The Bronze Sculpture of Roy Rene on Hindley St is frequenlty confused with a real human being by passers by.
This is not so much because it is particularly lifelike.
It may be somewhat because of it's resemblance to one of those guys who put on a hat and spray themselves with gold paint. But the most likely explanation is that the average passer by on Hindley St is particularly drunk.
The Sculpture is by reowned Australian Portrait Artist, Robert Hannaford, and depicts Roy Rene, a depression era South Australian Comic who coined several Australian cliches, opposite the Theatre Royal at which Roy Rene used to perform. Hannaford has captured well Rene's vaudvillian tenacity and the handling is expressive and rough.
The habit of the pose chosen by Hannaford is a bit awkward, as though Rene was stumbling, falling backwards or thrusting his crotch. All these mannerisms tend tend to suit the local of the work and help Rene to fit in with the other patrons of Hindley St. read more
