The Dog & Fox is a landmark pub in Wimbledon. You can't miss it as you drive into Wimbledon Village from Wimbledon Common and the pub sells itself as the closest pub to the All England Lawn Tennis Club where the Wimbledon Tennis Championships are played. I'm not really a pub person but I was in the Dog & Fox last Saturday for a surprise 50th bithday party for one of my hockey team. We were able to hide in one of their function rooms until his wife brought him in and he got a pleasant surprise when he walked in. The pub were good hosts through the evening. The indoor space is large and has a spacious feel with tall ceilings. Half of the area is for drinking and there's a restaurant area for food. I didn't experience any of the food but there was some yummy looking fish which came past me with one of the waitresses. In the summer, the best spot would be outside under one of the canopy umbrellas with a cold drink in hand. Only hazard with al fresco dining or drinking these days is the drift of cigarette smoke coming over if you're downwind from smokers. This Wimbledon institution is a pleasant place to while some time away with friends

After a long day of watching tennis at Wimbledon during the Olympics, we knew that it was in our best interest to eat dinner locally rather than take the train back into the City and risk kitchens being shuttered for the evening. So, after about a 15 minute walk from the hallowed grounds of the All England we arrived in Wimbledon Village. After taking a quick walk through the area, we decided to stop in here. We left feeling quite happy with our choice. Upon entering the establishment you find that there are several rooms. The right side, upon entering, was more pub style, while the left side was more of a restaurant feel to it. There are also outdoor seating areas, though after a long day outside it was just getting brisk enough to want to sit inside. After sitting down, we ordered some beers to start as we looked over the menu. Our server was quite patient with us, as for some reason, it took a bit of time to come to a decision. We started with some olives and bread to start. It was a large sized starter. For my entree I chose the tagliatelle with butternut squash and goat cheese. It was a surprisingly rich meal, but tasty. The sauce was on the creamier side and the dish also included arugula (rocket) and pine nuts. Should my travels bring me back to Wimbledon, I would not hesitate to return to this establishment. It served its purpose quite well.

This is probably the pub that during Wimbledon gets the busiest. It sells itself as being the closest to the All England Club and certainly that combined with its terrace on the sunny side of the street makes this a great place to soak up the atmosphere if you haven't lucked out in the seats draw. All year round the food is pretty traditional pub grub and it's not bad at all. The fish and chips I had was pretty nice - the batter was just right and the chips were rectangular bits of fried potato - you know the ones. Our meal came to about £15 quid each so it's not cheap but there are always plenty of tables during the week and if you want to stay in the centre of the action this place is slap, bang in the middle of town.

I came here with a group of friends for a bite and drink before going to watch the dogs... Point being you question yourself reading on in curiously this pub is very accommodating to groups! Wheyyy, finally got there. Clean and warm and homely environment. The food, location in mind was relatively priced, the menu on my visit was relatively traditional game. My meal was cooked well, unlike some gastro pubs in which the meats are over cooked and chewy also neatly presented.

Had a fantastic lunch here. The Venison Pie was amazing. It was a Monday afternoon, so it was a little quiet, but the service was polite and speedy, and food was excellent. I also loved the high end decor.

Very poor and rude bar service. Bartenders inexperienced and unable to look up and serve customers in a professional and respectful manner.

But the bigger story is the food. This has truly become a gastro pub with a changing menu of tasty items. If they have the smoked haddock in a cheese sauce, just order it. It sure goes great with one of the local beers. And the starter Chorizo salad that I ordered was an awesome way to begin a dinner in this old but also new pub!

Food was previously great but prices where a little on the high side. They seem to have come down slightly from before so I look forward to trying the revised menu). The recent renovations have freshened the place up whilst retaining the wooden-floored, slightly bare feel so loved of modern London pubs. There's a good range of beers on draft, including usually at least a couple of well-kept ales (the local Wandle and Otter from Devon tonight, both well worth a try). Staff are friendly and knowledgable and the whole pub has a very welcoming feel. There's a small seating area out front but, like the rest of the pubs on Merton Road, it's not the quietest location. If only there was a garden out back I'd happily give 5 stars.

I went to this gastropub after a few recommendations from those in the know, so I was a little unsure that just turning up on a Friday night without a reservation would be permissible. At the very least I expected one other person eating there. Nope. In hindsight, I'm not too surprised. It might have been my rain-induced soppy mood. Or it might have been the fact that the pub splits on entry into a restaurant on the right and a pub on the left, which I found a little odd. Or maybe it was the young parents and their screaming kids that acted as an unwanted soundtrack throughout the meal. But probably it was the fact that everything on the menu was twice as expensive as it should have been, simply for the fact that it was runner-up in an award for gastropubs last year. The staff weren't particularly friendly or knowledgeable (they didn't know how big the dishes were or what was in them). There was not a thing on the menu that was simple pub food. My risotto (the only thing a strict vegetarian could order) had the word truffle in its fancy title, meaning it cost nearly £14. And it was too runny. When I walked in I expected, given its rep, that they'd do simple, classic pub food extremely well for a decent price. What I was disappointed to discover was that while the food was alright, it felt like they'd decided to do too much and be too fancy as a result of accolades and thereby forgetting that they are, in fact, a pub. Not a Michelin starred eatery. Forty quid (with no alcohol) for two courses for two people later, we left for the last time.

