I'd long been curious about Penzey's Spices, a national chain with one Indiana location that…read morehappens to be in the Castleton area. Tonight, I had a little time before a nearby film screening and decided I would finally drop in. First off, I instantly loved the vibe of this strip center location that's not too far down from Trader Joe's. This location is pretty solidly accessible with nearby accessible parking, appropriate curb-cuts, and a layout that I had almost no difficulty maneuvering. In case it's not obvious, Penzey's Spices specializes in spices. They also offer online ordering (free shipping with $49+). I have to admit I'm no expert when it comes to spices. I'm also not the most adventurous eater due to a fragile system. However, I've been venturing out of my comfort zone lately and I got lots of ideas from my visit to Penzey's. I have no idea how many spices they carry. It's a lot. I found the prices quite reasonable. I found items that I thought "I want to try that" and I mostly found the prices at such a good point that I would be willing to give it a try. Of course, some are more than others. That's life. Employees were friendly. The overall energy of the place was light and hopeful. They also offer gift boxes, trial bags, and accessories. However, when it comes down to it this is really a spice store and boy do they have amazing options. I believe in terms of corporate that Penzey's is based in Wisconsin. I'm just grateful they're here. They add such a spark to the Castleton area, and they seem perfect as a companion to the nearby Trader Joe's. It took me way too long to get here. It won't take me that long to get back.

Just pepper alone they probably have a dozen different flavor variations. We have over 80 spices in our pantry. Some of our go to are Frozen Pizza, it takes a Jack's frozen pizza to the next level. Others are Sandwich Sprinkle, Tuscan Sunset, Mural of Flavor and California Seasoned Pepper to name a few. If there isn't a location in your town you can always mail order from their website.

But the best reason to shop here if you are a tea lover like me is that their tea selection is incredibly cheap. Other reviewers have not emphasized the price aspect of things enough, so here are some numbers: Regular black teas cost around $1.00/oz (~$0.10/cup). Given that there is no minimum purchase (you bag your own tea in whatever quantity you desire), you can go in, buy 1-2 oz. of several different teas that catch your eye, and then come back later to buy your favorites in larger quantities. Decaf teas are maybe twice as expensive - not as great of a bargain, but not too bad. Of course you can splurge on silver needle white if that's your thing, but that's not the main attraction here. It seems they get quite a few teas from Market Spice in Seattle, which means you can buy the famous Market Spice cinnamon-orange blend in bulk and then brew it so strong it makes your house smell like cinnamon Red Hots. Or you can get Tropical Isle, a black tea beautifully colored with blue cornflowers and yellow calendula leaves that tastes as good as it looks (and makes a great present). Or get the Earl Grey, or the Assam, or jasmine or rooibos or... the list goes on. Come here. Buy some tea at a small fraction of the price you'd pay in the cafes just down the street. And be thankful that a store like this exists in C-U.

I cannot say enough good things about Nashville Spice Company (NSC)! My husband and I have been…read moreimpressed and intrigued with this shop since we discovered it shortly after it opened. We had the pleasure of shopping there again today, and I felt compelled to post my 5-star review right away. Merchandise -- Spices, rubs, seasonings, sauces, sweeteners and more. Some you've heard of but theirs are fresher and better. Some you've never heard of that are AMAZING. We learned today that the store holds 430 different varieties. Can you believe it? It's true, and the only downside is the challenge of making your purchase decisions. Service -- Over the top! If 430 varieties wasn't wonderful enough, the shop owner and his staff can tell you the nuances of every one, where in the world they originate and how best to use them. We were Christmas shopping at NSC tonight, and I must tell you about our incredible experience. They're featuring 4-variety gift sets, and we wanted to choose our own contents for a gift set for our son's family but coordinate it with the staff's advice. To say only that the shop owner was accommodating would do him a disservice. He was passionate about making sure we had the best choices to match our description of our gift recipient, then took the time to customize the shop's pre-printed recipes (more beautiful than some postcards) and print additional recipes to coordinate with the spice set. We were blown away! Good news -- NSC is expanding! In early 2020, the shop will move to the Coachlight Square shopping section and substantially increase its footprint. The current location will remain theirs and become a home decor shop. Awesome!
