I don't know why this place is rated so low!? Mind you I may be biased as I came here before dinner around 5PM and the place was not packed at all. Not being from town we didn't realize this place was located in Roxys near the door until the bouncer asked us if we were going to the bar. haha. Again, at 5PM the place was not packed at all so we were able to walk up to the bar immediately to get our frose drinks and tokens (order by batches of 20) and you can pay with card or cash. I liked the option of paying for tokens with my card as I don't really carry cash and makes it easy to do one transaction. The Ay Bay Bay Frose was delicious and pretty strong. I would probably keep sipping on those all night but they had some pretty clever drinks on their menu that make me want to try them based on their names. Example - Beach Better Have my Mango or Princess Peache's Downfall. There are plenty more so be sure to check them out. As for the variety of games, I can't help but enjoy a place that has basketball of ski ball so that's a win in my book. They had classics like pac man and mario cart as well. For the bigger games they run 4 tokens a person which isn't the cheapest so you can probably go through them pretty quick if you're sharing. Lastly, for the ambiance of the place I was a fan of the various artwork they had on their walls like the mario cart theme going around the place. They also have TVs in the background that are playing the most random movies like hellboy vs. rush hour 2. You can't really hear them but if you just need something to watch they got it. I absolutely love A4cade! When I first got there, it seemed really small. Once you walk around, you will realize that you have plenty of options to spend a couple of hours here. Once you enter Roxy's, there is likely a staff member asking if you are here for the arcade. Then this guy will check your ID first. S/he will take direct you to go through the door on your left, and enter the arcade. I played so many games there: Pacman, Super Mario, Tetris, skee ball, and many others. And two full bars in here! They had a healthy selection of cocktails to choose from. I got the Rainbow Road $11 (Clouds and Unicorns. Sipsmith, Sour Watermelon, Grapefruit). It was delicious! You can buy tokens from the bartender. I think for $5, you get a certain number of tokens that should get you through a few games. There is a DJ next to this other bar, and he makes it clear that he doesn't take song request. He does a pretty job mixing top 40 songs. The music makes it feel like it is a club, but the lighting is not dim enough for the club vibe. I heard this place gets packed over the weekend, so personally, I'd recommend you visit on a weekday. The only suggestion is that I think it would be great to have hand wipes. People get to eat food in the arcade area, and it would be convenient to have something like Antiseptic Towelette. read more

I came here on a rainy, snowy Saturday night to celebrate my birthday. Based on other reviews, I knew this place was popular. Since it had been opened for a while and the weather was bad, I was hoping that there was going to be less of a crowd. My gaggle of friends and I arrived at 8pm and still had to wait a good hour before getting in. Once we were in, I understood why they have to severely limit the number of people allowed into the space. Even so, the place was still way too packed. I bought $30 worth of tokens (120 tokens) for 10 people to share (each game was 3-4 tokens) and we still weren't able to use up all the tokens. The good thing was that people were generally considerate and only played one game on their turn before getting back in line. In the 2-3 hours that I was there, I probably played 3 games total? Drinks and food were good and cheap. I'd probably want to come back just for this. The only downside is really that this place gets way too crowded on weekend evenings. Lines can get quite long on Friday and Saturday. The girl behind the bar was friendly and explained that tokens are only sold in $5 increments. A decent selection of beers was on hand. Most games were the equivalent of 50¢ minimum and in disrepair. I tried to play Ms. Pac Man and the joystick barely moved. Buttons on other games did not work well either. I received a complimentary postcard as I was leaving. The drinks are better than any other barcade I've visited, and the entertainment is better than any speakeasy I've visited, and you can get some tasty food next door, so A4cade has a lot to offer. We visited on a Wednesday night and they had karaoke, which was a lot of fun as well. They even have an Xbox with several games at the bar - free to use! My only complaint here is about the arcade aspect of this bar - the selection of arcade machines is smaller than most barcades, you need token to operate them, the token machine only works in $10 increments, and several of the games have broken buttons or other issues. Came on a Saturday night around 7:30 pm and was dismayed to see a 200 foot line. That said, it moved fairly quickly and we were in by 8. (Though the bros in line behind us kept loudly stating there was a $20 cover, there was not -- nice try, though.) As everyone notes, you have to go through a set of doors, then the freezer door to enter A4cade, which was indeed packed. The majority of folks were there to play games, and we were just hangry, so it took us about five minutes to grab a set. I do agree that you have to be quite aggressive to do so, though - we were lurking behind a set of bar seats to do so. Ordering did take a while as many of the folks we encountered were barbacks. My friends and I ordered a Land Shark for two (which came in a giant Tardis) and a Yoshi's Island. We heard a woman complain that her drink didn't come in a special container, though, but I don't think she realized only certain drinks get them. We also shared the Mighty Rib Melt, the Double Fried, the Loaded Dog and a side of fries. The melt and fries are those at Roxy's, so I'll talk about the other two. The Double Fried was so good -- 80% because of the combination of hot honey and ranch. Also, breading was very solid and held tightly to the chicken. The Loaded Dog was messy but also delicious -- nice touch with the gouda and the dog was juicy. We played a big after -- as long as you're not picky about which machine you want (i.e. Star Wars) there appeared to be a few openings. Tokens go a long way so just start with $5 (and some machines will just take cash directly). People seemed open to taking turns as well. To the person who claims the concept is overly consumerist: we have a semantic disgreement. I'm really not sure why it would not be. Arcades ARE consumerist. The pinball machines are literally themed after sci-fi franchises, and people appear to choose their machines based on these distinctions. That said, a few suggestions based on the crowd: 1) it looks like staff is communicative regarding the line in the front, but if the line is that long, it would be helpful to get clarification in the back as well (based on the bros); 2) even though it's convenient to get food, drinks and tokens on one tab, I think it means folks are generally pretty proactive about getting staff, except there didn't seem to be as many to go along during the busy time. I don't think I would wait that long again, but I'd stop by on a day off or if I had an out-of-town friend. read more

Waited 45 minutes in the cold to get into this place at 7pm on Saturday night. Poutine tater tots were delicious and the Hot Honey Bacon Melt was a 7/10. One of the drinks in our first round was served in a paper cup. That was pretty lame and made it look just awful. I think my husband got a drink called "worst drink ever" or something around that line and it really was LOL. For out 2nd round we got the Princess Tod's Punch for 2 and we got to choose a specialty cup yay! We got the R2-D2 of course! He's a cutie! A LOT of ice in the drink but it was pretty good. Funny story: I had the intention of going to an arcade in Taunton called Round 1 but for some reason thought the name was Area Four. Looked up Area Four, saw that it was an arcade, thought it was the right one. Glad I made that mistake because Area Four turned out to be such a neat experience. Area Four is located inside Roxy's. We walked through a kitchen door and then a freezer door and there it was, an underground arcade/bar. Kind of a mind-blowing experience if you will. The games are very old-schooled, think big pac-man, ninja turtles, and tetris machines. They also have the typical pinball machines, basketball, and race car games. The bar was also awesome. We had a drink in a star wars holder and they also serve tiki drinks. They give you a generous amount of alcohol to give you a little boost when you're playing games. $5 for a cup of tokens that will probably last you roughly 6 games. Will definitely be back soon!! The last time I was here, I ordered the vegan grilled cheese with broccoli, and the broccoli was cold. I sent it back and asked them to fix it. They made me a second sandwich, temperature was fine, but this time it was missing the cheese. I sent it back again, pointing out that there was no cheese. Went here on a Saturday night and arrived at the line at 8:00pm to celebrate a friend's birthday. Because it was freezing out and it had snowed earlier that day, we figured the wait wouldn't be too long. Oh but it was. We ended up waiting for about an hour. I started at the door of the Heartbreak Hill shop next to Roxy's. The line moved in large groups because that's how they let people in. I really liked this barcade because it was sort of low key, since the only sign outside was for Roxy's grilled cheeses, rather than advertising there was an arcade in the back. The entrance to the arcade was cool because it was like entering through a freezer door in restaurants. Immediately the vibe changes from normal grilled cheese restaurant to crowded arcade scene! Definitely had a wow factor when you enter. My favorite part about this place was definitely the value of the drinks!! They were delicious, strong, and not too pricey! I ended up ordering two rainbow roads, which I thought were pretty strong, but not overbearing. I loved it! Each cost $11. Some other cocktails were $7 too. Also, if you order a drink for two people, it comes in a sweet R2D2 cup holder (see pictures). I ordered the 3 cheese grilled cheese ($4.99) and added bacon (extra $1.50). I wasn't overly impressed by it, but it's probably because I didn't order one of the signature ones like the green muenster or the pulled pork one (both were ones my friends said they liked a lot). My friend ordered the cheese fries with bacon bits on top and I definitely wouldn't order those because they were reallly salty. The games were really fun, but I thought by 9pm, it was too crowded and you'd have to wait your turn. But it wasn't ridiculously long waits because people were understanding for the most part. They had pinball, a driving game, Donkey Kong, a gun game, basketball, skeeball, and loads more. The shuffleboard game was fun too and didn't require tokens! That one you had to wait around to play. (I also don't know how to pronounce this place -- is it supposed to be Arcade with a stylized R as a 4 or A-4-Cade? This question is coming from a person who called Deadmau5 dead-mao-five for two years.) A bartender said they had plans to open earlier than 5 at some point in the future, but that point is unknown. 