us and waited again! When my friend asked for change, she got mad and angrily told him the tip wasn't included in the bill! Then waited for him to hand her the tip! The tip isn't mandatory. If it was up to me she wouldn't have gotten anything. Next time I if I come back I'm paying at the front.
