We were looking for Sunday Roast after the NFL game on Oct 31. We were tourists and The Crown had come recommended. Once we entered we were rudely shooed off with the claim that the restaurant was full and fully booked. There seemed to be empty tables however. We went outside and saw another party walk right in and get seated. Maybe they had reservations but it looked to us like they had been out looking for a place for a bit as well. I want to be fair here so I don't want my speculation to appear as fact...but our perception was that we were refused service because we were Americans. So, to my fellow Americans...don't waste your time if you don't want to feel unwanted (warranted or not). read more

Met some folk here for a Sunday lunch - not my manor, but I would not turn down going here again. Very buzzy - as other reviewers note, you'll need to book for Sunday lunch. A workmanlike menu, with a choice of perhaps a dozen mains ( including three roasts, it being Sunday). Roast leg of lamb, and specials of sole and wild boar sausages were all sampled and deemed to past muster - the lamb was tender and a very delicate pink, which is quite a feat in the circumstances. We didn't bother with starters, which was maybe a shame as there were some tasty sounding choices, including moules, and various plates of cured meats etc. The dessert I was pressed into sharing was a pretty stodgy cheescake, billed as "chocolate with toffee sauce" - again, more than serviceable, but slightly disappointing that the toffee sauce was not in evidence. A pretty decent wine list - a few glasses of Malbec were an aid to digestion/the gateway to a Sunday afternoon snooze. Fairly attentive service - we were gently reminded thaty the table was booked for another sitting after us, but only after we'd been there nearly two hours, and with a good fifteen minutes notice. I've not gone the whole five stars simply because I didn't really try enough of a representative sample of the menu, and I was mildly irritated by the constant buffeting from the buffoon at the table behind ( some tables are quite closely spaced). read more

This place does everything right. It's just a perfect pub. A cosy interior with original fittings and glass panels which is a rarity these days. Great beer on tap with different varieties available. The places just has the feeling that it is well run and well organised and just hums along. I've visited on multiple occasions and the food here is always excellent. A simple, changing menu that is unpretentious and delivers great food that is cooked with care. My sausage and mash was one of the best I have had. Always friendly and top notch service too. Definitely on my list of best pubs. read more

You'd have to be a bloody wanker not love to the food at The Crown. Operating a full scale restaurant kitchen within a traditional English pub makes it a perfect choice for people in search of more than just great beer. We enjoyed various salmon, lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes. We also sampled all of the desserts offered on the menu. A very popular spot, so you'll need a reservation. Mmmm... pub... You know you have enjoyed yourself on a night out when you cycle home and realise half way that you've forgotten to turn your lights on and you've been singing Harry Belafonte the whole way. I like the crown, actually, I love it. If you are looking for a non-pretentious pub in Islington (which can be a hard find) this is the place to be. A few locals and workers who have stumbled upon this traditional boozer. What stood out really is the staff, who smile, recommend and even have a friendly little chat with you while they make up your order. The Crown has one of those fabulous old skool bars in the middle of the pub that are open, and built out of wood, glass and brass. It's quite impressive. Their food is also lush. I stuck my teeth into a meaty burger and scoffed some rather fabulous chips. Wow, I've just used fabulous twice... three times in this review - I'm a fan! read more

I love this pub. When I first moved here from America I was disappointed at the state of the typical pub around my apartment. But then I found this gem of a place. Awesome. Tasty food. A little pricey for regular dinner visits but it's great every once in a while. The bar snacks are freshly made on site and tasty as heck. Wasabi Peanuts! The servers/bartenders are so cool and friendly. I feel right at home here and it makes me happy. read more

This is a classic pub just a few minutes walk from the trendy hubbub of Upper Street. Its always a good sign when somewhere off the beaten track is busy. There's quite a few tables and stools at the bar, which is situated in the middle of the pub. The service was friendly and the drinks reasonably priced for the area. We ordered a Vegetarian platter and a portion of chips between two, which was fairly silly really. The platter was enormous and tasted very good. I imagine this would be a very nice place to have as your local, and popping in for a quiet pint on a cold evening would be a pleasure. read more

I stopped by here on a freezing cold lunchtime while waiting to meet a friend locally. And I was so glad that I did! What a wonderful surprise it was! At first, I wasn't even sure that the place was open. I pushed the door and headed in. The first thing that greeted me was the sight of a magnificent interior. A truly splendid example of a classic London pub. Wood panels, snugs, ornate bar. Beautiful. The staff member that I talked to was really lovely. Friendly and efficient. I decided to go for some breakfast... So was delighted to see Eggs Royale on the menu. While waiting for my grub to arrive, I helped myself to the complimentary mint/lime/cucumber water. When my food did appear, I was really pleased with it. Delicious. If I am ever in this area again, I would definitely pay this place a visit! read more