Listen, every pub and its mother does a Sunday Lunch. Only a handful are any good though…read more The Harewood Arms is the standard bearer. Fact. Tucked away in a quaint Fulham side street, the Harewood Arms has long since had a reputation for culinary excellence. So much so I'm not sure you can really call it a pub any more, that would be cheating. It's also the only 'pub' to have a Michelin star. Here's why. The Sunday Lunch here is off the scale excellent. They have managed to take all the things that make a Sunday roast a Sunday roast - the ridiculous excess, the gratifying satiation, the full on madness of the spread - and add enough fitness to make something truly memorable. Opulence abounds. Peacock feathers for chandeliers, massive gilded mirrors, the smells and sounds only proper wood panelling can give you, high corniced ceilings, space in abundance, a few stuffed animals in the mix, a sweeping bar. Victorian exuberance in every corner. The welcome is warm. The table is intimate. The food is proper. A thick paper menu adorned with curly writing tells us we're not leaving good old Blighty today. Completely unnecessary starters are ordered. Venison Scotch Egg from the 'snack' section. Grilled Scallop from the starters list. The Scotched Egg is moist and meaty with a real crunch to the crust. It comes with a punchy chutney and it's a delight but, to warn you, it's not a snack. 'Hearty' would be the word except I'm sure the heart might complain at being overruled by the eyes and belly. Scallops is pretty as a picture, presented in the shell and adorned with cucumber, shish and seaweed. We had already ordered soda bread and whipped butter and already we were wondering if we should order a crane winch to get us out of the place. Two thick slabs of nutty soda bread with butter a lot lighter than the feathers surrounding us. The roast itself is presented on a large board which groans under the abundance of its contents. It's a sight. Huge Yorkshires are delved straight into and the surprise comes when you meet the beef ragu encased inside. Luxury and decadence in abundance. We ordered the Cote De Boeuf (about the only thing that deviates from the Britishness) and it comes sliced into large chunks so you get the burnished black crust and the velvet red inside. Broccoli makes a pretty bedding plant on the board. The all important roasties have the all important crust and fluff within. We picked away but not before making sure staff were happy to give us a doggy bag. Once that was confirmed we were able to relax somewhat. The idea that any of this would go to waste is enough to induce a panic attack. Given that this is a place to hunker down, the wine menu is great, offering plenty of interesting choice and something for most pockets. Prices are no more than you'd expect - which is to say, it's not cheap - a meal and an experience worth every penny. Booking months in advance is essential if you want Sunday Lunch. Wandering in after a good Sunday walk on the off chance will end in disappointment. This is not a pub. It's a celebration of the heights the great British Sunday Roast can reach.

My friend and I came here on a Sunday and opted for two chicken roasts. The chicken was cooked well and accompanied by a huge Yorkshire pudding, gravy, roast potatoes and various sides, such as sweet potato puree. If I had one complaint about the roast it would be that the potatoes could have been slightly warmer, but 'tis a small blemish. No matter though, because the desserts took the experience up a couple of notches. I went for a fig and maple syrup bakewell tart with prune ice cream and my friend sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. One bite of each was all it took to seal this place's 5 star rating: warm, flavoursome and oozing quality. The sticky toffee pudding was particularly good, up there with the very best I've had. Elsewhere, there are plenty of other pluses. Though a Young's pub, it had a few other ales on draft, including the ever-dependable Samsbrook Wandle and new beer Pumphouse Pale Ale. The other food on offer looked very good too: tempting scotch eggs that sadly they'd sold out of when we took our seats; burgers in posh baps and string fries. The rest of the dessert menu was extraordinary, containing no less than five dessert wines, something I've never seen before on a pub menu. And perhaps most surprising of all, the food wasn't that expensive: about £13 for the roast chicken, £4 for the Samsbrooks and an admittedly fairly expensive but still worth it £7 for the desserts. Service was good and there's plenty of space inside. The only slight negative of the experience was that it took about 20 minutes to be seated. Really though, that's not bad compared to how long waits can be. And in this instance, it was easily worth it. As for the yuppies, it's true that there were a few here, but they were in the minority. I didn't find them particularly irksome - not like the masses of hipsters to be found out east. And indeed, arguably if it weren't for the spending power and preferences of this Fulham set, the food wouldn't be what it is, so heck, it could be said they're a force for good...
