I loved the women's class with Lea -- there were four other female white belts like myself, and I very much enjoyed witnessing and being part of their camaraderie. Lea taught technique in a clear way, and explained the concepts behind the technique. I was the only female in the beginner's class, and the warm-ups were kind of rough especially after just finishing another class, but I managed to more or less get through it. :) The instructor taught some interesting technique that I will also try to incorporate into my game. The other men in the class were also friendly; I didn't get to roll with all of them, but the one that I did get to go with wasn't trying too hard to bite my head off. Overall, great vibes here. I'm a pretty small female, and there aren't many other girls at the school, but all of the guys have been really kind & welcoming. I've learned A LOT in a really short amount of time, and am stoked that they are starting to offer more classes in the mornings and on weekends. The reason I prefer KTI is because of its Gracie affiliation; they specialize in self defense for real life situations, not just rolling/competitions. They also shared they have liners in case I needed. It's always nice to find a gym that is welcoming and friendly the fact that everyone at Esaki was super technical and in control during rolls was just icing on the cake. They also welcomed my 12 year old son to train that day even though it was an adults class. I couldn't recommend this place enough. Do confirm the schedule ahead of time, we showed up at 0900 and it was no gi not gi, but regardless this place has top notch instruction with class act student, a true product of their teachers no doubt! They should lower membership fees for Kapa'a members since the showers in the locker room listed on their website isnt available and doesnt seem like its getting fixed anytime soon. The showers were one of the reason I chose this gym.
