Yesterday there was a local marathon- yes!- great runners charged past into the local town of Ambleside. Hikers and dog lovers are here too. We did the curry bowl to share (vegetarian and VERY tasty - kind of wish I could get the recipe), scampi, fries, and tartare sauce (those fries are to die for!) and the lamb kofta, hummus, flatbread, and mint yoghurt (great for sharing and noshing). There's plenty of parking on the side of the inn. The inside is decorated beautifully (very insta-worthy), so maybe consider renting out for an event. And yes, you can bring your dog to dinner/drinks.

The pub itself isn't as big as it seems from outside, with much of the pub area divided into single-spaced, window-seated tables. On the plus side, that means it won't get too noisy when the placed is packed. The real ale selection is certainly adequate [I've seen better, and much worse, the latter more often], the staff generally nice and helpful, and the real ales being kept fresh. They have a great selection of real ales to sample, and even offer special discounts for CAMRA members. Tthe food menu is a definite cut above the average and is easily comparable with the best restaurants in town. There's a cool, homely, welcoming ambience about the place that lifts your spirits as soon as you walk in the door. A perfect place to spend a relaxing couple of hours away from the bustle of city life.

The butter here is delicate and sweet, but it's topped with salt that cuts the sweetness. The bread was divine, and a lot of care and attention had gone into baking them. We were given complementary amuse-buche, which was a breaded + fried salmon and lobster bite with aioli. Delicious and plated on an adorable shell. Next we ordered the roast pie and duck liver. Hands down, the duck liver was the best thing I tried during the meal. Glorious mix when combining the liver and the jam it was topped with. The pie was a bit unconventional, and perfect that way. Small, rich, and great pastry. For our mains, we ordered the smoked hare and the pork. The hare was perfectly portioned and had a fun combination with apple and other sauces. The pork was very large, but it won a recent UK pub dish award and it was likely one of the most flavourful pork loin dishes I've had, as they're a bit difficult since the pork takes time to capture flavour. The menu is short with just a few options for each course but the food is some of the best I've eaten. We had the lamb and duck mains and these were really excellent. Presented with such skill and the flavours were superb. I'm a huge dessert person (you may see a theme in my reviews if you read more than one!) and had chosen this restaurant based on another sugar addict's recommendation. I was not disappointed, they were gorgeous and I wanted to order them all! In the end we made do with just one each.
