I like to view Yelp results and find them helpful. Mostly democratic... However, the review of Rosebud and Ed, the owner, are grossly skewed and unfair. He is an honest, reliable, experienced, antiques dealer. Besides his shop he is tireless in his efforts to do specialized shows far and near. Shows that only except qualified, vetted dealers. His direct and abbreviated manner is business like and never intentionally rude. He is a serious dealer with an unusual and refined collection. A very refined eye. People who cannot get by a few bumps in the road are missing a truly interesting and edifying experience. read more

What a horrible interaction I had with the owner. I tried to walk in and he was blocking the door. I said "sorry sir, excuse me." And he replied in a rude manner, "can I help you?" and I was taking her back and said "oh sorry are you guys not open?" and he responded in the most nastiest tone of voice, "does it look like we're closed?" What kind of business owner says that!? Avoid this place. It's also important to note, he smelled like urine and alcohol and may have soiled his pants. So if he is an old geriatric who has health issues, I apologize. But if that's the case, maybe get someone else to come in and work for you. If I could give fewer stars than 1, I would. It's apropos that his store is called Rosebud, named after Orson Wells' famous quote from Citizen Kane...he too was a despicable and crotchety old man who no one liked. read more

walked by this store today with my 10 pound dog on a nice walk, she stopped to sniff in front of his store and he CLAPPED loudly in front of her face, and said something to me. I couldn't hear as I had my headphones on, but i'm glad I didn't because I know it was unkind by his glare. I was quite confused as we were just walking past, and she was sniffing the sidewalk, not even any of his items or store. After reading other reviews, i'm confused how this guy even has a shop. He doesn't like children and is very open about it, telling me "you're not doing a good job" because my child picked up a toy dinosaur that he had put on the sidewalk for display. Today is Saturday, June 7th, 2025 - I decided to stop by the store on my way home from work. The sign on the door said they were open Tuesday through Saturday until 4:30 PM. I checked my watch -- it was 3:55 PM -- so I figured I had time for a quick look, maybe even find some antique picture frames. As I stepped toward the open door, the owner suddenly stood in front of me and asked in a confrontational tone, "Can I help you?" The way he said it made me feel like I was bothering him. I assumed he might be getting ready to close early, since there wasn't much foot traffic on Solano at that hour. So I politely asked, "Oh, are you getting ready to close? I can come back another time." His response? "Oh, you just want to pick through, huh?" I said yes and asked if I could take a quick look. He then stepped forward even more aggressively and replied, "Nah." So I turned around and left, feeling completely unwelcome. Back in my car, I sat for a moment trying to process how upset I felt. While I was gathering my thoughts, I saw a white man walk by and start casually browsing the Hawaiian shirts displayed outside the store. To my surprise, the owner's demeanor completely changed. Suddenly, he was pleasant--chatting, showing off more shirts, even going to the back to bring out extras. That man walked in and out of the shop comfortably, with zero tension or resistance. I watched in disbelief. How did the owner go from so unpleasant to so friendly in a matter of minutes? Maybe something was going on with him... or maybe he's just flat-out racist. If you own a business and don't know how to be kind to people walking through your door, maybe don't open it. If you're miserable, stay home. A simple, "Sorry, we're closing soon--come back another time," would've been fine. But instead, he chose to be rude. I bet he's treated with respect in other people's businesses--yet he can't offer the same. What a shame. read more

