Kizer is a challenging yet a forgiving course for a muni. Many of the ponds currently don't have water so balls are easy to find. The greens currently have some weeds which should burn off soon in the heat so they play a little slow. The driving range is large and one can use any club. The putting area is a good size as well. Plenty of parking! There is little shade so you are exposed to the sun and the wind if there is either. read more

I'm sure every hacker in the greater Austin area has played at both the Clay and Kizer courses. Keep in mind Kizer is a Muni and it gets a lot of traffic. So, if you set your expectations accordingly you will have a great experience. If you want a challenge play from the back tees. Water comes into play on a few holes and when the wind is howling like it was when I played this past Saturday course management is key. There are a grass driving range and a putting and chipping area. There is a beverage cart but due to Covid, there are no water stations on the course. Green fees are reasonable and there is a resident rate as well as some monthly and yearly sign up options. There are three must play Muni courses in Austin (IMO) Kizer, Clay, and Lions. If you have not played all three well then get your hack butts out there and swing baby! read more

I have spoken before on Jimmy clay, but I fear the only way to do this is get it on both courses since they are connected. The only reason I give this 2 stars is because of the beautiful course. I love this course but oh my goodness, don't even get me started on Barbara. I rolled up to the links ready to rumble and attack this course, however we faced a major obstacle when attempting to pay. This pathetic, rude, and negligent grandma named "Barbara" didn't provide the aid that is necessary for the sport of golf. Golf is all about positivity and having fun but Barbara has neither of those things in her life. Her own coworkers legit told us to write a review to get her fired. Barbara needs to go because even though I had an amazing round, I had the thought of this eye watching me the entire time and only bringing negative thoughts. I was also instructed by her coworkers to try and avoid her when walking in and go to the other person. Unfortunately, the "other person" was not there. She made things very difficult, at the end of the day I love golf. (Barbara MUST go or me and my foes will speak to someone above her I'm sure there are many) read more

I had a great time on the course with my friends but the pro shop worker barbra especially was very disrespectful towards me and my friends. She made the environment very unwelcoming when I was just asking questions trying to improve my experience. I think that golf should be a great time for all and Barbra made it the opposite. Even coworkers told us how disrespectful to everyone she is and how she ruins the whole atmosphere and they don't want her there. I think that talking to her or removing her would be the best way to make the course welcoming for all people from all backgrounds. read more

Average course at best. Prices are decent, driving range is in poor condition and good luck getting a tee time.. they have a bizarre system where you have to make an appointment 5 days before within the time of 6-7am or you won't get a tee time unless you want the sunset hour... This course has some pretty cool views and the layout keeps it entertaining throughout the round. Some cool Par 3's and other holes with plenty of water hazards to get over and around. Currently, the greens look well maintained and the fairways are mostly green too! Staff seem cool and helpful throughout the check-in process. Personally, I like Kizer over Jimmy Clay because of the layout of the course and I found it a bit more interesting to play on! read more

