There's nothing wrong with wanting the best of the best. We're all busy and we DO deserve the best, but let's face it. People in NYC are pretentious sons of bitches. I'll call a spade a spade. I've heard many a SoHo loft dweller denigrate new restaurants because the chef isn't well known or the beef isn't made by someone with a name who sounds like the actor that played Mr. Miyagi. Royale doesn't have Pat LaFreida beef. What they do have are delicious fucking hamburgers. The beef is juicy. The buns are delicious. The fries taste hand cut and homemade. The onion rings are beer battered in house. However my superlatives really have to go to two things. The caramelized fucking onions. These guys don't just throw some onions in a pan and let them get slightly burned and browned and call them caramelized. Hell no, son. They do their onions right. They've been slow cooked down to a sweet and jammy mess that pairs perfectly with their gruyere cheese. yes they have. I also want to give a shout out to their massive outdoor space which is oh so perfect for hanging out in when the weather is good. They've also got some solid drink specials. I actually kind of love this place and just realized. I discovered it two years ago looking for a place to host my birthday party. They have a great outdoor seating that is quiet and comforting!! The burgers here are dope as fuck. The onion rings are BOMB. But almost as importantly the service is great. The waiters are always chill and nice. Sorry, I got excited when when I saw that my receipt read "Royale with Cheese". So after a long day of riding I needed some fat and carbs. I had never been to Royale, but have walked by and it's been on my list of places to try. I phoned up to place my order the woman on the phone was very friendly. She said it would be about ten minutes. I wandered over to Royale and sat down at the bar. The place was mostly empty. There was a table of marathon runners, still dressed in their running gear, unwinding with beer and burgers. A voluptuous barmaid with really great looking glasses approached me. She told me that my burger would soon be ready. She asked what kind of beer I normally drink, and I told her Stella. She set a small glass with crisp Stella in front of me on the house. My burger took a few more minutes and I was on my way back home. I quickly unpacked my meal and put it on a plate and sat down to eat. The Fries were very good, but a little too salty. The burger was very good, but after having Shack Shack yesterday it paled in comparison. This thing is massive, greasy patty, piled high with bacon and oozing cheese...it hurt me not to finish it. Fortunately the pain was less than if I'd actually tried to stuff it all in. The fries were alright, nothing amazing. The onion rings though, mm mm good. Pair that burger with $2 beers during happy hour (4-8pm) and a kick ass outdoor patio and it's really a no-brainer where I'll be spending my summer afternoons. You probably wouldn't appreciate how Royale is totally nice but not fancy at all, how they have delicious local brew Pork Slap in a can for $3, and how this is the best damn burger there is for under $1000 (not to mention that it's under $10). When you say "medium-rare" they know you really mean "medium-RARE", and your burger comes out perfectly pink and juicy. The toasted brioche bun is simply top-notch, and the pickles ain't no Vlassic slices; these are real pickles. Royale is hipster-free, has a 2-for-1 happy hour, and shows baseball on their slightly too-small TVs. A great burger for under $10 in NYC? Yes.....head to Royale. A regular burger runs $6.50 and the Bacon Royale is $8.50 and It. Is. Spectacular. My first reaction was "there's too much bacon". I mean on a burger this price you expect 2, maybe 3 little strips of bacon and hope they are not burnt to a crisp or rubbery. 4 to 5 perfectly cooked, meaty bacon strips? A very pleasant surprise. Another wonderful surprise was finding the medium-rare burger I ordered was cooked ........ med-rare !! Yes, I prefer my meat a little pink **, thanks for listening. None of the above would matter if the burger wasn't good but I guess you've figured out by now that I loved it. All the usual adjectives, such as mouth watering and flavorful apply but also toss in orgasmic and awe inspiring. Who eats a damn salad at Royale!? Me. And, for that moment I was a huge schmuck. The burgers looked/smelled disastrously good. Bacon. Multiple cheese offerings. Onion rings. Improved french fries.The delighted looks on my pals' faces were enough to make me put on the salad blinders and power through without thinking too much. JUST EAT THE SALAD, COLLEEN. Even though everyone else is having somuchfun with the burgers, just relish in this awesome little bucket of leaves. Sigh. Detoxing sucks. A burger and an Allagash!? My world. How did this become HOT on YELP? I don't mean to diss, but I was really excited to try a place that had such high starred reviews! Luckily I had dinner before coming here to try the burgers for a late night snack. It really was not that late, more like 10pm? My friend and I were still a little full from dinner, so we decided to get one to split, take out. I know people are probably, going to rip me for this, but I made it home in 10 minutes, and Ive had burgers sit around longer and taste WAY better. ESP from a DINER. My Royale with cheddar cheese on a sesame bun tasted similar to Burger King, but