The Rose and Crown is a great Youngs pub and hotel up in Wimbledon Village. The inside glides seamlessly from a comfy bar area to sit and catch up with friends over drinks, to a lovely bright open dining area perfect for hosting big groups. They have a well laid out courtyard area out the back, which is a gorgeous sun trap during the summer months and always busy during Wimbledon Tennis fortnight! I've not stayed in the hotel personally, but friends who've visited have, and the rooms are clean bright and incredibly comfortable! This is a great pub in the heart of Wimbledon Village plenty of boxes to suit a wide audience.

Fab dessert

Covid or no, this is still one of the most comfortable- and comforting- pubs in London. The…read moreinterior is dimly-lit and rustic all around, complete with 'Lords' & 'Ladies' restrooms, a toasty fireplace, and cozy nooks to have intimate conversations in. The staff is still among the friendliest I've encountered in London- especially in a pub- and despite the current situation, not much has changed. Most places are now requesting that people pay a not-so-small holding fee (per person) in advance for the table, which one does not get back if cancelling on the same day; not so with this place. Booking was easy and the table was free. Prices were not so low, but more on that later. My one and only reason to eat in a pub, on any given week, is Sunday Roast. If you're new to London and don't know what this is, don't ask questions; just go and order one, already (on a Sunday). The Sunday Roast at the Crooked Billet is in my list of Top 3 Sunday Roasts in all of London. Whatever gravy/ sauce/ Yorkshire-something-or-other they're putting in there, it lends the whole meal the perfect balance of flavor, whether you're eating the veggie version or a meat-laden one. Of that, you have your choice of beef, lamb, or chicken. My personal favorite is the chicken; because you can never go wrong with chicken. As for the drinks menu, you have your usual round of stouts, lagers, ciders, and whatever else you alcoholics enjoy. I can never get away from my love of the sweeter drinks, so I always go for their ciders on tap; it compliments any meal perfectly, in my opinion. Don't judge. I know I said I would never order anything other than Sunday Roast at a pub, but that may have been half a lie. One of my friends can't help herself when it comes to dessert, and I am not one to stop her. As such a great friend, however, I'm not averse to sharing the calories and splitting the bill. So, I can attest to the sheer delicious perfection that is their Salted Caramel Pudding dessert with a scoop of ice cream. The others are great, too, but this one really stands out among the rest. Now, as to the unpleasantness: Given the current situation and all the measures that have been put into place, I feel that prices have gone up everywhere. I can't be sure if that's the case here, but between the 3 of us, my friends and I managed to spend a few quid shy of £100. Not unreasonable given all we ordered, but keep the tab in mind when going for all of those extra drinks; for your wallet's sake. Happy gorging!

But a trip to The Telegraph might just sway my opinion. As other reviews have mentioned, it's sold as a country pub in the city. And that's exactly what it is. It feels like a country pub. A very well-to-do one with children called Constance and Horatio running around, but still. The food was excellent, we shared platter board with everything from calamari to chorizo and bread. Everything tasty. Even if I couldn't bring myself to eat the prawns in their shells (the term 'brain juice' was coined that afternoon, shudder). Boards were a tenner each, which is really good value. Mains were around the £13 mark, and they all sounded super tasty. It got a little bit nippy, so we only stayed for one drink with dinner, but there's enough space outside that even if it were very busy, you'd likely still find a seat. You've got a five minute walk through the heath to get here, I imagine that passing trade isn't something The Telegraph have much of. That's OK, I'm plotting to go back and eat more of their tasty food.

It can get busy but we were able to find a table for four in the sun. There were dirty dishes from the previous patrons and took a little bit of time for them to get cleared. Order inside and give them your table number. 4/5 Pepperoni pizza - they have a pizza oven and it tasted very nice. Very good pizza. 3/5 Mixed Sunday roast - was just ok. Still not a fan of Sunday roast. 4/5 Burrata salad - nice cheese 3/5 Squid bites - just ok Would definitely take out of towners here. Great setting both indoors and outdoors.

We signed up for a tour that included this hotel. The location of this hotel is perfect for attending Wimbledon, especially during the tennis tournament. Definitely should attend if you have a chance. Back to the hotel, the hotel is dirty and the rooms have a lot to be desired. Carpet is old, no dressers in the rooms, no closet, armoire is in the room with enough to hang 12 items and a desk that they want you to use for your drawers. Wallpaper is dirty and old, bathroom was renovated with a very deep bathtub as is very difficult to get in and out of. Towels were worn and old and there was no extra towels left for your use. No amenities in the room other than a shower cap. Hallways leading to our room had torn carpet, and housekeeping left garbage bags on the floor in a corners. They had a shuttle service which was helpful and always available. The village is close as well and their property is very pretty with a garden outside and nearby park. Location is great but honestly going back to this hotel after a day at Wimbledon was depressing. Everyone with our tour felt the same way and was very disappointed with this hotel. If I had to do it over again I would stay in Central London and take the underground to the All England Tennis Club.

(In their classic "Funday-Monday" printed glory, of course.) While words like "classic elegance" and "serene tranquility" should be spilling out of this review, all I can focus on is how amazing my fishy dishy was! The smoked salmon was perfect with capers and a glass of pinot grigio, while the trout was so melt-in-my-mouth delicious that I believe all ability to speak was reduced to primal grunting for a good 10 minutes. (Austen would have been proud, to be sure.) This is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of central London and I highly recommend spending a day lounging on the patio, sipping white wine, and experiencing an afternoon of Hardy, Brontë (either sister is fine,) Eliot or Tennyson, in a Victorian setting come to life.