I'll preface this reveiw with the fact that this was one of the best maintained courses we've played on in a long time. First couple greens were cut a bit too short but thats no problem as the rest of the course was cut perfectly and it was a very well designed set of 36. When we booked our tee time, they were told we would have 6 people in our party, to which they allowed us to have two consecutive tee times to presumptuously golf together, more or less. This is never a problem at any course we've ever played at. Morning of the tee time, one of our players had to cancel, so we had 5. We asked if we could put the 5th on the same tee, as we're all average-above average, and we're all riding carts so pace of play would be fine. They told us "absolutely not, we got in a ton of trouble during covid [even some doctors aren't wearing masks anymore and its been determined covid isn't a problem at this point] for allowing 5 players, so if we get caught playing 5, we will be in serious trouble, the marshall has been told that your group has been warned and will not be nice about it".... okee dokee then. So we get assined to the tee at our time, they put three of us (carts) with one single (walking). Basically all this means is that the pace of play was molassas because the three had to wait around for the single the whole time, losing the people in front of them, backing up everything and guaranteeing that there was no chance we would even be close to golfing with our squad. Fast forward to the turn. We hop on the tenth hole (actually hole 1 because we started on 10), nobody in front of us, nobody behind us. We start noticing that the marshall is basically just cruising around the course following us, watching everything we do. By the 13th hole, we catch up to the people in front of us, nobody behind us as far as we can tell. This is where things went south. I personally decided that there was no harm in all five of us hitting our balls from the same tee box before anyone proceeded, seemed pretty darn harmless to me, so we did. Even after that, we let the three go play out their hole before we played out ours. As we approach the 14th, the marshall literally carts out from behind the outhouse he was creeping on us from and lets us know that we WILL NOT BE WARNED AGAIN, DUE TO COVID THIS IS A MASSIVE VIOLATION. This is pretty nuts to me. So we abide, we wait. At this point, another cart group is cruising up behind us, the marshall is basically in our group at this point with how often hes hanging out. So the group of three tees off from 14 with our twosome waiting a very safe distance away so as to avoid any chance of contracting covid, and the marshall has the audacity to tell us (twosome) to get closer to our threesome because the people behind us (not our group) are getting too close. This is about the point where we lost it on this marshall. He must have gotten the message because we let him know that this tight regime they seem to be upholding ended in September of 1945, and he drove off to finally let us play out the last 4 holes in peace, following their absurdly strict rules. We were definitely expecting to be met at the end of 18 with a message that we weren't allowed back, but that somehow didn't happen. Golf is a game that is well structured, visibly regimented sport. For that reason I understand if a course (which is well within its rights) is to restrict groups of 5. I'm not gonna lie, I've never run into it being a problem personally, but I understand that. However...... if a course is going to restrict it, in this current status of the world, it MUST be because you fear a pace-of-play concern. Its frankly insane to say that "we got in trouble during covid and thats why you can't play with a quick/carting group of 5 golfers. I'd even be okay with them saying, we don't allow 5 unless you promise to abide by a scramble style or something similar that speeds up the pace. Covid is over, sorry folks. All this aside, it was a beautiful day, we got to spend some time together in the clubhouse bar (nobody got covid somehow despite us all being in pretty close proximity), and we enjoyed the great quality and layout of the course. This has been my worst experience at a course yet. Me and three friends of mine(all under 18 with the youth membership) showed up about two minutes late to our teatime and were hassled and nagged by an old man named Roy who works here. Not only was Roy disrespectful but then around hole 11 another worker rolled up on us in his cart and said people were complaining we had been taking too long. He asked us to show him a receipt to PROVE we had payed for our round and then made fun of us for taking too long and when we told him we were learning and not very good he said "I can tell". Please tell me how a group of 4 new golfers WALKING the course are expected to keep up with groups of 1-2 playing through behind us? We would be happy to let them play through and we even did for a couple groups who just asked us directly and kindly. The old women named Barbara at the front desk was also insanely passive aggressive and deserves to be fired. Golf is a hard sport and it takes patience and support to get better. Other than this being a nice course, I really do not recommend coming here if you're looking to have fun. read more

Austin has several good city courses and this is one of them.  Hard to go wrong with this course and its next door neighbor, Clay. I have never seen this course in bad shape except during prolonged drought conditions. During my last visit, the greens and fairways were in great shape. This is a 'links' style course so everything is in front of you except for hole #17. It is largely void of trees, water comes into play on several holes. If the wind is blowing, it can be tough.   My preference is to walk and this course is certainly a walkers paradise. I think the only big distance is between hole 10 and 11, you may have to walk briskly to keep up with your cart riding partners here. There is a large driving range on-site and a good sized putting green.   I have not tried the 'pub' for food/drinks as of yet.  There are a few large sitting areas outside to hang out and decompress after you dunked a few balls and failed to break 100... again :) All in all: good price + good course + good facilities == great time.  I have shot some of my lowest scores in the history of me here so I can't be hating on it. One of my go to courses when I'm jonesing for a golf fix. read more

