Ever found a old school red phone box in a boozer? If you have, then it is likely you have been to the Cavern in Raynes Park, London SW20. The pub is really unique, with tickets for Bruce Springstein at Wembley in the 1980's perserved under the glass of the table top, or maybe you might rest your glass on the shoulder of a Beatle like John Lennon or Sir Paul Macartney. Rock and roll artfacts are the decor here.
So predictibly the jukebox is awesome. Although you will be shocked to learn that a pub that is a homage to rock doesn't put on regular live bands. One is a shame because there is a nice area that I usually sit at to watch the football with my arsenal supporting mates which would be a cracking stage for a live band. It has bars around it, is raised and keeps us penned in from the Chelsea supporting regulars.
Beers are Grolsch, Stella, Boddingtons, Strongbow, Guinness and Carling on tap and cost around £3 a pint. There is only one ale, London Pride, which used to be keep in such a great way that this pub used to appear in the Good Beer guide when Ray Palmer used to take pride in his work here at the turn of the millienium. Pies and pasties are available behind the bar, but that is the food, unless you like crisps and nuts. They have a Indian buffet tie-up with the well-known Bombay Brassire of wimbledon chase on a Sunday and thursday night just launched for a tenner a head. Whether or not this lasts into 2009 we will have to see how it works out.
But as a compact pub, only 2 shop units in size, you will not be able to not smell the curry. Watch out actually because there is a slope on the floor where it joins together. It is just one of the quirks of this lovely pub with framed rock and roll memorabilia in the tables, on the walls that has Sky TV and a warm welcome within 3 minutes walk of Raynes Park railway station. read more
