Sitting just outside the main entrance to the State Library on North Terrace is a smallish sculpture that's big on impact. It's a sculpted head of the artist Dr John Dowie.
Now be warned, you may have to look closely for this statue (remember you're looking for a head not a full body) but once you find it, you'll be delighted with what you find. This statue has an interactive element. Push the buttons on the small PA system below Dowie's head and he'll talk to you! It's very cool.
This is a relatively new sculpture in terms of many of the statues along North Terrace and was created as recently as 2006 by artist John Woffinden.
So who was Dr John Dowie and why is his head immortalized in bronze? He's the artist who created the Three Rivers Fountain in Victoria Square, the statue of Alice that sits in Rymill Park and the Victor Richardson Gates at Adelaide Oval. read more