21+ yall. / FYI: Roxy's: in the front where you can do takeout. If there's a line, you don't have to wait in it if you just want Roxy's and no games. You can also order Roxy's from the arcade via the servers so you don't have to go back and forth. Line: There's a door in the back that goes to the arcade. When we came at 5 on Saturday, there was already a line, and it took us around 30 minutes to get in. The line was LONG even when we left at 7. The space inside wasn't crowded, but definitely at its max if you consider the amount of machines available, etc. So I think the line is a means of crowd control (both from a legal standpoint and a sanity standpoint) and warranted. You can decide whether or not its worth waiting 30+ min to get in. Space: 2 bars. One in the back and one smaller one on the side. There are stretches of high tables and seated tables along the sides and the machines make up aisles in the middle. As someone else mentioned, people leave their stuff on the tables to play games so a lot of them are unoccupied but have stuff on it, which sort of makes it difficult for people to find a space to eat food. Might be better to have -- Lockers or cubbies somewhere (maybe in the front of the space / DRINKS: So fun and all 'gamey'. The Land Shark comes in a shark cup. The rainbow road comes with a unicorn. Other cocktails are delicious and come with fun sippy straws and the like. Truly a grown-ups arcade. / THE GAMES: Skeeball, basketball, Ms. Pacman, Street Fighter, Asteroids... you name it. Everybody was pretty cooperative with each other and nobody was hogging the games. You get your tokens from the bartenders/servers (PS you can buy their fanny packs if you want their look). Pinball, skeeball, driving games, foosball, and shuffleboard. It's packed so be prepared to leave your jacket and backpack somewhere random. 20 tokens are $5 and most games are only a few tokens :). Shuffleboard is free but requires a list to play. This is a super long board so mehhhh. I like the one at state park better. The waitlist is a little chalkboard closer to the bar. The drinks were pretty overpriced in my opinion, the cheapest option on the menu is a small can of lukewarm wine. The games were fun and most were working efficiently. My coworkers and I had an extremely poor experience with the bouncer. He said that 2 of my coworkers were not allowed into the establishment because they were taking too long in the bathroom....then my 8 months pregnant manager went out to talk to him and he gave her a a hard time and id'ed her again before letting her in! My friends and I popped into Roxy's a4cade on a Wednesday evening for my birthday celebration. The line was a little long and the wait was roughly 35 minutes (you will be carded at the door). Clearly there has been a demand for an establishment like this! Once inside you forget about the long, cold wait and get excited about the overwhelming feel of nostalgia and look forward to the food and games ahead. It's great to have a place like this in the neighborhood! Bonus: the ceiling is like Pac-Man! It's old school gaming down to the smallest detail! Our group consisted of 7 and finding seating to eat was impossible (many seats had piles of coats) NBD we're here to game anyway. Then it got weird... The billing system is a bit convoluted and I am not a fan. A credit card must be given and a tab must be started, this includes token purchases. Considering we're in the age of identity theft and credit card fraud I don't like the idea of handing over my card to a server and having them keep it all night. This really rubbed me the wrong way and made us extremely uncomfortable. I would suggest getting a prepaid credit card and bringing it with you to give to them. The food is flavorful and it's nice to have a local place where I can enjoy nearly authentic poutine. The avocado and bacon grilled cheese, a personal favorite, is DE-LISH and I was happy to see it on the menu. Drinks are interesting and I highly recommend the Worst Drink Ever. It's a little fruity, a little tart, and a hint of carbonation. They've just opened and have a few kinks to work out (billing, coins being eaten by the games etc) therefore, I'm trying to be as generous as possible. Another bonus is the servers are attentive and really quick. This was a pleasant surprise considering they're navigating a huge crowd (Double kudos guys), they go out of their way to make sure you are having a great time and have everything you need. I was a little disappointed to see some of the games I was interested in playing we're out of order, especially the Doctor Who pinball. I cannot avenge the Time Lords if it's out of order LOL Skee-Ball was fun and I'm still terrible at it but it was a barrel of laughs. Overall, I will definitely visit again but with a prepaid credit card in tow. They, seriously, need to work on their billing procedures because keeping someone's credit card all night isn't acceptable. read more
