I had someone call from our hotel and we got right in and there was a line outside. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is all great. Their breakfast goes from American eggs and bacon with the best potatoes to wonderful burrito type breakfast items. Their menudo is great and they have great Mexican meats as well. Lunch and dinner is about the same. They make Mexican style fish and steak that is just perfect every time. All of their Mexican dishes are just wonderful. You can't go wrong. They even have bottled water--never drink the water there, just don't. They have the best rice and beans. The service is great. They make you feel right at home and even if you don't speak Spanish, most speak English and you will figure it out because they will help you. The prices are fair for what you get. At dinner I consider it fine dining. It is all good and you will be happy. The place is also clean and super comfortable.

It has an old spanish mission look on the outside and walking in, you can immediately recognize that it is an impressive and popular place. The decor here is something to write home about. Beautiful wall fixtures, and well crafted local pottery and other artifacts, all around, everywhere. There is ample seating, that is well spaced out. Perfectly pitched Mexican music permeates the atmosphere. There is attentive staff that is so courteous, and welcoming. I wanted to eat lite, and I wanted to eat Mexican, so I chose the Yucatán Tamales. It comes as one pork and one chicken, both slim, wide rectangles, each baked in a banana leaf. They both had their subtle and distinct flavors. Comes with refried beans. The complementary salsas, the rojo and verde, were fresh and tasty. Service was outstanding. Another memorable restaurant in Tijuana, that needs to be filed into the "excellent" and "must go" folders.

For starters, this place is Michelin recognized, and was rated best breakfast in the world in 2015…read moreby FoodieHub. I told myself if I'm ever in the area again, I have to make an effort to eat at this place. Well, the opportunity arose as I was staying at a nearby winery. The biggest problem I encountered was finding a ride to get to this restaurant. Taxis are nonexistent in the area. Ubers are only in the area when someone from Ensenada requests a round trip to the area, so no they are not available to others. Therefore, I expressed my frustration with the front desk at my winery hotel and they took on the task of finding me private transportation. About 40 minutes later, they called my room to inform me that they located a driver. Unfortunately, he requested an inflated price for the to and from the restaurant. Private drivers down here know that you have few choices, therefore, they can ask inflated prices. Yes, I was in a pickle, but I really wanted to go. I did not rent a car because many of the roads hug cliffs and everyone drives fast, because they know where all of the mountain curves are. Being from Chicago, where we also drive fast but don't have mountain cliff roads decided to play it safe and let others do the driving for me. Anyhow, I debated, and in the end agreed to the expensive terms because when I going to get the opportunity again to eat at a place rated best breakfast in the world? How was the breakfast? It was absolutely delicious, everything was made from scratch. I ordered the cafe de la olla which interprets into coffee from the pot because typically it is prepared with raw sugar (piloncillo), canella (cinnamon sticks), and orange zest. How was the coffee? Delicious. I had some machaca (small bits of dried beef) with eggs which came with delicious refried beans. I also ordered the excellent chilaquiles with an egg and a side of bacon. I also needed to order the one thing most talk about on their menu which is the corn bread pancakes. They used the recipe for a typical corn bread sold down here called pan de elote to make the pancakes, and yes, they were excellent. Turning the batter from this recipe into pancakes was a brilliant idea. Also, I cannot leave out the great tasting freshly made corn tortillas that came with the food. The tortillas down here taste different from the ones back in Chicago because down here a white heirloom corn is utilized rather than the sweet yellow dent corn from the Midwest. Was it the best breakfast that I have ever had in Mexico, or anywhere else for that matter? Well, it definitely lived up to the hype the breakfast was amazing and I do highly recommend it. If you do decide to visit, my best advice is show up early because a line forms very early. I have been lucky to have also had other amazing breakfasts in Mexico and other places in my travels. The secret to this restaurant sits right behind it. On the restaurant grounds is an active ranch, which also doubles as a small zoo, where they source their milk and meats from. Yes, they raise their own animals which later become items on the menu. Does that fresh matter? Yes, it absolutely does make all of the difference. Does it sound cruel? Well, that is a whole other conversation. Let's just say the animals are treated humanely. All of the livestock looked happy as they roamed around the grounds. Unlike the way livestock is treated inhumanly in the United States in dirty overcrowded housing where some never get to see the sun or roam freely in the open air. Livestock in the US are constantly given antibiotics and growth hormones, also fed gmo feed with questionable health implications for those that consume them.

The space was really nice, and the weather made it even better. We started with chips and guacamole, both of which were excellent. The chips were clearly made fresh, not the usual bagged stuff, and it showed. The aguas frescas were also made from scratch. We tried the horchata and jamaica, and both tasted incredibly fresh and so good. I even asked the owner to confirm, and he backed it up, our taste buds didn't lie. For our meals, we had the chicken tinga enchiladas, which were amazing, like something mom used to make. We also tried the veggie tacos, and they were just as good. The nopales were especially impressive. The service was extremely friendly, the food was great, and the location made the whole experience even better. Looking forward to coming back, thank you!

Maybe we would just get some big slices of pie for dinner and watch our blood sugars rise.

Don't get me wrong, Baja has some amazing restaurants, and the fact that Michelin gave this place a nod is shocking. if you're going to advertise yourself as an expensive Michelin nod location and have photography that makes you look like a five star restaurant, your food and service should reflect that. The interior decorator must have been blind. Not a single piece of furniture or fixture for flat-ware matched. With ighting that made you feel like you were in a sterile hospital, perhaps they're preparing you to go to the emergency room after eating there. The meal started off with what we thought was ciabatta bread, but I think it was more like Chewbacca bread because it was as tough as a Wookie's skin. George Lucas won't be eating here anytime soon. We ordered four different appetizers to try a variety of their cuisine, and had planned on ordering our main courses. Let me tell you, we never even got to the main courses. We ordered the sopes without meat or cheese due an allergy, very simple request.....sopes with refried beans on it. First time it came with meat, beans, and cheese. We sent it back and said no meat and no cheese. Second time it came, it had meat and cheese and no beans......we said no meat and no cheese and sent it back. Third time it came, two of them had meat and cheese and one of them just had beans. And by the way, we speak Spanish. The waiter was extremely upset because we sent the food back twice, but how much clearer can we make it, if someone is allergic to something you don't serve it to them. Next came the octopus, not sure if they had just picked it up at the grocery store, but OMG, I can make it better at home. If you want Michelin worthy octopus, go five minutes down the road to Baja Med. The next appetizer was the empanada with the Wagyu beef, I was really hopeful, but perhaps they misread the recipe and put an entire stick of butter in there. Five minutes down the road you can get amazing empanadas at Baja Terra. Still starving, we got the crab tacos. We were excited to try it, but unfortunately, with the extreme amount of grease in them, it was hard to pick them up. They were useful for oiling the axle on my car. Michelin, do better, this place didn't deserve a second look, let alone a nod. Not even remotely close to being worthy of being on your list.
