I used to love playing this course. Good condition, affordable, never too crowded, easy location. But wow, all those things (with exception of crowds and location) have changed. I can't believe I paid over $30 (used to be around $20 or less always) to play a course covered in GARBAGE (Par 5 #4 had empty liquor bottles and trash everywhere). I bet you can't tell the difference anywhere on the course between the crabgrass infested rough and the crabgrass infested fairways. Every hole was waterlogged and sloppy. Logs and branches crowded each inch of the fairways. The greens were insanely slow, waterlogged, and infested with fungus. For this price, you could easily play Shadowglen, Morris Williams, Lions, Kizer, etc etc. All those courses are in much better shape (and have driving ranges). I will not be playing Riverside for a long long long time. read more

Always go in the later afternoon, for those prices $25 or less it is well worth it, would not pay more though. Very open and pretty simple/easy course. I am in no way the best golfer, and usually play bogey golf here. Even if you have a bad fade you are safe here as there are few trouble spots with ob, most of the time you can play from the other fairways. Will say a great place for someone new to golf to come out and play a full 18 at, not much worry about rate of play, and def. alot easier of a course for a new comer. Ok so it's not Pebble Beach or TPC Sawgrass but it gets the job done. Perfect spot if you want a nice quiet afternoon round and don't want to spend a lot of money. The course and greens are well kept and the course isn't that difficult. They have coupon offers online and also offer student discounts. So if you have a student ID and come in the late afternoon your green fees will be around $20. That's a deal for this place. The only drawback of this place is that it's connected to the Austin Community College. So if school is in session there's a lof random non-golfers just walking about on the golf course which can get distracting. read more

Riverside is for the days when you just want to go out and play golf but don't want to spend much money. You can easily get a tee time here for Under $30 and sometimes under $25. Unfortunately the course conditions sometimes reflect the price that you pay. I've often seen huge patches of dirt in the middle of fairways. That being said it serves it's purpose as a cheap way to play the game we all love. read more

The only thing positive coming from this review are the nice people in the pro shop. Real talk: this golf course is the worse! The majority of this course is hard dirt. You can't take any grass with your iron shots because it feels like you're hitting off concrete. The greens were in horrible shape with large areas that had dead grass and was covered with dirty sand. On top of the conditions being terrible it played incredible slow. 3+ hours on the front 9. Our group decided to head in after 13 holes and call it a day. Green fees are only $30 (18 holes & a cart) but I would recommend the director of course maintenance (if they have one) to invest in better equipment, grass seed, watering system and whatever it takes to improve the conditions! It's worth the investment and you can justify by increasing the per round play cost! read more

The course is fine, it's a public course on the rebound. If you want an impeccable course, go pay $60, wait on every tee-box and have a 5-6 hour round 45 minutes from downtown Austin. This is a public course that is WIDE OPEN in terms of fellow golfer traffic, and its RIGHT downtown. The employees are extremely helpful and the course is on the rebound. Fairways are fine, rough is alright, and greens are getting better daily. Lions municipal gets a way better rep and is moderately better/if better at all. Go play Riverside. -Dauz read more

Riverside golf course is almost like a diamond in the rough, or ghetto. Ha-ha. Where else could you play golf for $19.00? This is there twilight fee right now, starting at 2:30. Enough time to play a whole round if you don't get hold up behind some college kids that haven't had a clue of how to swing a club. If you don't mind the occasional homeless person trying to sell you some golf balls or kids playing in some of the few steams that this place has, or some f the local thugs walking through the fairway to get to their apartment, this place could be good to you. The course is usually in decent shape, but keep in mind that you always get what you pay for. Also this Is a fun course for beginners. read more

I was just at this course the other day Saturday afternoon visiting from Houston TX for the MS-150. I checked in 15 till 12 and the guy couldn't give me the 12 O'clock rate ($29). Since I don't live in Austin, I figured why not and paid the $39 and walked on the course. I was expecting to see a pretty good course for $40, or at least in Houston you spend $40, the course is going to be pretty good. I was very disappointed from the first tee. The tee box was lop sided and the markers were like 1 yard from each other. The fairways were all in pretty decent shape, other than one of the par 5's where it was pretty much all dirt. The greens were absolutely HORRIBLE. If you like putting on hard dried up dirt, this course is for you. The course is very short, the longest iron I used on most holes were a 7 iron. It has I believe 2 drivable par 4's which are kind of fun, but other than that I don't really like the layout all that much. I would of gave a 1 star review, but I shot a decent score so I gave it a 2. I could honestly say, I will never be going back to this course until they fix those greens or at least drop the price. read more