As I waited in line to speak to the World's Slowest Check-In Guy (category: municipal golf course), I was nervous. I wordlessly worried whether or not the 2nd UYE Golf Event could possibly top the 1st UYE Golf Event. I mean, that was a pretty damn good time, even by Yelp's high standards, and waiting for this schmuck (inside joke to those who read the threads too often) already put the day in 2nd place. "Uh, the greens are real bad. I'm just telling you", Speedy warned me, like that absolved the golf course of any responsibility, as I forked over about $50. "Why don't you give me discount, then, jerko?" I wondered. Ah, but I was put at ease when his quick-witted cohort offered, "Yeah, but them tee-boxes and fairways are just fine!" and the two of them chuckled. So, I guess that makes *me* the sucker? Crap, but the day wasn't starting well. As I threw my clubs in the cart with Slammin' Camron, my frown turned upside down. Freaking UYE Golf, man! We don't need no stinking playable greens! Cam, Jefe, Mark the Photographer and I enjoyed 18 holes of water-hazzard, sand-trapped, gimme-putted golf, and I learned many things: Camron's ex-girlfriend is dating a talking scrotum. Jefe's little sister has a dirty mouth. Jefe thinks of Quani when he looks at his balls. Mark gets the job done with nary a wood in the bag. The duck-billed platypus is at home in Central Texas. Don can get a date with the beer cart girl without learning her name or number. Chad can make 7+6+5+7+4+4+5+5+6= 40. I am Yelp's Long Drive Champion (I don't think anyone else knew they were competing, though). So, was the 2nd UYE more fun than the 1st? It was too close to call. read more

Ahhhh, what a perfectly beautiful day for golf. Don "Friendliest Guy In Austin" P. and I spent it hitting little white balls around with sticks, and then chasing them in spiffy little carts. We discussed deep and important topics such as women and pogo sticks, and pondered the meaning of life (sorry, no conclusions). Apparently, there were four other Yelpers in front of us, but they were too busy hurrying away from us to avoid being pelted by the monstrous golf shots we were raining down to socialize much. Yes, the greens were bad. Some were hideous, some were okay, which just forced me to hone in my deadly approach shot. But here's the bottom line - the weather could have sucked, the pace could have been agonizingly slow, and the company horrible, and I'd still give it 5 stars. Why, you ask? Two birdies, that's why. One on the front nine, and one on the back nine. The elusive birdie is like crack for a below-average golfer like myself, with a handicap over 20 (well, if I had a handicap, that is). And I scored two of them, which made the 15 I put up over the last two holes to take my score over 90 slightly less painful. I still cried myself to sleep in the fetal position last night, but had sweet dreams of pretty birdies flying around. As Justin took the time to point out my lack of math skills, I must come to my own defense. It was 5-6-4-7-5-7-5-2-4 that I somehow added up to 40...which I quickly re-calculated to be the actual 45 that I shot. Hey, I didn't have a calculator on me, and I've only got 10 fingers...5 of which were occupied by a Lone Star. So, let's recap - the weather was perfect, the pace was fine, the company was stellar, and I was playing one of my best rounds of golf before absolutely flaming out on the last two holes. Five big stars for the 2nd UYE Golf. Thanks to El Jefe for organizing (and kicking down a cold Modelo at the turn), and to Don for being great company, and I'm looking forward to UYE 3 and taking the [self anointed] Yelp's Long Drive Champion title from Justin. read more

Man oh Man did this work out well. Thanks to all who came and played, thanks to all who endured our play (beer cart girl was quite accommodating, apparently. I brought my own beer, and shared liberally. With my Liver.) Now, to explain some of the weirdness of the previous reviews, -Mark is left handed. -Cameron is better at golf than I am. -Justin is better at golf than I am. -2 of my golf balls had the words "Super Soft" written on them, but they seemed to be of the same density as all the others. -1 of my golf balls said "Mojo" on it, which we can only assume was an homage to the great Quani-Mojo, who so far is the only girl to say she was going to show up and play and then actually do it. That ball is now in the water hazard off of 15, I think. -The back nine was a little fuzzy, but I hit more than 50% of the fairways, the only golf-related goal I accomplished all day. -My little sister is a scratch golfer, and very funny. I need to get her at one of these events. -My little sister does have a potty mouth, and the joke she used to use on us at the golf course worked perfectly when I used it on Cameron. You should have seen his swing fall apart, it was like watching a slinky fall off a shelf. I did however, really enjoy playing with you guys, thanks so much for coming. There'll be another event in May, and then we're gonna do a Par 3 version of this in June, on a specific date that will make more sense at the time than it does now. And the Greens at Kizer are in shit shape, I gotta tell ya. read more
