Unfortunately this was a pretty disappointing experience. Pace of play was extremely slow to the point that we ended up leaving after 9 holes. At one point there were three groups stacked up on a par 3 tee box, which pretty much summed up how backed up the entire course was. We even called the golf shop during the round to ask about the pace, and were basically told there wasn't anything they could do about it. It seemed like the course was very understaffed -- one person was trying to run the golf shop while also cleaning carts, so there was really no one available to be out on the course helping manage pace. On top of that, the snack bar area was closed at around 2 PM, so there was no option to grab food or drinks during the round. The course itself is fine -- nothing terrible, but nothing special either. It's a pretty average muni layout. The bigger issue was everything around the golf itself. Basic things you expect at a course like pace management, food/drink availability, and overall staffing just weren't there, and it took away from the entire experience. read more

This is a great municipal course they've battled over the years trying to keep it healthy and getting everything right but it's definitely looking better than it had been tea boxes are looking good as well as the fairways are much better and the greens are probably the biggest improvement they were rolling really nicely when I played a week ago Me and my son play her quite a bit together. I broke into the 90s on this course and I've always enjoyed it. read more

Had some nice drives out here and didn't expect to enjoy this hidden course in the middle of the city. With the hot days it was nice to see all the watering stations filled up and ice cold. Check this place out for a good time and some experience after hole 8. read more

We love this little golf course! The staff is so fun and friendly we love Michael! and the club house upgrade is so nice ! With food , drinks , pool & comfy chairs! The course is kept so green with nice fairways! and all the beautiful trees provide lovely shade and a nice breeze plus a pretty view of Downtown Austin. This is by far my favorite golf course in Austin. The staff is nice and very chill. You can even BYOB as long as it's not in a glass, which is awesome. Makes for a very laid back and relaxed golfing environment. Both times I've been I've called first for a reservation since their online ordering system does not allow for reserving 9 holes. The place was very accommodating for anyone needing to rent clubs, both times my mom was able to rent female petite clubs. The carts work well and are keyless for COVID safety purposes. We usually come after 4:00 pm for their twilight specials. It's also located right next to the ACC Riverside Campus. Bottom line, if you're into golfing, this is your spot! read more

The staff is awesome. Incredibly selfless. I lost my phone and wallet (rough day) and one of the staff rode the course looking for it at closing time, and another offered me a free drink to take with me as I rode to look myself. Beyond that, the course itself was incredibly fun and a great price. Those first 10 holes before losing my wallet and phone were a great time :) I'm sure the next 8 are as well. read more

I guess no one wanted to do it. The fairways are terrible they really need to give the course some LOVE and ATTENTION. I know you get what you pay for but that amount of trash is unacceptable. I got a great deal online to play on a Sunday AM no less. I had set my expectations low due to previous visits and the course conditions. I was pleasantly surprised to see that ACC is pumping some money in improving the course conditions. The good: Price, go online there are some great deals. Course conditions are average. Course is challenging from the back tees especially with a little wind. Friendly staff and fellow golfers. Course is mostly wide open so it is pretty forgiving if you are the average golfer (yes that's most of us). The not so good: Large areas of standing water on the course. You should really clean these up as they are in play and they are a health hazard. Fairways could use more grass. Greens are pretty furry and soft. By being so soft any ball coming in high leaves a crater on the green. A lot of the bunkers are more mud than sand. This all being said we had a great time here and I hope the improvements continue. I would definitely return to Riverside for another round. read more

I've been in Austin for about a month now and my experiences at golf clubs this far have been sub-par. Particularly at Morris and Lions the fellas in the pro shops have been rude, belittling, and borderline disrespectful. I called Riverside today and the man I spoke with was so helpful, happy to chat, and overall had a stellar attitude. I was planning an event for a group of us visiting Austin on a bachelor party this coming February. Michael and his team were very timely in their responses and helped us create a solid outing for 12 of us. They have more than enough types of club rentals (left/right handed) and even premium sets. They also shared they have closest to the pin and longest drive markers to amp up the competitiveness for my group! It is BYOB (cans so no broken glass). But there is a grill and most of the basic foods needed (nachos, burgers, waters, etc.). Compared to the other courses, the price is right especially for those of us that don't golf avidly and prefer an open course. If you are looking for a fun outing, reasonable, cost effective, and close to downtown Austin this is a great option. read more