This man has blessed me and my children with his outstanding generosity, sometimes I visit him even when I don't have the funds to make a purchase. Ed is a very knowledgable owner with great knowledge and knows what he's talking about. He is also one of the nicest people I have ever met, treats his customers like true members of the clan. I was in a couple days ago-- the owner seemed like a he couldn't be bothered to answer a couple of questions . Further, prices quoted seemed vastly in excess of what seemed reasonable for the item. I hesitated to leave a review at the time-- it wasn't worth the effort; however, after walking past the business today, I overheard a very rude encounter between the owner and a customer in which, seemingly for no reason, he raised his voice. Based on other reviews, this seems to be a common trend. Frankly, I feel bad for owner-- it must be emotionally exhausting to constantly play the part of an old Scrooge. I recently made a purchase and mentioned to the very friendly and knowledgeable owner, Ed that I would like for him to contact me when he finds a Boston Terrier door stop: got a call--he had one--and visited again today! This is a really special place in a mostly big box store world. A great visit into the past (even the building itself is interesting), into a simpler time. So, this JUST happened (maybe 10 minutes ago)... I approach the window and see some vintage Pyrex I'm interested in. There is a "will return at" sign, but the door was unlocked/open, so I peek my head in and look around (the place has stuff wall to wall, Hoarders style) and ask "Hello?". I don't see or hear anyone, so I close the door and walk away. Two seconds later an older man opens the door and barks "YES?!". I asked him if he was open and he snaps, "YOU OPENED THE DOOR DIDN'T YOU?". At first I thought he was trying to joke or something, but after I stared for a moment in disbelief and it registered that he was glaring at me I took two steps back, I quickly said I was sorry and "take it easy". He made a weird hissing/psshhh sound and slammed the door. I will never return here nor would I advise anyone to make a purchase here. Went to this store once about 5 years ago when I lived in this neighborhood and never went back because the man in the shop was so rude and hostile towards me and my mother. Just came back to visit the old stomping ground and thought, the same grumpy old man can't possibly be here. Well yes he is, rudely yelling at customers perusing his outdoor display from inside the store. He is mean and aggressive and since every single item at this shop can be found at any one of the dozens of antique shops in the bay I don't know how he is still in business. Simply rude proprietor. I came in to check out the Aloha shirts a couple of weeks ago and he told me the shirts start at $25. I returned to buy a week later and he said the Aloha shirts start at $45. Thought I would try once more, so last Friday I walked in saying I wanted to check out the shirts and he snapped back "looking or buying?" I said it would be depending on the price. Today my family and I ate lunch at a restaurant a few doors down from this shop and after lunch my mom ran across the street to the bank. While waiting, my dad and I were looking at the few things outside the shop which all looked pretty interesting. I sat on one of the chairs outside thinking it was pretty cool. Within 30 seconds of sitting on it the owner came out and angrily said "Hey you!" I looked confused not sure he was talking to me so he said "yeah you!, Can you get out of the chair?" so I quickly stood and said "I apologize". He paused for a few seconds as I stood there and he continued "It's hard to sell a chair when there's someone sitting in it". Whoa! What an a-hole comment. I was already standing and had apologized. He just had to get that rude comment in there. Moments before he was so rude I had said to my dad, we should walk through when mom gets back- she would love that kind of shop. Well after his incredibly rude and unwelcoming comment we surely didn't enter his store. I was intrigued by his shop to begin with, it looked like it may have had cool things. Wow, if I had read these reviews before visiting I may have never set foot in here, and I would have missed out. Really unique items, difficult to find elsewhere. The things I've gotten here are among my favorite possessions. If you like vintage dinosaur figurines, this is the place. Prices may seem high but compared to etsy, ebay, or even a fancier vintage shop it's a bargain. I made the mistake of thinking this was a shop when apparently it is a hoarder's den with a storefront window with nice things on display as a tease, but you're not allowed to browse and possibly buy, unless you are looking for something specific to purchase and he can dig it up for you, There were things outside on tables so it appeared to be open for business, but when I tried to enter the shop I saw there was no pathway to walk in. The man brusquely asked what I wanted to buy, and I asked if I could come in and see what they have. I told him I'd seen the animals in the window the other night and made a special trip to come during the posted business hours. He asked what kind of animals I was looking for, and I said I like all different kinds, I'd have to see the selection and prices. He was so rude that I decided it wasn't worth it. read more

My 2 year old was looking at a plastic (child's) windmill outside, and he came out and yelled at her when she gently touched it. This store has been here for a couple of decades at least. I haven't been in in years, but a colorful outside display of Hawaiian shirts drew me in today. One gorgeous shirt attracted both Alan and me and he's very particular about the Hawaiian shirts he will wear. It looked to be his size, although they differ wildly. I went back this afternoon and brought it in to the owner, who was quite cordial, as he always has been to me. There were lots of other Hawaiian shirts inside, as well as jewelry, Revereware pans, and an assortment of random objects on the floor and on shelves, including one very cool rusty two handled meat chopper. I didn't ask the price, but it reminded me of a YouTube video I recently saw on Facebook by a Japanese man who picked up a rusty knife for $3, cleaned, polished and sharpened it and then demonstrated mad skills w/ it. I don't have those skills, but someone might. The shop is cluttered and it's hard to see everything, but I like it. It's an experience. I don't know that I would consider it a gallery as much as a very quirky antique store. The shirt was $45, which seems reasonable for the quality. It can be returned for store credit if it doesn't fit Alan and I will have fun searching for something else if it comes to that. Addendum: it fits and looks great on him! read more

I had been referred to the Rosebud Gallery, specifically owner Ed Forcum, as being knowledgable in the silver tea service I had inherited from my recently deceased mother. Mr. Forcum refused to help me in any way with my attempt to establish a "ballpark" value for my silver without first sending him $50.00, and ranting about how it had taken him "30 years to gain my knowledge." But, yes, it is impossible to look around because the store is so overstuffed, and the owner is VERY unwelcoming. I'm not sure how he stays in business. Yikes! If I could give this place no stars, I would. As I was strolling down the street, my 3-year-old son stopped in front of Rosebud Gallery to look at their basket full of dinosaurs. I told him to go ahead and pick one out so we could go inside and pay for it. As he was doing so, an older man stuck his head out the front door and said in a disgruntled tone, "may I HELP you?!" I was so taken back by his tone that I looked behind me to see if he was perhaps speaking to someone else. Nope. I told him, "Um, no, not at the moment." The man continued to give me this death stare and then replied, "Well, your child is just playing with those toys and knocking [the rubber dinosaurs] down. Are you going to buy something or not?" Well, hell, not after THAT kind of ridiculous exchange. Why have toys at a low enough level for children to reach and not expect them to play with them? And who, then, are the children's toys for if not for a child? What a strange man and a weird business model. I visited this store in Aug. 2013. I understand what people are saying about the owner. Your first impression is that he isn't friendly, but he is a nice guy and he is not fake. You just have to talk to him. He is very knowledgeable and his beautiful inventory is a testament to that. There is no junk in that store and it's packed. This store is a favorite of mine.
