TL:DR - Good staff, nice technology, though it appears that the in-store talent is being held back by corporate's lesson-focused business model. I'm a self-taught golfer of modest ability who's looking to decrease my annual "replacing balls due to wildly errant drives" budget. Nothing more, nothing less. To the extent golf is, for me, an excuse for some exercise and a bit of social drinking, I've no particular interest in optimizing the quantitative dimensions of my game. Knowing my round score adds an unnecessary layer of noise to my enjoyment of the game. With these parameters in mind, I opted for a "swing analysis" at the Westlake GolfTec with James - one of the location's PGA-credentialed instructors. Nice guy, by the way. If he offered private lessons on the side, I might consider working with him. The swing analysis was great - as the video, in combination with GolfTec's proprietary motion analysis software, identified several biomechanical pain points and problems with my swing. I took what I learned to the range and fixed some stuff with my swing. This bit was undoubtedly worth the modest amount I paid for the service. Unfortunately for autodidactic golfers, GolfTec's business model only permits you to have one such swing analysis - after which you're steered towards buying packages of lessons at 10x+ multiples of the cost of the swing analysis. Given my modest goals as a golfer and belief in my capacity for self instruction (I've taught myself programming languages, how to play the guitar, etc.), this is a shame, as I'd definitely go back for some more video analysis, but I ain't dropping $1500-$4000 on a game that I take less seriously than Mario Kart. If Golftec could fix their business model to allow for multiple a la carte swing analyses and lay off on steering customers towards lessons as the only route towards reaching their game goals, this'd be an easy five stars. read more

There are plenty of instructors in the area, but finding a quality one that will understand your swing and communicate clearly the flaws and how to fix them, has never been easy for me. I've had instruction from many teachers in NY, more bad than good, and the only way to find a good teacher is from recommendations from people in your network or you luckily found the right person when reading through a list of names on web searches. In NY I was able to find a quality instructor in middle school that was able to change my game from Ok to above average. I saw my handicap get as low as a 5, as my instructor taught me fundamentals and drills to proper technique and consistency. Without proper technique golf is a very difficult game to become consistently good at. Moving to Texas I have been searching for a teacher that can get my form from a 10 down to hopefully one day a scratch golfer. After my first lesson with Derek I knew right away I found a teacher who understood the game and the swing. All his input on my swing makes sense and the changes he makes provide results immediately. Granted your bad swing habits always come back, but Derek will catch them and put you on the right track. The fastest way to improve your game is to have a swing that will get your mechanics down and shaft/body position in correct position at impact. You can keep buying the latest drivers, but if you are not striking the ball correctly, nothing will improve your swing faster than proper instruction for an A quality coach. I have told Derek personally that I've had instruction from Grade A coaches to D, and I would put him on the top tier. I'm sure after your first lesson with Derek you will agree, he has a lot of knowledge about the swing and will have an impact on your game. read more

GOLFTEC Westlake is as good as it gets in terms of improving your golf game, sharpening skills, completely brand new beginner golfer or an expert golfer looking to get better with the best coaches and technology in the business. Robert Johns is my personal coach, and from Day 1 he has been in-tune with where I am in my progress and makes every effort to make sure I am getting the coaching I need. I can say without a doubt, and I have the video feedback to prove it, that RJ has improved my game significantly, about a 10 stroke improvement thus far. I have started to enter competitive formats, which goes to show how working with my coach Robert Johns and GOLFTEC's Technology, improves your confidence in shot-making. The overall environment at GOLFTEC Westlake is amazing, Flint Nelson is a fantastic coach at GOLFTEC as well, and he is always in there checking on you, your game and making sure you have what you need to be successful with your game. Makes you feel comfortable and you really get to enjoy talking about the game whenever you want with Flint. All of the coaches RJ, Flint, Gilbert, and Robert really are amazing people and truly love the game of golf. They will definitely get you to where you want to be in your golf game. I also really enjoy how easy it is to book practice times, all you need to do is go into your student portal, where all of your lessons are stored, and select the time you would like to go in. As long as that time is available, you can book and just show up to practice your game with the GOLFTEC technology video feedback. I have been working with Derek White at Golftec Westlake since summer 2015. I took up golf in mid-2014 and really enjoy it. My friends told me I should take some lessons before I develop bad habits as they had. Derek has helped me to understand the proper body mechanics for golf from the ground up. He uses analogies that make it easy to envision the correct techniques and employs drills and explanation to fix issues quickly. He has a down to earth teaching style that make learning/improving enjoyable. My friends have commented on how much better my game has become in a few short months. I just got back from my first ever swing lesson with Robert Graves and was not disappointed. He had me swing my 7 iron for a couple minutes to start and I was hitting everything off the hosel, short and right. It was bad. Right away, Robert pointed out a few things I was doing wrong, reviewed it with me on their video tech compared to pro swings, and had me take some more cuts...night and day! I recently discovered Derek White at Golftec Westlake by accident, but it is no accident that he has already helped my game. He obviously has the knowledge, but more importantly, he has the ability to teach and help you learn while he patiently guides you through the lesson. He adapts his lesson plan to your limitations or strengths. He has really made a difference even though I'm 70, have a fused neck, no meniscus in either knee and I didn't start golf until I was 65. I have been taking lessons at Golftec Westlake for about 6 months now and my game has improved immensely. I have taken lessons before and it wasn't the same as the attention given to me at Golftec. There have been countless times when Derek stayed later with me to make sure that I get down what we were working on that day. Derek does a great job explaining things in a way that make sense to you and realizes that not everyone benefits from the same type of instruction. I came in on a tight vacation time line from South Korea. They had the appointment I wanted which was great. Nolan was who did my club fitting. He was positive and patient and most importantly honest. I hadn't played or practiced for a while... months. I've been going to Golftec for 2 months. I take a lesson every week with James Wood. My handicap has gone from 10.5 to 6.5 during that time and I'm regularly shooting scores in the 70's now. After the first three lessons I actually got worse. But, starting at lesson 4 I started making steady improvement.