This is one of my favorite courses. Designed by renowned golf course architect, Perry Maxwell, Riverside was once Austin Country Club. Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite played here when they were young. Harvey Penick once lived behind the fifth tee. It's a challenging, yet fun course. Beautiful large trees frame the fairways. It's not unusual to see deer running across the course. There are many great holes: #2 looks like a short, easy par-4, but don't be fooled. A long, narrow green is protected by a creek. A par can be turned into a double with one mistake. #6 has a small green, protected by two bunkers. A tough par. #14 is a driveable par-4. Three good shots gets you a birdie. # 16 is a tough hole. With a good drive, you will still have a long approach shot. Par here is almost like a birdie. Riverside is always enjoyable to play. It's the kind of course if you play well, you can go low. If you play poorly, you won't mind so much because it's so pretty. read more

Riverside was a decent place to play for a hot Sunday afternoon. The course used to be the old Austin Country Club.... so their are lots of big trees and big, open fairways. I don't think it's maintained as it probably once was as a Country Club. Some of the greens were in pretty bad shape, there is no driving range for pre-game practice, the tee boxes are somewhat difficult to find.... but overall it was a nice experience. I would definitely go back to this course.... hopefully I can have a better game! read more

Because of all the negative reviews on here from 2015, I feel compelled to write a more recent one. I didn't have the...apparently misfortune...to play here before this weekend. That being said, the course I experience was in pretty decent shape. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming, the tee boxes were in good shape, and the fairways were reasonably groomed. The greens weren't in great shape, but you could at least plan a line. For the most part, the bunkers were actually sand and in pretty good shape. A FEW of them were pretty much dirt. The back 9 was in better shape than the front, but overall the course played pretty nicely. A weekend round including cart and greens fees will run you about 35 bucks before noon. The price drops after that. Just keep in mind that the course won't be in the same kind of condition as a course where you pay 60, 70, or 80+ dollars for a round, and you'll have an overall pleasant experience. read more

Their fees are higher than most nice courses around this area. I think the cart was 18$ it's self and 40 to play. Never seen a price that high for a course in this condition. Wouldn't recommend to anyone unless you don't mind a unusual price. read more

Pros: - I now have a Yelp account because I felt compelled to warn people about this golf course. - As of this month it is BYOB. - I heard coyotes howling. Pretty sweet. Cons: - The fairways are bad. The rough is un-mowed. OB is a barren wasteland. - There is more grass growing in some of the bunkers than on the greens. - Feral pigs have rooted up half of the greens; probably explains the coyotes. - It is not cheap (~$40/round); you can play better courses for half the price. - Water in the coolers on the course is warm, probably not refilled daily. - Hole #1 is inexplicably either a par 3 or a par 4 depending on which tees you're playing. Verdict: I am viscerally angry writing this review for the Saturday I wasted here. read more

Pros: Friendly staff, well designed with many great holes, good character, adequately maintained for course with it's greens fees. Cons: Parking/clubhouse hard to find, 1st tee hard to find. Signage on course not existent or helpful. You have to turn in your cart well before the sun is actually down. They are upfront about this and I understand those employees work all day and deserve to go home. But if you're a twilight golfer look elsewhere because you'll have to stop with sunlight still left! I'd recommend checking it out. Good course for the money, rich history, good character. But for the money there are better options. read more

Well priced for a municipal course. It was late in the season, so sand traps appeared to be in the middle of winterizing or refinishing, and greens had been sanded in spots. Wide open fairways on most holes. Lots of very old trees on the course. Only a few water hazards. A great place to have fun and enjoy being on a golf course instead of at work! read more

Not sure why this place gets such bad reviews. I've been coming here since middle school and have always had a good experience. You aren't playing at STL country club but the price reflects that! Cheap drinks and a great clubhouse patio and very kind staff. I got a free hotdog and a free jack and coke because they had closed out the credit card and I had no cash, told me not to say anything and it to worry about it! The single slowest round of golf ever allowed. Course management is terrible and apathetic. You can't allow people to play 5+ hour rounds.

