I want to be fair here so I don't want my speculation to appear as fact...but our perception was that we were refused service because we were Americans. So, to my fellow Americans...don't waste your time if you don't want to feel unwanted (warranted or not).

A workmanlike menu, with a choice of perhaps a dozen mains ( including three roasts, it being Sunday). Roast leg of lamb, and specials of sole and wild boar sausages were all sampled and deemed to past muster - the lamb was tender and a very delicate pink, which is quite a feat in the circumstances. We didn't bother with starters, which was maybe a shame as there were some tasty sounding choices, including moules, and various plates of cured meats etc. The dessert I was pressed into sharing was a pretty stodgy cheescake, billed as "chocolate with toffee sauce" - again, more than serviceable, but slightly disappointing that the toffee sauce was not in evidence. A pretty decent wine list - a few glasses of Malbec were an aid to digestion/the gateway to a Sunday afternoon snooze. Fairly attentive service - we were gently reminded thaty the table was booked for another sitting after us, but only after we'd been there nearly two hours, and with a good fifteen minutes notice. I've not gone the whole five stars simply because I didn't really try enough of a representative sample of the menu, and I was mildly irritated by the constant buffeting from the buffoon at the table behind ( some tables are quite closely spaced).

As you walk in there's a standard local pub bar and TV to watch the game on. Then go through and you've got yourself a wonderfully cosy fire place and restaurant. I've only eaten a few times at the pub but can say extremely confidently that they have a great chef back there. The steak is just amazing and the Sunday roast is to die for! One of the best darned Sunday roasts I've ever had. Their truffle chips are inspired! The service is both friendly and so speedy! Customer service is top and the prices are reasonable. I made a reservation same-day but not sure if it was actually necessary because there were plenty of open tables when we arrived. We were greeted by the bartender and given the choice to be sat at a table or booth. They offer several different proteins for their Sunday roast and on this occasion I opted for the beef sirloin. Although the portion looks huge I did not leave feeling sickly. It ended up being the perfect serving size! I especially loved the Yorkshire pudding and generous helping of gravy atop my meal. For dessert I had the sticky toffee pudding with custard and it was to die for. I loved it so much I was craving it again the next day but sadly they only offer this treat on Sundays. As others have mentioned, their staff are not the most welcoming, but we didn't come across any major issues. I didn't get the vibe that they were excited to have us as guests so deducting one star for lackluster service. Don't let that deter you though, it's still worth a visit for the delicious food!

We wandered through residential areas and finally cut through the worlds smallest alley/pathway towards the river. We curiously ended up at the front doors of two adjacent houses. We passed through the gate noted to take us to the river, a by luck, there was the Bulls Head to the left! This is the only way to find this place. Once inside, this is a treasure on a rainy day - watching the trains on the bridge or rowers on the water. i can imagine it's a sweet spot on a sunny day too to sit outside riverside. check this place out!

I've yet to try the food but they do serve traditional pub grub between 12 and 5 Tuesday through Sunday. With a great atmosphere, warm and friendly bar staff and an excellent range of drinks, The Carpenters Arms is a brilliant place for a relaxing evening or a great stop-in after a hard days shop.