A great local pub...and worth a short walk from the main road. We had a pub meal, the menu was small but just what we needed and we even tried the 'build your own bloody mary' - great fun. We had their burger and pint deal for £10. It was a great way to spend a lazy evening after work and will be back! I would not recommend for a date or business meeting. Lovely Fullers pub in the back streets of Islington. I was going to say 'little' but it is actually deceptively large, going back a long way inside. The decor is fantastic, old traditional dividers and bar paraphernalia that I am simply not expert enough to do justice to in my description. Add the small cosy little beer garden out front and Fullers beers and the result is a charming pub in (or outside of) which to kill some time with friends. read more

A quite marvellous little watering hole this one. The place itself is packed with original features including etched glass on the windows and doors, a big central bar with all sorts of little idiosyncrasies like rather odd wooden 'mantelpiece' with small windows which you can open or shut depending on whether you want the bar staff to see you or notrather unusual. It's got a beautiful ceiling and some lovely traditional green tiling round the fireplace. We were only in for drinks last night - good range and price was fine. The food looked great and I will definitely head back there to try it out. Service was very friendly and a nice bunch of people in there on the whole. Seats at the front of the pub are all wooden tables and chairs and then there are some old leather sofas at the back for lounging about on. Outside - its wooden picnic tables for the smokers in a small garden. All in - pretty much the ideal pub from my point of view - relaxed, friendly, a little bit of history to it and some nice design. read more

The best sunday roast dinner in the area! Worth a visit just for that reason alone but do book ahead-it is popular. There is also a summer terrace for drinking beer and some good wines on offer. Downside the staff-not too friendly in my opinion. read more

The Crown nestles nicely into the backstreets of Barnsbury, just a short walk from either Angel and Kings Cross. It also nestles beautifully in the pub market in the area. The Albion down the road has a far higher opinion of itself than it has deserved or earned. And most of the other local pubs are in the usual gastro pub vein. The Crown, however, really works for your respect: great, delicious almost restaurant food, good beers and good service. The decor is nicely old fashioned with its wood panelling. And a nice area outside for the summer / smokers. Beware, it is very popular so book ahead on Sunday especially. read more

Excellent little gastropub in Barnsbury. It is less busy than the nearby Albion and has excellent food for a reasonable price. Last nice we had home made hummus which was as good as it gets. Mains are £10 at entry level and go to around £15. The drink selection is decent, they have belgian and dutch beers bottled, and often have a special on tap. The pub is on a quiet side-street and has a small beer garden at the front. Often people spill out onto the road, last night people had brough mini-scrabble and were playing on the pavement. The only slight downpoints are that the drinks can be pricey - but that is a standard issue anywhere around Islington. This is definitely a top option to avoid the horrors of Angel. read more

Great pub for a Sunday lunch, just make sure you book ahead since it gets very busy. Bar staff always happy to have a chat and some banner with you if you are sat at the bar waiting for friends. Would highly recommend the roasts, this is the only thing I've had off the menu over the last 3 years, they never disappoint. Reasonably good wine list, good bar snacks and a nice bottle of Prosecco that won't break the bank. Worth a trip to IslingtonI live an hour away but it's worth travelling for. read more

This is a lovely spot with very nice staff and ambiance. We were very happy to stumble upon it on Christmas day.

We visited The Crown for a quick one before the matinee at the nearby Almeida Theatre. you cant go wrong with a pint of Fullers and for added enjoyment we ordered a perfectly cooked scotch egg and two falafel fritters served with tzatsiki. Both were delicious and set us up for an afternoon of high drama. We will definitely be back for mote food - and for more Fullers! read more

I'm not much of a pub girl (cue gasps of shock horror!) but actually had an incredible time here at a wedding last Saturday. The staff were run off their feet by our Jager-thirsty mob of guests, but still kept smiles on their faces - and *even* got chips for one of our younger guests, even though they weren't on the set menu and they were so very busy! This is a lovely little gastropub on a quiet street in Islington. I like to go in the warm weather, when there's seating outdoors.

