Terrible. I called them for my 86-year old mother. Her condo had a leak in the basement. First tech showed up and without even much investigation said we needed a "leak detection" specialist to locate leak. After paying this company $400-plus, they marked where the leak was and roto-rooter came back and discovered that, oops leak isn't there. They tore out moms drywall in her kitchen first. They also told her her furnace had to be moved to get to the pipe. I was beyond confused and called to speak to the plumber, but no one ever called back. In the end, we hired a master plumber to take care of the job. The furnace didn't need to be moved. My problem was I turned on the outdoor faucet in the early spring and the pipe in the basement going to the faucet burst. I called the plumbing company I normally use and they asked if it was an "emergency", I said no because I didn't want to be charged double to come out that day. So, it would be a week. I decided to call other plumbers to see if someone can come sooner. I called Roto Rooter and they could come the next day. I emailed them some pictures of the job ( even though it was probably a routine job for them). They came out on time. Took about an hour. The price is probably the same OR cheaper than the person I usually use. The trip charge was $15 less than the plumber I normally use. However, their labor warranty is 6 months compared to only 90 days from the other plumber. While I still like my other plumber, I now have another plumber I can trust and use again if I need someone sooner. My job cost a little over $200. I figure, anytime a plumber comes out, it's going to be at least $200. read more

To come out to our home, run a snake, charge 200some bucks, hit some supposed "ice"... tell us the back up of mud and dirt is from ICE... then see the cap outside is off, PIPE IS LEVEL WITH THE GROUND, is completely off.... meanwhile MELTING SNOW and mud/dirt pourssss in to outside drain. We hired a company twice over the past few months to assist with water back-up from our basement sewer drain. In one case, the 'professional' claimed the water was not connected to the house sewer system, and the water was from outside - what??? Another company 'cleared' the drain, said they couldn't get a camera in there (??), left a terrible mess in our basement and we had another back-up days later. We hired Roto-Rooter yesterday. I had a horrendous clogged drain (laundry machine problem, not toilet-related) and my sinks were backing up/draining slowly. When the sinks started to overflow, the clogged drain became emergent. I initially called Edwards plumbing, but after hours of work they failed to remove the stubborn clog (see my review for more details about that experience). Roto-Rooter was able to come the same evening of the day I called. They sent two experienced plumbers and within 45 minutes the drain was cleared. I was charged several hundred dollars for this, but I thought the price worth it considering the clog had defeated another plumber's best efforts. I learned that Roto-Rooter is the company that my building hires for external plumbing issues, which further increases my confidence in them. I had a blockage of my main sewer line out to the road and called Roto-Rooter. They arranged to have someone out the next day on 10/30/2017. Paul Smith was the service technician and he was amazing. Very friendly and was not annoyed at all when I asked questions about my problem and his thoughts on how to fix it. Also, when I asked a lot of questions about the equipment etc. I wanted to learn as much as I could about the issue that I was having and Paul was more than helpful. The job was a great success. He used the large snake and cut about 15 ft of roots out of the pipe. It took about 20-30 minutes to cut through it all and it looked physically exhausting having to ram the snake down the pipe and pull it back repeatedly but Paul never complained. His diligence and hard work saved me hundreds of dollars by having to dig a hole and repair the pipe. Other may have given up and just said I needed another solution but Paul put in the extra effort to get the job done. We had a good conversation during that time while he was working so hard too. He was very personable. Oh, and did I mention it started raining while he was working too? A+ service. I hope to not have to call again soon but if I do have any other trouble, I know exactly who I'm calling. Thank you! read more

I have used Roto Rooter on several different occassions, both personally and professionally. The previous review is correct, Orangeburg is a huge issue in this area and I use Roto Rooter pretty exclusively for my clients (I am an Ann Arbor Realtor) buying or selling homes of the Orangeburg era. I also use them for general plumbing issues, i.e. toilet leak or bad drain smell. I have found in every instance they are professional, knowledgeable and honest. We called the central Ann Arbor number and got a call back from the service person within five or ten minutes, had him at the door within 45, and he was gone with the drain cleared within another 45 minutes. We had a bad main sewer line stoppage. I spent hours trying to fix this myself with a snake and various devices. I called and in about an hour and a half the gentleman arrived. He was very pleasant and professional. He cut through the tree roots and has the water flowing. I was pleasantly surprised when he handed me the bill. He had to drive over an hour to reach us a few cities over and charged me $5 for fuel. The charge for the service was $280 which is ballpark to what other plumbers quoted me and they weren't able to get here so quickly. He performed the usual upsell attempt for service offerings and protectant products. His sales method was informative and very low pressure. Tech came out and ran rooter through sink and clean out. Said must be a pipe collapsed. Keep running water until he flooded our hallway. Didn't even ask if he could help clean it up. Just left the smelly water and packed up. Really not very professional. Won't call them again. read more