without all the grease. Basically a tasteless burger with no memorable ingredients. The bartender that I ordered from was not friendly or personable at all. She just took my order, couldn't make any suggestions when I asked, and just dropped the check and continued staring off into space. This morning, as I was walking to my office from the subway station, all I could think about was Royale's grilled cheese and tomato. I don't eat meat, so whilst my friends were happily ordering their burgers, I had to choose between a grilled cheese and a veggie burger. I now regret not getting the veggie burger because the grilled cheese, in all its gooey delight, is all I can think about. I'm not sure if my second visit will live up to the greatness that my first visit has ingrained in my mind-- perhaps it was how we were able to escape from the hot, hot sun one Sunday afternoon into the back patio where it was about 15 degrees cooler than the outside world, or if we were just glad that there was somewhere open to feed our hungover stomachs some greasy goodness, but grilled cheese, I miss you. Best burger in the city. Period. I've been going to Royale since it opened and the quality has always been top notch. The burgers are always just the right size and cooked perfectly. Onion rings are also great and not overly battered. Good beer selection--cheap cans of Pork Slap Pale Ale. Awesome backyard for the summertime. How can it get better? Actually, I'll give one suggestion--they should turn down the damn music a notch or two so if you eat indoors you can actually hear the person sitting next to you. But you know something, even though they won't turn it down, I'll still give them 5-stars and go back and eat with a big smile on my face. Their burgers really are just that good! read more

I pulled off a semi-accidental dine & dash at Royale last night. Generally speaking, I pay for the food I eat. But this is how it went down on my first (possibly last?) visit to Royale. Meet my friend Toby at the bar. Order beers, which we pay for. So far so good. Head into the back patio. Try in vain for 20 minutes to get the attention of a waitress, who keeps coming back into the garden, looking at us, and ignoring my meaningful eye contact. Finally, I go inside, track her down, and place my order. Toby and I share a cheeseburger & fries. The cheeseburger is decent but not orgasmic or even exceptional. It's a pretty flat burger (large though), which may be why it had no pinkness inside, even though we ordered it medium rare. Also the bun is not delicious and kinda stale. We play the same game where we try to get our waitress's attention to ask for the check. She is way better at this game then we are. Over the course of the next 25 minutes, we ask two other servers (one of whom is dressed just like BamBam from the Flinstones) for our check. no dice. By this time we're quite late to meet our friends, and it is then that the modified dine&dash enters my mind. We slowly move through the patio and the bar, making eye contact with several staff, sort of hoping that they'll give us our check so we can pay. But this doesn't happen and we end up on the street, feeling that mixture of exhilaration and guilt that accompanies illegal behavior. Not that I would know. In retrospect I realize I could have left $10 even though I'm not sure how much our burger & fries came to. I'm not proud of my criminal act. If any Royale staff are reading this (hello BamBam!) I would be happy to pay up if I ever come back. But with such crappy service and burgers that have no legitimate claim to be best in the city, I'm not sure that I will. read more

Granola muchin', wheat juice drinkin', health nuts, beware. In a city full of Equinox's, NYSC's, and diet this and that, Royale spits in the face of all conventional wisdom. At Royale, health food is getting a Bud Light instead of a Stella, and eating your gigantic basket of fries ($3) with ketchup instead of mayo. Healthy sized burgers, massive starchy sides, and not a green veg in sight, this place isn't diet food, but it's good for a cheap and filling meal. The ambiance and service could use some work, but for a quick, cheap fill-up for around $12, you can't go wrong. read more

I think one of the non-males got what's called a "sal-uhd." They pointed it out on the one-page menu, but I couldn't see it. The fatback-stacked Royale Bacon Burger ($9) I kept close to face hole blocked my line of sight. Housemade chips and onion dip could use a bit of chutzpah, but the thin and crispy fries hit the spotzpah. Somebody stopzpah me, it's taking controlzpah! Now look, I'm sure this place has seen more than its fair share of wanna-be Vincent Vegas and Jules Winnfields, but really, how can you not order the "Royale with Cheese"? And the verdict? WOW, I think Royale just beat shake shack. I'm freaking out about the words I just wrote, but I haven't had a better burger in the city. It was cooked perfectly, wasn't sitting in a pool of oil, the brioche bun (cussing incredible) wasn't soggy, and the fries were crunchy. The onion rings were battered lightly, and cut very thin. "Booger King, home of the big one." This place serves SOLID* burgers. It's always difficult to decide where/what you want to eat when you're hanging with a group of friends. Add numerous complimentary and paid drinks to the mix and you're pretty much screwed up the butt, no homo. A brief recap of how we decided: "Where