    Home made sausage roll

As a West Londoner I don't come to New Cross that often, but the Rose is almost worth the trip in its own right. Actually, I am one of these annoying culture tourists who generally makes her way to some exhibition or event (Goldsmith's is just around the corner). Having walked past this beautiful and very inviting looking pub on several occasions, I finally ventured in on Saturday after an exhibition visit. It was the perfect summer's day and everyone was crammed into the large beer garden. We decided to move indoors after a while as the DJ made meaningful conversations almost impossible. I'm sounding like a moany old bag here, but how do the neighbours bear it?! There's music indoors, too, but more of the background volume type. The pizzas looked very good, but we opted for some bar snacks instead. Home made sausage rolls - perfect! Staff were super friendly and efficient - all you need on a hot summer's night.

An inviting front bar, offering a good selection of beers and ales

A year ago this was a smelly loud student pub, and now it's turned into a great regular go-to place for booze and food smack in the middle of New Cross. They boast a proper old-fashioned pizza oven and serve up thin crispy slabs of yumminess. The calzones are good although a bit on the bland side for me (I'm a big garlic fan). Don't let my spicy palate stop you, however, the mushrooms and spinach inside were fresh and tasty. I also recommend the fish pie, full of flaky flesh and nicely baked. Staff are generally pleasant and the service is good. Bonus feature: Huge back garden, featuring a space resembling a covered outdoor living room. With all this, a decent variety of beers and ales on tap, at reasonable prices, it's a recommended pub to drink up or chow down at.

While you can hang out in the crowd and grab a pint easily without that, if you want to dine in the quieter dining area with views of the water you may want to do so as well. Especially if you want the elbow room to enjoy such great food. The Mayflower is named after the famous ship carrying the early American settlers, and the church tied to this voyage is steps away where apparently an unmarked grave hosts the resting spot of the captain of that ship. It's candlelit and kind of romantic on the top floor with great views. For food, my wife had the chicken pie and I had the special of the day, lamb stew with housemade potato salad. It was warm, flavorful and delicious, sentiments my wife shared on the pot pie. We split an order of mac and cheese, and it was also delicious. Such great comfort food. I had a small scotch pour and an ale, my wife a glass of wine. I had a small port to pair with the sticky toffee pudding at the end which was terrific. My wife swears by Gordon Ramsey's recipe of the same but this one was hard to beat IMO.

We ordered onion rings to start, the breading on them was amazing! It was light and crispy as opposed to being heavy and greasy like a lot of onion rings. I also loved the curry ketchup that came with them. I'm not generally a curry fan, but it definitely worked with this dish. My husband got fish and chips. The fish was perfectly fried and the tarter sauce was obviously house made because it tasted very fresh and lemony. The chips were fine, but unremarkable in my opinion. For my meal, I ordered pumpkin walnut gnocchi. It was delicious! Just enough pumpkin without being overpowering. There was quite a bit of kale (I think it was kale, the menu didn't say) that came with the dish. It was very good, but probably could have been dialed back a little. The service was friendly and prompt. Definitely a great way to start our London vacation!

The establishment has a nice mixture of cozy and airy, which was perfect for a lazy(ish) Sunday. I hate to use this word, but I'll use it anyway (because I can't think of a better descriptor): the service here is "super" friendly, and very knowledgeable, particularly regarding the ales on tap. The barkeep gave us a few sample pours without waiting for us to ask, which we greatly appreciated. Because of that, we were more than happy with the pints we ordered. Moving on to the food: the roasts were delicious, in particular the pork loin, which was moist and flavorful. I enjoyed my roast beef as well. The Yorkshire pudding was wonderful and I might have been just as happy eating that alone for my meal, to be honest. The pub is in walking distance of the touristy areas of Greenwich, so it's easy enough to put some good food in your belly and continue on to your sightseeing, afterward.