Our basement was flooded on December 2nd and Joe came in and installed a new sump pump. He didn't want to give us warranty because he said that the pit was not deep enough and we need to remove the back-up pump to make more room for the actual pump. We asked him to come again a couple of weeks later to remove the back up pump. He did, but he never gave us warranty even though we did what he recommended. He never went outside to check the pipes that are connected to the pump either (we found out later that one of the pipes was broken causing the water to be pumped too close to the house). A week after he removed the back up pump we had a lot of rain and we were out of town. Our basement got flooded again!! This time it was way worse than the first time. Kevin from Roto-Rooter came this time (Joe was not on call that day-January 1st) and he said that the pump was not plugged in all the way. Can you imagine our frustration when the last person who plugged it in was Joe!!! And he and the company don't want to take any responsibility for this mistake. We have to pay thousands of dollars AGAIN to fix the basement. Kevin did go outside (unlike his colleague) and he was the one who discovered the broken pipe. Very disappointing. We are seriously considering suing the company because their incompetency is costing us thousand of $. Jan.24,2012 Roto - Rooter: Anyone in the Ann Arbor area with a home built prior to the mid 60's probably has a sewer system made from orangeberg. The life time of that process can be relatively short, on the west side just look around at the lawns being dug up and you will get an idea. Imagine our surprise as we got educated when ours collapsed a few days ago and then discovered the huge expense to repair the system. Enter Roto-Rooter! When I called them expecting a warranty return from cleaning the line in November (which by the way is 90 day's slightly longer then most) and guessing the willow tree next door got thirsty again I was not concerned. They responded within the hour with a no hassle attitude. Problem 1 - at around 100 ft the snake (that's what they call those augur type things) hit something and it was difficult to return the snake to its rightful home. Problem 2 - lets run a camera and see what's what - low and behold we see water filling up the pipe again and something we can't decide on. Call in reinforcements - a second Roto-Rooter guy! Conclusion; ORANGEBERG the culprit of discontent in neighborhoods from sea to shining sea. Enter the Roto-Rooter boss now we have 3 trucks, its cold as the sun has gone down and a crisis as we discover I may not be able to shave in the morning. However they did break through the line enough to allow minimum usage and no hotel bills, did I mention it was really cold. Quote for repair - Ugh not good - but technology is a wonderful thing I am on a search and rescue mission. The process my now life long friends use is called pipe busting and ends up with a hole near the house and one near the road. This is where they will pull a pipe made from a highly staple composite while basically pressuring the old pipe into the surrounding ground (think stent) and forever solving outdoor plumbing issues, well sewer line issues anyway, no trenching. My research shows a long term cost advantage with the process verses trenching and is highly recommended. After working with these guys all day (actually watching these guys work) I learned that the team hired to do the job not only know what they are doing but have the method almost down to a science and that boss I mentioned earlier, David, was right there, in the mud with his people making it happen. I used roto-rooter to come clear out my shower drain on 9/5/13. I was fed up with only getting temporary results with pouring drano down my drain so I decided to have someone come clear it out. They ran a line down and unclogged the drain for $205 total including a $30 travel fee which I thought was completely excessive given that they're based in Ypsilanti and I'm in downtown Ann Arbor. But they seemed to have fixed the problem and I was happy...until today, 10/25/13, when my shower was clogged again. Of course their warranty was only 30 days so I'd have to pay 200 again even though it's been less than 2 months since they came. I give them one star because they overcharge and didn't give me any better results than a $7 bottle of drano. read more

I used Roto Rootter when my regular plumber was not available. It was a huge mistake. The first tech came out and cleared the outside drain. He was told that the toilet was backup so why he did the outside at a charge of $288.99 is a mystery to me. He worked for about 5 minutes and left. Tenant called me to say she was still having problems. I called Rooter back and they returned the next day and took the toilet off, snaked and called the problem solved at a $200.00 charged. I had a wonderful experience today! Zack came out as scheduled and talked me through the process. First he told me all the possible outcomes some more expensive than others and my options. My clog was connected to my sump pump. He used the camera found the problem and cleared the clog. I rely on Yelp for reviews so it's only right that I leave a review.
