I had a great time exploring this park. They did a really good job of adding in lots and lots of…read moreboardwalks and the wetland scenery is about what you'd expect. They also have some pretty expansive butterfly fields, which, alas I was unable to fully appreciate because I didn't go there at quite the right time of year but that's okay. Toward the back is a beautiful lake, and I'd recommend sticking to the trails back there because it can get kind of muddy otherwise. Great place to see a bunch of frogs, deer, and the occasional snake.

We visited the park on a crisp, sunny Saturday afternoon and were delightfully surprised by it…read more There are a quite a few short trails here that make for a nice easy hike. The terrain is relatively flat so it's good for folks of a wide variety of fitness levels. I think this would be a great place to introduce a young one to hiking as the trails aren't too long or challenging and there's a variety of stuff to look at. There are also a few benches scattered throughout to sit and take a break. There are quite a few knobby roots in the paths so I'd recommend shoes with sturdy soles. We didn't go out to the longest trail because we stopped on a whim and weren't wearing the best shoes. All the trails are well marked with white maps that show where you are and all the other trails so it's really easy to navigate. There are a few older signs that must have been there for a while and some of the trail names seem to have changed. So just ignore those. The first trail that spurs off the main trail leads to a little pond, but we couldn't really see it as it was obscured by cattails. Our favorite trail was the boardwalk trail as you're surrounded by all the cattails and it feels like the boardwalk just goes on forever. We saw some folks that looked like they were there to bird watch, so it might be a good place if you're into that. As it is a nature preserve, there are signs posted for no dogs and no biking. There's other info posted at the trailhead and some interesting posters as well.

Castaways is visible from the park. There is ample parking, with a lot on each side of the street, as well as a lane designated for it in the street. Nice, new landscaping featuring mostly flowering varieties of shrubs (hydrangea, Spirea, Viburnums, etc.) There are benches galore for folks to look out at the lake and contemplate. The bay side features a boardwalk that can accommodate the docking of several boats. The lake side features a playground for the kiddos, a shaded area, as well as some Adirondack chairs. Some folks bring their own chaise loungers or folding chairs to enjoy the weather and sights. Lots of folks are reading under trees (mostly large cottonwoods), there are a few bikes going by, but there are mostly pedestrians. There are a couple of unisex bathrooms featuring Dyson hand dryers. Today is a Saturday in July 2024, the temp is 80°F, with 50% humidity and clear skies, and I'm surprised that there aren't way more folks here. They might be watching the Olympics, as they just started today. Their loss...
