Luckily there was a man in the water not affiliated with Uncle Bryan's that was giving us tips while we were in the water, which the instructor wasn't happy about. The photographer, Heath, never showed up. I texted him multiple times to confirm he'd be there and all I got was a thumbs up emoji so I thought he'd be there, but he never came. The instructors brushed me off and said "oh maybe he'll show." From shore it was impossible for my husband to get photos/know which surfer was me, so I was really disappointed to not have any photos.

My son (4.5) had surfed before but Tristan got him on the board alone for a couple of waves, and was understanding when his stamina ran out an hour in. My daughter (2.5) was great on land, but hated the waves once in the water, but she was never pressured. I'm an experienced surfer but only get out about once a year so Tristan was able to help me get that muscle memory back, and was patient when I took breaks to check on my kids (and husband! This was my first time for me to try surfing. So I had no prior knowledge or experience. But I…read morereally wanted to try surfing during this trip. I honestly thought the North Shore was just for surf superstars, and not for a beginner like me. But Steph really showed me otherwise. She taught me the basics of how to be on a board out on the shore. She was also reading the waves and watching the surroundings very carefully which made me feel safe. She even taught me about the local landmarks and culture while we're waiting for the waves. There was no downtime at all during the two hours of lesson. I ended up catching the waves quite a few times! I probably wouldn't have got this kind of experience if I went for a bigger surf school, or trying to take a class in crowed Waikiki beach. I feel very lucky to come across Steph and get a lesson from her. I definitely want to come back to the North Shore again and do more surfing on my next trip!

Ash taught me things that I didn't even know, despite having surfed many times for many years. For example Ash taught me how to line myself up with a marker on the land, taught me how to paddle more efficiently, and how to turn in the water. Things that I didn't even know I could be doing better. Before even getting into the water, Ash was teaching me things to look at and watch out for from observing the ocean.