are we eating?" "I don't know, what do you want?" "I don't know, what do you feel like?" "Hm, not sure. Ask them." (points to other friends) "Hey, what do you guys want to eat? Burgers?" "YEA! I've been wanting burgers for so long!" "Okay, cool!" 15 minutes later... "So, where are we eating again?" "I don't know, ask them." (points to other friends) Somehow, emphasis on how, after we finally deliberated on the restaurant, we managed to get ourselves to Royale. The seating outside is spacious and pairs well with warmer weather although they do have heat lamps. I get cold easily. They even had a generously sized flat screen TV for us to watch the World Series, but who was watching that anyways? I ordered the Royale with Cheese, medium rare. The burger came out with bacon and I said something to the server without thinking (doh!) and he took it back (double doh!). I got the "why did you open your mouth when you could have gotten free bacon" stare from one of my friends. The burger actually came out more medium (very faint pink) but it was still really juicy and tasted extremely fresh. I wouldn't be surprised if they grind their meat per order. One of my friends sitting next to me ordered the Bacon Royale and hers came out medium rare when she ordered it medium, so there was a slight mix up. We shrugged it off and continued to eat. For around $8 a burger, Royale definitely sets itself apart from the rest. Inexpensive, quality food with great taste. You could come here everyday to grab a really ridiculously tasty burger but that would lead to adverse affects to your health. I would still recommend it. On a map, it looks like a hike over to Avenue C. Actually, it just plain IS a hike over to Avenue C. But if you're a burger fan, it's worth the trip. I hate to talk trash about some other burgers that I enjoy in New York, but the Royale with Cheese tops Shake Shack, Corner Bistro, and BLT Burger. And I don't make that claim lightly. The key is the fresh vegetables, the heavenly bread, and the ground sirloin. There's something about that combination that just makes it rise above the rest. It's the unsung hero of the New York City Burger War of the Mid-Aughts. Beyond the burger, the space itself is clean and comfortable, especially for a bar you'd expect to find on Avenue C. There's an outdoor area that even includes a rock garden with two Adirondack chairs out back. The draft beers are a little pricey, but for $3, you can get a damn tasty can of Heinnieweisse (a hefeweizen) or Pork Slap Ale (a pale ale) from Butternuts Brewery, a brewery deep in the heart of Upstate New York. Royale is worth the hike. Plus, walking to Avenue C might burn a few calories to make room for the burger. read more

How, I love you, Royale. I really, really do and I tell all my friends about you. Your burgers are plump and juicy and that sesame brioche bun makes me all kinds of happy. Your pickles could be a bit less bland and soggy though, but that's just a small note in a symphony of awesome. It's wonderful splitting a side of your fries or onion rings with my friends so I don't feel like such a fat kid. Your backyard is rad. Man oh man was this underwhelming. I was starving when I ate, so I thought that might color my perception. Nope. Why all the hype, people? Given the neighborhood, there are many other options, and most of them are better. Paul's, Mark, Veselka, hell, probably that shady place that rolls up steel shutter doors when it opens. I came here for a friend's birthday. Decor was nice and simple. I liked the outdoor patio in the back of the restaurant. Good thing people living in the apartments near the outdoor patio don't hang their clothes outside their windows. I wouldn't want someone's socks or underwear falling on me. I ordered a medium bacon royale with gruyere cheese. But it came out medium well. From first sight, I was disappointed because I thought it was going to be dry. BUT it was still very juicy surprisingly. The brioche burger bun had a nice bite. It complemented the patty very well. It's not your normal soft burger bun. I was going to order onion rings but my friends who got there earlier told me they were too greasy when they had it. Service was great from the waiter to the bar tender. One of the female bartenders really knows her whisky. Plus we had a nice conversation with her. She let us sample the difference between two whiskies. Royale makes a very good burger with one major fault: The Bun. The Bun is way too big for its britches. It stifles my enjoyment and my enjoyment does NOT like to be stifled. My favorite food writer/curmudgeon, Jeffrey Steingarten, just wrote his monthly Vogue piece on what makes a perfect burger. Apparently, the size of the burger bun should not exceed the width of two fingers and should ideally be thinner than that width. Most people have pain if they open up their jaw, repeatedly, wider than the two finger width. Go ahead: try it. I do like the outdoor patio style seating at Royale. The service is good and most efficient. The bacon that you can opt to add to your burger is perfectly cooked. Just smash the bun down before you eat your burger! read more

