The bartender was incredibly friendly and helpful! When I ordered one of their cask ales, she let me know it might taste warmer and flatter than I'm used to as an American (I'm a beer enthusiast who has been to England before so I knew this, but could definitely be helpful information to other Americans). My son was psyched to see they had J2O, his new favorite British drink. We ordered lunch from the Thai restaurant next door (the two businesses are connected) and sat at the corner table by the fireplace. The food was excellent, the beer superb, the atmosphere cozy and quaint. Everything I could hope for as an American looking for a traditional English pub. Of the many pubs we went to during our trip around England, this was one of my favorites.

The tube ride there was easy and the walk to the pub was very quiet which was a nice change from the busier parts of London. We had a reservation and arrived a little early. We headed straight upstairs and it was a little unclear where we were supposed to check in but got it sorted and we're seated by the window with a great view of the River. There was only one person working the tables, which I think was the manager. He was very nice but seemed a little overwhelmed and the kitchen seemed to get backed up a bit while we were there. It wasn't a bother to us as we didn't have anywhere to be but it did seem to bother a few other diners who may have been in a rush. For our meals we ordered fish and chips and steak and ale pie. Both were tasty but the pie was the winner by far. This is a great spot for the history and even better spot for the views if you're able to grab a spot on the patio just for a drink. Make sure to check out the noose as their nod to a bit of the backstory.

I made a reservation same-day but not sure if it was actually necessary because there were plenty of open tables when we arrived. We were greeted by the bartender and given the choice to be sat at a table or booth. They offer several different proteins for their Sunday roast and on this occasion I opted for the beef sirloin. Although the portion looks huge I did not leave feeling sickly. It ended up being the perfect serving size! I especially loved the Yorkshire pudding and generous helping of gravy atop my meal. For dessert I had the sticky toffee pudding with custard and it was to die for. I loved it so much I was craving it again the next day but sadly they only offer this treat on Sundays. As others have mentioned, their staff are not the most welcoming, but we didn't come across any major issues. I didn't get the vibe that they were excited to have us as guests so deducting one star for lackluster service. Don't let that deter you though, it's still worth a visit for the delicious food!

A few years ago the owner took out the pool table, ripped out the standard 1970s faux Victorian decor and generally turned the pub into a bland, generic suburban drinking hole. I know, I sound bitter but tacky decor and pool tables are what local pubs in London should be about. The one bonus of the refurbishment are the heaters outside which you can control yourself rather than freeze/roast to death at the discretion of a sadistic pub landlord.

There was a live band, playing good ska and old time rock and roll, complete with a trombone. People were dancing near the bandstand, but you didn't feel pressured to join in if you didn't want to. The layout of the bar was actually conducive to this scene, because you could easily walk down to and past the bar where even though it was crowded, you had room to sit or stand and enjoy your beverages. There are tables in the room beyond the bar, and there's an outdoor beer garden for smoking, and eating/drinking in warmer weather. As for beverages, it's a traditional English pub, with some cask ale choices, and the usual assortment of continental lagers. Unfortunately none of the new wave of excellent London beers is available (Kernel, Meantime, Camden, London Fields), but I'm hoping that changes soon. There's of course a full bar available as well. And food, but I haven't tried that yet. As for the crowd, it seemed to be a nice mixture of locals, possibly a few tourists from the nearby hotels that have popped up recently, and best of all, the hipster wave hasn't totally invaded this corner of Whitechapel/Tower Hill yet.
