We called this shop ahead of time and were given a quote for the transmission work our truck…read moreneeded. Based on that quote, we decided to move forward and dropped the truck off. After they had the truck, however, the price increased by somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 (more than a 10% increase!), even though the scope of the work had not changed. We were not comfortable with the unexpected increase, so we declined the work and told them we would come pick up our truck. Because I had a bad feeling about the situation after the price increase, I started doing some research into the company. I was surprised to find out that the shop, which has been around since the 1980s and has a very good reputation in the area, was acquired by someone else last year. The original owner is no longer the owner. I had heard many good things from people who had used this shop when it was still under the original ownership, which is a big part of why we felt comfortable taking our truck there in the first place. We were then charged an $185 diagnostic fee. While we understand that shops may charge diagnostic fees, given that we had already been quoted a price for the work and the reason we declined the repair was the unexpected price increase, we felt that fee should have been waived. What makes this experience especially frustrating is how difficult it is to find a mechanic you genuinely feel you can trust. When you take your vehicle somewhere, you shouldn't have to wonder whether the price you're being quoted is actually the price you're going to pay, or whether additional charges are going to appear once they have your vehicle. In our case, the experience felt less like an honest change in circumstances and more like a bait-and-switch, and that completely changed our perception of the business. If you still decide to bring your vehicle here, I would strongly suggest getting the complete price and scope of work in writing before leaving your vehicle, and confirming any diagnostic fees upfront. Trust is incredibly important when choosing a mechanic, and unfortunately, we left this experience feeling like ours had been misplaced.

If I could give zero stars, I would!!!!! This is definitely…read moreNOT a place I would recommend. The office person Glen will tell you whatever you want to hear. I was given a price of roughly 2500.00 to rebuild the transmission and would take around 3 to 4 weeks to be completed and had to pay 1200.00 up front to even start on the work. After 3 weeks, I called to see how much longer, I was told Glen was out of the office and would have to call me back, but he never did. Sometimes, there was no answer at all during regular business hours. Drove to the shop during regular business hours, and they were closed. No body around what so ever. When I was able to talk to Glen, I was told "we're waiting on the part" called again and was told "yeah your part came in, but your car was pushed out of the garage because it was taking too long for the part to come in and your car was put at the end of the line and they were working on other cars. They damaged parts on the car and then charged me to fix it. I had a manufacturer recall part, and when I dropped the car off, i asked if they could reach out to GM on the replacement, I was told they wouldn't do that. I would have to take it to a GM dealership to have that work done. Well low and behold, they replaced it and charged me 296.00. I said that it was a recall item, and you told me you wouldn't touch it. Glen's response was "well I had to replace it to get the job done correctly." When all was said and done, it was close to 6000.00 and 6 months later. So on top of 3500.00 more for the repair, I had to find rides, borrow cars, and even had to rent a car and had to pay for it out of my own pocket. SO UNLESS YOU DON'T MIND PAYING OVER "DOUBLE" THE QUOTE GIVEN OR IF YOU REALLY DON'T NEED A CAR TO DRIVE, THEM BE MY GUEST AND YOU CAN GIVE THEM A CHANCE. "MAYBE" YOU'LL HAVE BETTER LUCK THAN I DID!!!!!!!

Once he has your vehicle, communication is almost nonexistent, answers are few and far between, and the estimated price becomes much more. He had my vehicle for almost SEVEN months. He committed to things he did not deliver. When I received the vehicle back, the carpet in the cab was dirty, i found i had not been informed of parts replaced beforehand, and some of the original parts replaced had been damaged. I have asked more once for Glenn to fulfill what he had committed to and he has yet to live up to his end. This shop is closed, but he is now located at the Austin Transmission in Mehlville. Buyer beware. If you ask me, I would suggest using a more highly rated shop. If you pick this shop, Ron [the manager] seems to be the more reliable contact.

I and my parents have been coming here for 15+ years, never a complaint. I recommend them to anyone that I can. Pat (head mechanic) is a saint. He's VERY knowledgeable and very friendly. Since discovering Arvin Auto, I've made it a point to only get work on my cars done here. I may go other places for preliminary diagnostics or emergency, but I always come here for the work. They're extremely efficient in getting your car in and out; whether last minute or with an appointment. They've always been very honest: Ex being I'd go somewhere else and get a list of items that "needed" fixing. Then come to Arvin, and they'd say No you don't need that, it was just this XYZ simple fix, which would end up being much cheaper. All when they could've easily gone with the more expensive work, as I'd be none the wiser. Arvin often beats competitor's prices.
