I'd order a half dozen donut holes & a chocolate milk and sit at one of the little canopy tables. The windows were all glass and my dad could see me sitting in there the whole time, we were such regulars the workers and regulars knew me too. The shop was a welcome relief in the summer, baking in the summer heat i'd walk in the shop with its little bell and suddenly my sun drenched skin was covered in a cool blanket while I enjoyed my little treat. After that location closed we frequented the fairchild & vermillion location via the drive through. Always friendly, always fresh donuts. This place is nostalgia and sugary goodness to the core.

Rick's made my graduation cake, a custom princess cake, over a decade ago and so I was so happy to see this was still an option they offered. Aside from the cakes Rick's has so much to offer. The ladies were very sweet (one of them was singing in the back room some soft sweet song and it was really quite beautiful). Service was fast in the bathroom was clean! I got a smoked turkey with colby and pickles on rye bread (don't judge) and there was plenty of everything on the sandwich. My pumpkin whoopie pie was amazing, as was my peach hand pie (they had several other) and the cheese bread. Definitely a good place to stop and get some good food and snacks. On the day of cake pick up, I was done with errands at around 10am, I called the bakery to ask if it was possible to pickup the cake early. The girl on the phone sounded very annoyed with my request (I was just asking, they could have said no) and told me they don't do pickups until noon but I can still come in. So I get there and she immediately starts treating me like I was a huge inconvenience. As she's handing me the cake, she pulls out a receipt and started scolding me that pickups don't start until noon and it's right there on the website. I showed her my email receipt confirming 10:30am pickup and how there's literally two different sections with different times on their website so i was obviously confused. but she ignored my explanation and continued chastising me for the misunderstanding of the pickup times. I just let it go as I didn't want to argue but I left feeling very upset. I think management/owners dropped the ball on training staff on how handle these types of situations with professionalism and not immediately placing blame on the customer. I tried my best to smile and be friendly to her but she was starting to become defensive. There was no accountability for the user interface of their website. She made sure to make it known that it was my mistake alone. I have not decided whether I will continue to support this establishment but I won't be back for awhile.

My guests agreed, because I got rave reviews on the cake. The buttercream is so light and not overly sugary, it almost tastes like whipped cream. The fillings are also all fresh and yummy. Now, I'm a big fan of dropping in to pick up a 7" cake or some individually wrapped cupcakes, or ordering ahead of I want to be sure to get a certain flavor combination. Their cookies - shortbread and chocolate chip are also to die for. Make this your next stop for a cake or just a fun impromptu treat. You won't regret it!

(My 3 selections - in their individual plastic cupcake holders - were placed inside a colorful, floral printed plastic bag. Nice touch.) Standard gourmet cupcakes are $3 now, and more flavors are available than I recalled. I've recently also tried lemon lime, salted caramel, and peanut butter mousse. Generally, I'm not a huge buttercream fan, as it usually is too heavy on the butter for me, so the lemon lime and salted caramel were not my absolute faves. If I lived in this area, I would definitely want Ashlee to make my wedding or any special occasion cake!
