Unsworth's Yard - prosecco in the sun (2013)

Personally, I don't think it gets much better than Unsworth's Yard in the sunshine…read more A recent discovery, it's the perfect place to sit back and relax after wandering around the village of Cartmel and pressing your nose up to the door of L'Enclume. Around the communal courtyard, there's a micro-brewery, cheese/pastry/deli shop, and wine and spirit vendor. There are only a few tables, so you might have to be all eyes and ready to swoop, but it's worth it. You can take a look at the micro-brewery and chat with one of the brewer's, who's more than happy to give samples before you purchase a pint. There are brewery tours available to those who wish to learn more. Something great to note? To enter the church, you have to walk directly next to the brewery. Good going, town planning! The cheese shop gives off a powerful smell at first - it should probably come with a warning for pregnant ladies and those with weak hearts - but I promise you get used to it. The man working that day was completely charming and wanting to help everyone and anyone, giving out samples of every cheese they sell. They were running low on breads etc when we visited as everything is baked locally and when it's gone, it's gone! I had a little bottle of prosecco, which went down very nicely, especially when sampling some of the cheddar we purchased. Plenty of people had their purchases spread about them, and it's a great place to go if you can't agree on what to drink or nibble on; just go to one of the shops and then meet in the courtyard.

This is such a lovely wine bar. When it comes to wine I don't pretend to know my stuff, I just…read moreopenly admit 'I know nothing about wine!' I do like wine, and it always has to be red, preferably a fruity one, but that's as far as it goes for me.. Names of wines? Nope. Flavours of wines? Nada. So I asked the bartender for a middle of the road, fruity, red. He recommended the Le Selezioni Cutaja, Nero d'Avola (confused face) and he looked like he knew his stuff, so with total faith in him that's what I went for. It was lovely. The bar itself is small but looks cosy. It wasn't particularly busy for a Tuesday evening but there was still a very pleasant atmosphere as I met some other Yelpers for pre-dinner drinks. As time goes on I can imagine this is the type of place I would like to sit for a few hours, order a meat and cheese board and try some different wines. This may have to involve building up my tolerance a little though, as usually 2 large glasses of red and I'm sloshed.

OH APERITIVI YOU SAY…read more Following my year in Bologna when I belatedly discovered Italian aperitivi culture (i.e. eating tiny free pieces of food along with your prosecco, negroni etc) I always get verrrry excited when I see it in the UK. Veeno apparently has a whole buffet on Wednesday, which I am excited to try. Meanwhile what we got was great - cheese and ham with excellent red wine (I got the "classic" which I really enjoyed). Will definitely be back here for drinks, it's a great stop off before, for example, Red's or Splendid Kitchen.

I just really appreciate the fact that it exists! It sells everything you need to brew your own beer, wine, and spirits - they have shelves full of tiny intriguing bottles filled with essences of an array of different spirits. They also sell bits and bobs for coffee, tea and herbal drink connoisseurs and equipment for making Kombucha (a 'health drink' my mum makes that involves fermenting tea, producing a 'culture' full of yeast that resembles an alien out of a naff horror film which she calls 'the mother'...creepy or what!?). It is quite a small shop but is packed full of mysterious bottles and equipment and the staff are helpful and highly knowledgeable. If you're into making your own booze (or creepy aliens) or fancy taking up the hobby, Abbey Beer and Wine Making Supplies will sort you out!

If you are into making your own beer, wine or spirits, then I suggest that Abbey is probably the place for you, and not just because it's the only shop of its type I've ever seen in Leeds. They have all manner of weird and wonderful Willy Wonka style contraptions, and the staff are clearly very passionate about what they offer - they'll probably even tell you how to make alcohol that doesn't blind anyone who drinks it. What more can you ask for?

I was on the verge of walking out when the waiter revealed that this was a joke! Ho ho ho, what japes. No harm no foul I guess, but I have no sense of humour when I'm hungry and also have an astounding ability to take *everyone* at face value no matter what they say to me. Service followed in a similar vein all evening, walking a tightrope between irritating and endearing. If you ever feel like you have no mates, come here because they're all your bezzers. It's a good job the food was good - really good, in fact. You know sometimes when you're eating you get a perfect mouthful? A brilliant combination of flavours and textures all in one bite. This is what happened when I wrapped silky hummus and salty halloumi in a piece of garlic butter lathered lavash, with a black olive crammed in for good measure. Oh wow. This is possibly all I want to eat for the rest of my life. I felt slightly uninspired by a lot of the main course options, but my choice of pide (Turkish pizza) with spicy sausage was a solid one. In a lot of ways, much better than regular pizza - the lavash base is so soft and wonderfully chewy at the same time. Instead of desserts we opted for cocktails. My friend chose one from the menu with rosewater and cucumber and I let the chirpy waiter 'put something together for me'. Lord knows what that was but it had strawberries in it and was very nice. Altogether the bill came to around £60, making it a slightly pricier option but totally worth it. I imagine it'd be a great place for a party, or to take your family.
