One of the advantages of living in a warm weather climate is the almost year-round accessibility to outdoor activities. Thankfully, Austin is good at maximizing on this trade and offers numerous locations for spending time outside. There are a number of local boat rental outfits on Town Lake, but I highly recommend Rowing Dock. A repeat customer, I've never had a bad experience here. A bit hard to find, check out their website or the pics with this review to see a map. If you're coming from downtown, go through Zilker Park and under Mopac. If you're on Mopac, take the Rollingwood exit, do a u-turn, and then go west under Mopac. If you're hosting an out-of-town visitor, this stop is highly recommended. Better yet, if any of your family or friends are northerners, head to Rowing Dock in November and then call them to rub in what a fabulous time you've just had on the water. Point being, Rowing Dock offers kayak & paddle boat rentals for really fair prices. For $10, you can spend an hour on Town Lake in a single kayak. For $15, you and a friend can work on timing and coordination in a double (and thus, only have to shell out $7.50 apiece for an hour of hilarity). They also have rowing courses for those interested in a more long-term commitment. Whatever service you decide on, the staff is friendly, patient and helpful. Their equipment is well-maintained and they don't make you spend hours on safety training and paperwork. You sign a form, they hold the boat while you struggle to get in gracefully. Once you get on the water, head west for serenity and glimpses at some of the largest homes in Austin; or, head east for spectacular views of our small city. Hate to spoil the secret, but go early! They open at 7:30am and hardly anyone is out. It's cool and calm, bring your coffee and chillax! They take credit cards now, but still bring an ID. They charge on the half hour, bring a timepiece of some sort (tip: your phone inside a freezer bag works well, then can take pics too.) Hey, so I normally go to this kayak location because it's most conveniently located to my home. I've been 5+ times and no problem. Today was different. I checked out a kayak when they were almost fully stocked and received a taped up paddle. No big deal. But, this paddle wobbled every time it hit the water and started hurting my back after about 20 minutes. When I returned, the guy unloading us asked how my ride was. I told him about the problem with the paddle and he just says "Oh" and returns the paddle back to the other ones. Ouch. read more

Really wanted to go paddleboarding during our trip to Texas! This was one of the places that were still open for kayaking/paddleboarding after 6pm, so my friends and I came here after our hike. It's about $15 a person for an hour of paddle-boarding. I believe it was $10 a person for a single-person kayak and $15 for double kayak. After signing the waivers and whatnot, they store all your belongings and valuables in a plastic container with a number & they hold onto all your bags too! They were really helpful with helping us onto our kayaks and paddleboard and explaining how to do everything for those who never tried it before. We were provided with life jackets that ranged from either kid size or a universal adult size. We were able to paddleboard and row a pretty good distance with the big amount of space allocated for activities! You're sharing the water with a bunch of teams and paddlers/kayakers, but chances of disrupting them are pretty slim. It's super easy and fun! Give it a try! read more

They have a variety of kayaks to choose from (single, double, etc) and they even have ones that are dog friendly which are my favorite. It's off the beaten path, and the last dock, giving it a charm and experience you won't get elsewhere. I've been out here twice now, once on SUP and once on kayak. My first time I went to the Rowing Dock was to go paddle boarding, and I had a really good time! The staff was very helpful, but they did fail to mention how much extra we would have to pay if we exceeded our one our time limit. It is hard to keep track of time when your out on the water. I went on a weekday, so the price for a SUP for an hour was about $15 and I ended up having to pay an additional $7 for going over the time. It was a great experience and I would love to do it again, especially there. They had parking and they would hold onto your car keys and wallets. I just think they should have some sort of student discount, or if they do they should advertise it more. If you ever want to try paddle boarding this is a cool place to try it out, especially for their weekday prices. read more