Much improved from when I played previously and on par now with the rest of the Austin munis. ACC has done a great job in investing and getting this fun, historic track back into the shape it deserves. I will be back again soon. read more

On one of the coldest days of the year my 7 year old was certain she wanted to ride a golf cart while I played!!! We came prepared but Brent Hurt and the staff at Riverside GC were so helpful and friendly that they made it an enjoyable experience. Not only did he lend us his golf cart cover but also looked for a heater for us. I played a lot of golf with my father growing up, and how satisfying it is at a historic golf course I can teach my kids how to love the game. read more

Riverside was once what it was. It isn't anymore. It's diseased greens, some with actual missing turf and ruts are truly awful. Some tee boxes are just dirt mixed with sand. Some sand traps are so shallow the only way to get the ball out is to chip (impossible to slide a sand wedge under the ball). Nothing is enforced out on the course - have witnessed golfers playing barefoot, drinking to excess, leaving empties on tee boxes, no raking of traps, you name it. And then there's not bending on morning rate (higher than afternoon by a whopping $6 or so), even though the course is literally nearly empty. Wouldn't 10:30am business at the afternoon rate be better than no business at all? The player ahead of me at the counter today was a young woman, and was told "to play as much today as she had time for". When my time to pay came, sorry charlie, no bend on that all important morning rate. I've played Riverside many times - but will never go back. We as consumers have enormous power with our pocket books, and I'm choosing to spend my money anywhere else. Good luck keeping what has become a real dog track (too bad, it could be much nicer) open with your silly and inconsistent attitude toward customers. read more

Surprisingly nice course. Great value. Extremely pleasant staff, especially the pro. Many greens have not fully recovered from when they were mismanaged in the past, but all are playable. Most bunkers in good shape. read more

I would give this a zero star if I could. The greens were part sand trap, part burned grass. The fairways are too hard to take divots. Worse golf course I've ever been to. There was no starter no marshal, everyone was just let off on the course causing extended delays in playing each hole. We had 4 groups each on different parts of each hole trying to play. read more

We had a corporate outing here this past week. Course received 4inches of rain 2 nights before, and the first few holes were pretty soggy, but after that all was well. Some well designed holes here, and you can tell the staff is working hard to make the course better. Greens were in excellent shape for the most part. We had a great time, and the pro Michael Travis is top notch. He worked with our group to make sure everything was great for all of us. If you are in Austin, this course deserves your support. read more

Played this course sometime in March, 2011 and I'll say it wasn't the best course I've played. Very rough greens, rough fairways, pretty much rough all around. For the same amount of money, you can play Jimmy Clay and have a much better experience. No driving range, small putting green, not much here guys. I don't recommend playing this course anytime close to this post. read more

Riverside is a course that has a good location and good price. Where else can you pay under $30 to play golf within 5 miles of downtown? The back nine holes are some of the best in the Austin area. There are plenty of opportunities to score well if you are playing well. It used to be Austin Country Club until the 1980's, but has since had some reconfiguration. If you're a historian of golf you wanna come here. One of the finest gentlemen in the history of the game was the head pro here for half a century. Harvey penick not only lived here but taught major champions tom kite & Ben Crenshaw. His little red book and my favorite if you play golf you're my friend should be read by all golfers. I wanted to play this course to see if Mr. Penick's ways would rub off on me. I felt patient and full of joy while there. Paul in the pro shop showed me around the clubhouse and encouraged me to have fun and play well. What a wonderful day. If I had been back home in Wisconsin I would have faced frost warnings. I live in Austin about 4 months of the year since 2012 and have been a regular visitor to Austin since the late 1990's. I had played Riverside twice during those visiting years. My first round at Riverside as a part time resident was two years ago, as the drought was ending. I was shocked at the deteriorated condition that previous ownership had let the course fall into. Not so now! Austin Community College ownership has invested time, committed the necessary funding, hired a dedicated and friendly staff, added new carts and maintenance equipment. 75-80% of the greens are fully recovered and the course is a pleasure to play. There are still a couple fairways on the front side that are wet after heavy rains. The bunkers are groomed and sandy. Holes 10-18 are fantastic, in beautiful condition and probably look like they did when Penick, Crenshaw and Kite were playing there. I have played the course twice during February this year and will visit again during this stay in Austin. Frank Y. read more

I think anyone who has not played this course in awhile will be pleasantly surprised at the significant improvements and much improved course conditions that have taken place from last September (2015) until today (October 2016). The past year has been one of rebuilding and hard work. I would say that many of the issues that have been raised in previous reviews have been addressed and continue to be daily by the professional staff we have working to make your playing experience the very best it can be.