A charming, friendly pub with excellent service and a quiet decent (but not fantastic) range of beers on tap. It's far enough off the main drag that it's not full of boisterous tourists or footie fans (no TV, in any case). The bartender made some spot-on beer recommendations. It feels like an upscale local, and it's family-friendly without becoming a creche. On our mini pub-crawl through Islington, this was one of the most charming spots. read more

A nice, unassuming gastropub in the backstreets of Islington, this is a good option if you can't face the horrors of the Angel. Full of Barnsbury locals, they do very good food for fairly reasonable prices. The dining room is cosy in winter and there's a nice, if small beer garden for the winter. Traveling to London on business I went to The Crown for a quick dinner and couldn't believe how delicious the food was. I enjoyed an amazing fresh salad that was so large I couldn't finish. That along with a pint hit the spot. If you are in the area, go! read more

This small wood-panelled pub is a 10 minute walk from Angel tube station and definitely to be recommended over the nearby Albion. In terms of seating, there is a choice of the outside benches, the wooden tables and chairs in the main room, or the few tables and sofas at the back. From here, you have the opportunity to observe the resident French chef create huge plates of tasty food in the open kitchen. The menu is not the cheapest but changes regularly and never disappoints, whether you sample the delights of meat or vegetables. Service is efficient and friendly. Of all the pubs in the area, this has to be the best one! read more

The ambiance was nice but nothing special to offer on platter. service was friendly.

I previously considered this the best sunday roast in the angel area along with The Albion. However having been back a couple of times in recent months I've been less impressed with the food. On both occassions the meat and vegetables have been very good but the roast potatoes a disappointment. The service has also been very slow, to the point that we waited half an hour to be offered dessert menus and when they did show up, half of them had gone cold. I'm not ready to write it off yet but will be revisiting other pubs in the area to see if my money would be better spent elsewhere. The Crown is still an excellent venue off the beaten track but needs to up its game if it wants that 5th star back. read more

Lovely pub in a nice tucked away location. They have a good choice of food including good veggie options. I'm told the Sunday roast is really good but as a vegetarian I miss out in this pub, unlike so many forward thinking (and business savvy) places in London who offer a Veggie Roast, this place doesn't - I even got a smirk from the waitress for asking! The roast potatoes are cooked in duck fat so veggies beware. I'd rather have a nut loaf or something similiar with all the trimmings than have a standard veggie dish on a Sunday when everyone else is tucking into a roast - I settled for a few sides (new potatoes and roasted veg). Nice pub but unfortunatley I won't be back, at least until they start offering vegetarians a decent option on Sundays..... read more

After work drinks with co-workers is great in this place. It's not too loud, so you can hear people talk. The atmosphere is traditional, smart, casual and classy. The drinks selection is good and there's some good unusual beers on tap. Haven't tried the food yet, but often see it busy with local Brits enjoying the nosh. read more

As the "5 star rating quote" says, this pub is as good as it gets in London. It's a lovely little pub, with impressive food and service. It's cosy in the winter and has a outdoor space in the summer. Located about 5 mins walk from Angel, so none of the riff raff hang out there - you can have a drink/meal without any hassle, though definitely book for the evening as it's a busy place with an ecclectic mix of locals and visitors of all ages and backgrounds. I wish it was a bit closer to where we live, but sadly no chance of us being able to afford the price of property around Cloudesly Square anytime soon without a lottery win... read more

Wonderful place! I lived within crawling distance of this place for a few years and it's certainly one of my top 3 London pubs. Fantastic atmosphere day or night, great setting on a lovely cobbled street. Drinks are averagely priced with some nice beers (Kirin etc.) but the food is the real highlight: restaurant quality with gastro-pub prices. Many items on the menu change every week and there're are always many items you could eat. Staff are always extremely friendly and talkative. read more

Slightly disappointing. Pluses: it's a pretty pub, the staff are friendly (if a little slow), the location is good, the food is cheaper than most other gastropubs locally, so it's good for a slightly more price conscious dinner out. Cons: the beer selection is limited (albeit what they have is good, this is a Fullers pub with only 4 taps of the regular stuff); the food is not that great (you pay your money). Between our table of 4, we had 3 courses each and there's not one dish I could honestly say I'd order again, which is not a good sign! Particularly disappointing was the venison pie, which should be an instant winner but was surprisingly flavourless, the pastry was not good, the whole thing was covered in some kind of sweet gravy, the mash was dry. That said, we had some relatives from abroad in tow, and they loved it, it definitely hit the authentic british pub experience for them! I'll be back, but for an evening pint (and probably a single at that, given the beer range ;-) ) rather than the food. read more