Three words: You must go! This is such a fun experience and I had a blast going with my friends. You rent hourly and have the choice between kayak, 2 person kayak, and standing paddle boat. I believe there is one other choice too. We had a complete blast! You can row towards the city skylive or towards more nature. You'd be amazed how far you can go & come back in an hour. The Rowing Dock has a full calender of classes for every member of the family to quickly fill up your calender any month of the year. A friends daughter took a class in hiking and kayaking that she will not stop telling stories about and teaching us adults new skills - very empowering for a young girl that once had low self confidence and "was" very shy. After a month of classes at the Rowing Dock this once very shy girl is teaching her Momma and me all sorts of rowing and outdoor lessons and tips.. The last Full Moon we went out with flashlights and glow sticks and rowed to the Congress bridge to see the bats - I highly recommend this family friendly event but if your family member happens to have 4 legs bring your own life jacket - I would not recommend kayaking at night without a life jacket for all your loved ones - be safe and have fun! read more

This was my first time kayaking! I really recommend the Rowing Dock. My partner and I went last week when we were in Austin and I liked it so much I went back another morning for a solo trip. I absolutely loved it. Go early because the sun in Austin is no joke! We went around 8am. It was great since there were barely any people on the water and parking was easy. Super serene and romantic. We saw LOTS of turtles, ducks and ducklings, some fish, a blue heron?? or something, and gorgeous scenery. The staff were all nice and friendly and made the whole process very easy! They don't provide any paddling instruction but I also didn't ask for any since we did some research online ahead of time (just watch some YouTube vids before you come or Google kayaking for beginners, it's all simple stuff). My only complaint to the owners of this biz -- Please add an option to tip when customers pay by card. Great staff! read more

We were visiting Austin and wanted to do some outdoor activity. When the forecast says it's going to be 100, there aren't a lot of comfortable options. Stand Up Paddle boarding was a fantastic choice. The rental was seamless, the staff friendly and efficient and the dock was very well maintained. The equipment was in great condition. The staff was helpful in getting us on our paddle boards and sending us off. We spent two hours out on the lake and it was peaceful and perfect. I had the pleasure of renting kayaks with several friends here and Shalie (the only employee on at the time) did a great job in organizing us and getting us out on the water pretty quickly. I've been to Austin a couple times, and Ive always seen people at the river, paddling and rowing their little hearts out; finally I said "enough is enough". My girlfriend and I took a trip down to the river, stopped into "Rowing Dock" and the rest was history. Girl at the counter was friendly and informative, the rental process was a breeze, the boat crew were just the same. The whole experience was great and nearly not as stressful as I thought it might be, I'd suggest going around 4-5pm (If it's early August), it's not nearly as hot and the sun is making its way down, definitely makes for some great pictures. Nice little addition is if you're leaving the dock, paddle over to the right just pass the bridge/overpass there's a little island where you can actually get out and walk around it's about 3ft deep. Nice calm place to paddle. There were lots of turtles to see. Boards and kayaks are rented by the half hour after the first hour. The prices seemed reasonable. There are no bathrooms (only outhouses) or changing facilities here. They will keep your car keys for you behind the desk. There are cubbies to put your shoes in otherwise you should lock your belongings in the car. We rented paddle boards. The staff was friendly and helpful in getting on and off the boards. read more

Such a fun experience. My wife and our 13 year old went out on the SUPs (stand up paddle boards) got an hour to get some lake time in while on vacation. It was a short trip from downtown on the scooters and about a 10 min ride back with Uber (hey we ran out of energy). While we were out the wind really picked up and our kiddo got stuck. While my wife waited with her the manager Amber was quick the the rescue saving what could of been a bad experience for our daughter. Stand up paddle boards, canoes, single kayaks, double kayaks, fishing kayaks, they have it all. There is great parking and no line if you get there early. We started at 9am on our SUP rental and headed towards downtown. The dock is well kept with lockers for shoes. They have a key holder behind the register. All rentals are hourly, and they accept cards. While they don't have half day or full day rental discounts, you can get discounts on weekdays. We left at 11am when it started getting hot, and the line had gotten pretty long. read more

