I do like wine, and it always has to be red, preferably a fruity one, but that's as far as it goes for me.. Names of wines? Nope. Flavours of wines? Nada. So I asked the bartender for a middle of the road, fruity, red. He recommended the Le Selezioni Cutaja, Nero d'Avola (confused face) and he looked like he knew his stuff, so with total faith in him that's what I went for. It was lovely. The bar itself is small but looks cosy. It wasn't particularly busy for a Tuesday evening but there was still a very pleasant atmosphere as I met some other Yelpers for pre-dinner drinks. As time goes on I can imagine this is the type of place I would like to sit for a few hours, order a meat and cheese board and try some different wines. This may have to involve building up my tolerance a little though, as usually 2 large glasses of red and I'm sloshed.

OH APERITIVI YOU SAY…read more Following my year in Bologna when I belatedly discovered Italian aperitivi culture (i.e. eating tiny free pieces of food along with your prosecco, negroni etc) I always get verrrry excited when I see it in the UK. Veeno apparently has a whole buffet on Wednesday, which I am excited to try. Meanwhile what we got was great - cheese and ham with excellent red wine (I got the "classic" which I really enjoyed). Will definitely be back here for drinks, it's a great stop off before, for example, Red's or Splendid Kitchen.

Spirited Wines obviously has a large selection of wines (which you can also drink in the bar…read moreupstairs) and have developed a strong whisky selection too, accompanied by tastings. Unsurprisingly, it's more expensive in here than online (a £110 bottle of whisky is £30 less online) but we probably would never have found out about it had we not gone in. There's a small bottled beer selection which has a large proportion of gluten free beers (better than M&S, Harvey Nichols or hangingditch). Everytime I have gone in I have found the staff to be really nice and helpful and it's nearly always the same people who I suspect are also the owners/managers.

The Wine Shop sells a fantastic range of alcoholic drinks from quite exclusive wines and lesser…read moreknown beers to standard lagers and alcopops. They have a good selection of mixers available too, however these are slightly pricey when compared with the shop opposite, so, perhaps stock up on your lemo beforehand. There used to be a very knowledgeable cashier in the Wine Shop, in fact I htink he may have owned it, he knew the seasons wines, could recommend appropriate drinks for your occassion and sold you his delights graciously, sadly, it seems he has been replaced by a rather glum young lad who cares little for fine wines, but, once you've cracked open whatever you've bought, I'm sure you'll forget all about him. In the interest of Yelp review accuracy, I looked this fact up on the internet and there seems to be some dispute as to the exact origin to this most unctuous of steamed British comfort food puddings. I shall therefore call Cartmel one of the possible homes of sticky toffee pudding. While dining at L'Enclume, we asked the staff there where the best place to get the most authentic sticky toffee pudding and they pointed us in the direction of the Cartmel Village Shop. Now, I'm not sure what sort of village shop you're lucky enough to have in your vicinity but let me say that this place is hiding its light under a bushel by calling itself a village shop. In London, they would call themselves a deli and charge an arm and a leg for their goods. The shelves are really stocked with top class produce and brands. However, we had come for the award winning sticky toffee pudding. In perusing their fridge, we spotted variations - sticky ginger pudding and sticky banana pudding. So we left with a handful of different varieties to try. All in the name of Yelp research obviously! The packaging says that this village shop is the home of sticky toffee pudding where they used to be made in the kitchen at the back of the shop. The kitchen has since moved but the shop remains. I shall be reporting back shortly about the pudding itself but if you're a foodie visiting Cartmel, this treasure trove is a must.