New bar/burger joint on Avenue C. The place looks nice inside, and has ample outdoor seating. I found that they charge a bit too much for their drinks, however. You shouldn't have to pay $6 for a Brooklyn Lager in this neighborhood. The burgers are very good though ,and actually cooked to your specifications. I can't remember the last time I ordered a burger medium rare and actually got it medium rare. The french fries are pretty good, but only about 5-6 large-cut steak fries for 3 bucks. I'm a big fan of Royale. It's a pretty no-frills bar/restaurant, but nicer than most dives in the city. The location itself is a little bit out of the way, so beware of sketchy people outside when it's late. I like how it's rarely ever crowded, and I can get a really good burger and a huge basket of fries for about $12.50. The waitstaff is very casual, yet attentive, and are usually very efficient with drinks and food. Anyways, the burger is fairly standard, but very tasty, and the ratio of meat to bread is perfect. I usually get the Royale with Cheese or if I'm feelin' frisky, the Bacon Royale. Really hits the spot with that cheesy, meaty goodness. The tomatoes, onions, pickles and lettuce seem a bit overkill, but if you remove some of the onions and tear the lettuce down, the texture is pretty good. The side of hand-cut fries comes in a pretty big basket, definitely worth the $4.50 or so they charge. Onion rings are decent too, albeit on the greasier side. Also, the ring is pretty much 95% fried dough and 5% onion, but then again, who eats onion rings for the onions anyways? Anyways, if you're feeling hungover, the onion rings actually will really hit the spot. Beer selection is decent, and they always try to have a good rotating seasonal on tap, just to mix it up. I'm not a huge fan of Pork Slap, but you can get cans of 'em for cheap if you make your way out here for happy hour. If you sit at the bar, there are a couple TVs for watching games, and the bartenders are always very attentive. During the summer, they do have a patio, so you can enjoy some food and beer outside. I didn't eat burgers until 6th grade. Well I also stayed away from pizza, pasta, all condiments (this one still lingers), and salad dressing for much of my childhood. Maybe that's why I don't think I could ever give a burger a five on Yelp. Even still, Royale may have had one of the best burgers I've had. Scrumptious brioche bun, tender meat (even though I always order my burgers medium), fresh veggies, crisp bacon... It was heads and shoulders above Corner Bistro. It's not quite comparable to Shake Shack IMO, which is delicious in another way. The onion rings were also some of the best I've EVER had. Wow. Service was great! Porkchop and I went one morning to find out it didn't open until 1PM, and the owner (or manager, or something) told us that they'd do their best to open up quickly to let us in. They have a nice outside area with heat lamps, which was cold the day we ate there, but I could see being very nice on a summer evening. They also have a bunch of beers, which we didn't try. By all accounts, I don't necessarily get floored when I come here but when I stop to think about all of Royale's assets, it really does a sufficient job of being a go-to eatery. Burgers! Are great. Simple and deliciously done. I wouldn't say it's the best burger I've ever had but it's definitely up there with Shake Shack's (same price range at about $8.50). Fries! Onion Rings! Chicken Fingers! All very good and crunchy and though not out of this world, they get the job done in convincing fashion. Beer! Selection is fair and prices seem to be decent (can't quite remember but maybe $6 for drafts?). Had some Guinessesses. Environment! Loud, fun and packed. Went in on a Friday night at around 930pm and we had to wait a little while to get a table for six but we were able to squeeze into a table for four, effectively touching hips with neighboring diners. Dimly lit like a bar usually is and there seems to be a vibrant outdoor eating area in their backyard for more of an open setting. Gotta try to hit that up next time. Was really excited to try their burgers after all the hype about it! Decided to order to go. Ordered a bacon royale and onion rings. You can choose between American, cheddar, and gruyère cheese for the burger. The burger comes with pickles, tomato, onions, lettuce and bacon. The burger was a pretty solid good burger, although I felt like the bacon was a little too hard. The beef was still juicy and tender and I ordered medium well. Next time I will try a different cheese. Unfortunately, couldn't rate this place a 5 star for burgers because of all the burgers I've had, shake shack still holds #1 for me and I'm forced to compare every single burger to it. There just hasn't been a burger spot I've tried that has beaten shake shack so far..just waiting for that day to come! As for the onion rings, oh em gee! Sooooo freaking good, a must get. This place succeeds in every way imaginable. The wooden decor and dim lighting create a very homey, relaxing atmosphere. The drinks are cheap enough and the happy hour specials are fantastic. The real star is the burger, though. I'm not a huge fan of 1" patties and was happy to find a more reasonable width here. The burgers are cooked perfectly to order (and to temperature) and are incredibly juicy with very good flavor. The last time I came here I was a bit nervous because it was a birthday party of like 15 people. The staff handled us wonderfully (especially considering we all trickled in a few at a time) and we were rarely wanting for a drink. The service was excellent and the wait time was minimal. The only negative is that I don't live closer to it. read more