One of the best places on Town Lake to get your paddle on! My dad and I usually go down here and get single kayaks, which are $10/hour, plus $5 for every additional half-hour after that. Their kayaks are quality Wilderness ones, and comfortable. The dock itself is spacious and apparently made of eco-friendly recycled materials and shit. The staff seem pretty chill for the most part. The only thing is that it's located pretty far West, just on the other side of MoPac. So getting down to Tom Miller Dam or Redbud Island is quick, but going the other way takes forever. One of my favorite activities to do in Austin is to take a kayak out on Lady Bird Lake, and Rowing Dock is my favorite place to rent one. It's generally pretty easy to park here, and I've always received excellent service. It's 15 dollars for an hour in a double kayak, but I don't know that they pay super-close attention to the time limit -- we've never had to pay extra and I'm sure we've stayed out for more than an hour. If it's a nice day and you wait till mid-afternoon to show up, be prepared to wait. We always come around noon and have never had a problem. But yesterday, when we left (around 2:00) we heard them saying that it was a 45 minute wait for a kayak -- so come early! Also, they don't mind if you bring a dog along and put her in the kayak with you. We always bring our pooch, Charlie, and she loves it. We'll kayak up to the bottom of Barton Springs pool where lots of dogs frolic and play. It's kind of gross kayaking back with a wet dog, but it makes her (yes, I named a girl-dog Charlie) so happy that we do it anyway. read more

Rowing Dock was super fun and an awesome experience! We came here because we bought the Groupon and it was definitely worth it! What a great deal. Two hours for $15 in a tandem kayak. We paddled all the way down to the Congress St. Bridge at around sunset on a lovely Saturday evening in Austin. My wife and I really love the outdoors and this definite helped us experience the awesomeness that is Austin. As for the staff. Friendly, cool, and accommodating. They checked us in right away and processed our Groupon. They held on to my keys for me just for safety's sake. Within a few minutes we had our lifejackets, paddles, and were hopping in our tandem kayak for a paddle. We'll definitely think about coming back next time we are in Austin. I like how they have a parking lot, but it's small. Good thing my party and I arrived early because we were able to snag some spots before the parking lot was full. Check- in is a quick process. The staff are young, but nice for the most part. I haven't been kayaking in a long time and had a lot of questions. The staff didn't check with me or my party once we got on the dock to see if we had any questions. I feel like the staff assumes everyone went kayaking before and know the process. I didn't know they differences between the boats and had to ask. I enjoyed kayaking once I got in the boat and away from the dock. I don't know how to swim so I was nervous . I had an expired Groupon, which should have been converted to credit $ for $ as explained in Groupon policies. In my specific Groupon purchase, there is absolutely no fine print regarding holiday weekends. They would not honor my credit of $25 because it was July 4th weekend. I asked to speak to a manager whom was unavailable. So basically, everyone working has no power to change anything, or make a wrong situation right. That is an issue all in itself as I believe a manager should always be present for issues such as these. I get that I lose my promotional value, however because now I'm essentially needing the credit of the dollar amount I've paid originally, there should never be black out dates - furthermore, in my purchase there was no fine print stating anything if the sort. The employees handed me off one by one as they couldn't seem to comprehend my predicament. Each stating to refer to the fine print, I asked them to show me the fine print, which no one could. After the 4th employee, I realized this is a hopeless cause. One employee did try to school me on Groupon, stating they are a separate company and my $25 purchase does not equate to $25 actual dollars the company makes. I tried to explain that I'm well aware of how this works, but I simply don't care about their net amount earned as the end consumer is never apart of that initial transaction. All in all, my experience was horrible and I became 'that guy' holding up the line trying to explain why credit should have no black out dates, especially when there is literally no fine print on my individual purchase. I'm only in Austin for a few days but number one on my to-do list was getting in some paddleboarding. I'd heard Austin has a pretty good scene for it. I found these folks through Yelp. The reviews did not disappoint! They were super easy to find. Parking is plentiful. They have a lot of equipment so you aren't ever left waiting for others to come back. Their location on the lake/river is good. Go one way and you get nature and mini mansions. Go the other and you get downtown. I learned later that you can see the bat bridge, but I went mid-day so I probably missed the bats doing their thing. Price for this place is reasonable too. They'll do partial hours, which is nice. A lot of places will just charge anther $20 or whatever for going over your time. If I lived in the area, I'd come back! read more