Upon hearing that this course was under new management, I decided to give it another try. The last time I played at Riverside was in 2015. After a few holes, I wasn't sure I was still at Riverside golf course. The greens were green and the sand traps were sandy. There weren't 9 foot weeds or fallen branches, littering the sides of the fairways. All of this has been cleared out, and you actually feel like you're on a course, rather than at the city dump. The amount of TLC that is being given to this course is obvious, and I'm excited to see the final result. read more

I see there hasnt been a review for a while but I can say this about Riverside, I learned how to play golf on this course with my father and friends and have hosted 2 golf tournaments out there. The improvements that have been made to this course are remarkable, the greens still have some dry spots but that's because of a fungus from what Mike told me and the fairways are descent. I love playing this course because it's a fun round to play for one BYOB if you choose to and two because it's not very expensive, I pay around $24 when we go out there to play and we have a good time. The branches are gone but just like any other golf course you are going to have your wooded areas with pebble creeks and what not. If you haven't played this course in awhile go and check it out. I bet you will enjoy playing it. Last but not least Mike and the rest of the staff are awesome and extremely helpful. read more

This course plays A LOT different than it did 6 months ago. Austin Community College recently bought the course and has been dumping a ton of money into it ($400k just on trimming trees). Greens on the front 9 are still a little rough, but should be good to go in about a month. Back 9 is in beautiful shape and is fun to play. Always reasonably priced, $35 on weekends and drops down to $27 at noon. $17 twilight after 4pm! read more

One of the best city courses you can find in Austin. They have recently reconstructed the bunkers so now there is actual sand you can play out of. I've always said the testament of a good course is how well the sand traps are maintained. If a course has terrible traps best believe the rest would look like crap. read more

You know the expression you get what you pay for. Well this pretty much sums up riverside. I will give it a little slack since there was some rain recently, but even so the course is in poor shape. The maps at each tee box aren't legible anymore and flow between the holes is a little odd. Some of the greens were soft and some were concrete. So no good feel for the course. There isn't much difference between the fairway and the rough. And on some of the holes the rough is covered with stones and branches - good luck finding your ball in a pebble field. All and all they could clean it up and make it average - but spend the $3 extra and go somewhere else for now. read more

In good condition for the price. Riverside used to be pretty rough years ago, but their professional and friendly staff/management has really turned this course around. I suspect the consistent rainfall over the past year has helped to keep things green, and they've made the most of it. The Tin Cup Grill also deserves a shout-out. Thanks y'all! read more

Worst golf course I've ever seen, greens look like they have been rooted up by pigs, "fairways" are crap and bunkers are as hard as the cart path. I would be hard pressed to play this course for free much less the outrageous rates they are asking for. Also no marshall and jerk kids driving into people, avoid like the plague. read more

Where to start... To say the course is in rough shape would be a compliment. Not a single green is intact with most of them being more sandtrap than green. The grass on the greens is dying and what's left is so long that you need a wedge to putt. The fairways are dry and rock hard while the second cut is so thick that you spend more time looking for your ball than playing even if you hit a decent tee shot (I have never found so many golf balls right off the fairway because they are buried under grass and others couldn't find them). There are fallen tree branches everywhere including on some of the greens. The sandtraps are more like concrete than sand. I played with two others who played this course ~1 year ago and the say the course has nose dived since then! This course is a terrible representation of golf and this is quite obvious because we played almost the entire round on a Friday afternoon without seeing other golfers. One of my fellow golfers said he overheard someone in the clubhouse discussing some type of fungus that is supposedly destroying their grass which is understandable and not their fault....however it hasn't stopped them from charging full price and not warning golfers of the horrendous conditions! Really hope they can turn it around as this course could be fun with it's manageable distances, great views and wonderful location! read more

Played this course 12/23, first time since September. The course has improved 100%. The fairways are in very good shape for winter, and the rough has been mowed so you can find your ball. Most of the bunkers have been filled with new sand for the first time in years. The greens need more work and probably won't be back until Spring. Not that it helped my game, but the club house has new floors and new furniture in the Tin Cup Grill. The crummy old rent clubs have been removed and new rental clubs are on the way. And the club has bought all new golf carts! They lost their TABC license, but are applying to have it reinstated. Until then you can bring coolers. If the improvements continue, I believe that it will be back to or better than it was at its lowest point by this Summer. I look forward to adding it back to one of my favorites. Now if only they had a driving range. read more
