I think this used to be part of Ellison, but now it is separate. Some people refer to this park as the Riffle Range Trail because in the 30s there was a gun club there. You can still find some remains of the club even though the main building burnt down a long time ago. The mechanisms for target practice are still there as well as several sets of stairs that lead no where. There is a gazebo that I have read is original, however it looks much newer. There are some lawn chairs in the rafters of the gazebo if you need to take a little rest.
The park borders wetlands. I have not tried to use the location for kayak access, but supposedly you can. The park is 349 acres but 199 of that is wetlands. There are several connected trails that are marked. Most of the trails are marked pretty clearly.
If you come in the spring, during a wet summer, or a warm winter be prepared for lots of mud, particularly at the entrance. The terrain is varied-- which is why its one of my favorite parks in the area. The land portion of the park is suitable for hiking, snowshoeing, trail running, etc. The county park page says you can cross country ski here, however I wouldn't recommend it unless you are pretty skilled at it (steep portions of trail, tree roots, narrow trails that border water). Also, as with almost all other Monroe County parks: no bikes on the trails! Carry in, carry out. Uhm, dogs are supposed to be on leashes. Et-hem. read more
