Matthew Flinders, a pretty good sailor (intentional understatement).
He was fairly influential in the naming of our country (thank god we are not New Holland) and also was the first to circumnavigate Australia. There is a lifesize bronze of him sitting on North Terrace in the city.
Compared to other depictions of Flinders which I have seen, such as the very impressive work outside St Pauls Cathedral in Melbourne, this one is pretty weak (although at the same time I have seen worse). He is depicted in uniform, with three corner hat, sword at his side and navigation equipment by his feet. He holds a telescope, tucked under the opposite arm, the hand of which rests upon his jowl as he gazes out postulating.
The work was executed post posthumously, in 1934. read more
