Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down...so I sought some comfort food.
    Karl K.

When "Rainy Days and Mondays" aired on the radio on this dreary morning which was also, fittingly, a Monday, the die was cast: I was headed for some comfort food. Karen Carpenter's smooth, beautiful contralto voice singing this doleful song was all but directing me to do so.  In a month that has been 5.3 degrees F below normal and has seen 15 out of 25 days (including the last 8 straight) with more clouds than sun, it was inevitable that this Miami boy find something to shore up his flagging spirit.  I chose Rosa Mae's Cafe, where I found what I was looking for. I had the ground sirloin, turnip greens, blackeyed peas, lima beans, corn bread, and sweet tea. The ground sirloin with gravy and onions was delicious--just the thing I was looking for. Let's face it: the vegetables were canned. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. All of them had a wonderful, comforting flavor that really hit the spot. The corn bread had a nice taste but was really dry. The sweet tea was about average. The service was friendly, but the price was a tick high. I am awarding 3.5 stars and rounding up to 4 because they met my need for some home cooking without the hassle of doing it myself. The forecast is bleak for sunshine--the rest of this week looks to be mostly cloudy.  Looks like I will be seeking some more home cooking.

Been eating here for years, always good...until today. Huge disappointment. Walked in and placed to go order, waited 30+ minutes on food; everyone is short-staffed these days, so I was being patient. Owner finally asked what I ordered, went to kitchen and returned immediately with my order. On the 12 min drive home, I got to wondering how long my food had been sitting in the kitchen. Yep, As you can see, my chicken wasn't even 100 degrees...on top of that they shorted me a side item, and the seafood portion was small. I did the right thing and called restaurant to share my dissatisfaction; owner had stepped out...Left my number for a callback. No call yet. If I wanted pasta I had to heat before eating, I would have opened a box of Stouffer's. If you want an adequate portion of seafood, visit Sunrise Diner on Randolph St. Will I go back? Depends whether proprietor calls me back.

Just Simply Great Food Jimmy grew up in the business and is doing a great job here. Always nice friendly service and good prices. Very wide range of options for you to check out. My favorite things are the marinated beef strips on a hoagie or as an entree and any of the many burgers. Also there are beer specialsIf you were so inclined.

We haven't visited this place in over a year, in fact we almost forgot it was just down the road from our house! But, to say the least, it is a wonderful FAMILY restaurant. I love that there are daily specials offered so you can try something new and save a few hard earned bucks. The inside is cozy with natural sunlight coming in, tall ceilings in the very center, and tables and booths nestled together in rows. The wait staff is friendly and easy going, always willing to help out with the menu, which is quite extensive. If you aren't sure what to eat, the menu may complicate your decision because they offer everything from soups; hotdogs; sandwiches galore: roast beef, chicken, bbq, burgers, chicken salad, tuna salad, clubs; loads of veggies to choose from; pastas; seafood; and entrees like smothered chicken, beef tips and rice, pork chops, and country style steak. There is definitely something for everyone to enjoy at Rosa Mae's Cafe and at an affordable price. I recently enjoyed the daily special, which was beef tips and rice with 2 sides, choice of bread, and tea. I chose baked beans and fried okra for my sides, cornbread, and sweet tea. Everything was served hot and fresh, the meat was tender, the rice fresh and soft, okra nice and crunchy, and the sweet tea was southern sweet, just right. No complaints at all! If you're ever in the Thomasville area, I'd recommend stopping by sometime. Oh and by the way, if you happen to save a little room for dessert, there's always something baked up fresh, sliced, and ready to go. I personally favor the red velvet cake but I'm sure their pies will make a perfect ending to your supper too...

Part of the seating area - colorful, a little worn, decorated from an eclectic view point, somewhat dimly lit.

Rosa Mae's is one of those small Southern town, fried green tomato, kiss-my-grits kind of diners - frequented by the locals, distained by the foo/foo crowd and the drive-by grazers. All in all a solid, relaxing place to grab a country cooking meal - that is what they offer, and they do it well - with good service, and a nice smile. The restaurant has some age on it, as do many of the diners here - remember, follow the blue hairs for value meals. The interior is a bit of a maze, a little dimly lit, but comfortable, relaxing. The menu is broad for a place this size - a nice list of sandwiches, including burgers, hot dogs (really, really good!) chicken salad, tuna salad, BLT, Flounder, Grilled Cheese, Hoagies, and more - and even an Open Face Roast Beef, and an even more interestingly, a Country Style Steak Sandwich. Variety of meat & 2 plates - Fried Steak, CS Steak, Chicken Tenders, Pork Chops, Chicken Livers, Beef Liver, Veal Cutlet, Ham Steak, a nice assortment of Fried Seafood, and even Chopped BBQ. Daily specials are available, and they offer over 20 side dishes to accompany these choices. Some Italian items - Spaghetti (a number of different ways, including Greek), Lasagna, Cheese Manacotti, Veal Parmesan, and yes, even more. Nice selection of salads for those wanting something lighter - not sure why, but some do. The Fried Steak (Chicken Fried Steak to me) was excellent - right up there with Smith Street Diner & Moose Cafe in G'boro - and a nice portion. The Fried Chicken Livers were also well sized, and delicious - crusty on the outside, tender and tasty inside. The Fried Okra was very nice, as was the buttered Rice with gravy - the Pintos were bland, and the Fried Squash was not memorable. Cheese Biscuits are nice - rolls, not so much. Chili dog was very, very, very good - great meaty chili with rich flavor, nice weiner, and a soft bun - at $2, a little hgh, but awfully good. They also are a little different for this type restaurant in that they offer beer & even a small selction of inexpensive wines. Thanks to Sharon P. for the call - was worth the short trip.

We ordered the Arancini di Riso for an appetizer and it tasted delicious. We just wish we had 4 instead of 2. I ordered Salsiccia pizza and it tasted wonderful. I appreciated the balance of the dish and that I had plenty leftover. My husband ordered the Beef Short Ribs Barbaresco and said the short ribs were tender and the tomato jam added a sweet note. I also had Sparkling Strawberry Lemonade and it tasted delicious refreshing and was a great option for those who don't want alcohol. Our server for this experience did a wonderful job and I would recommend this place to others.

The tagliatelle was not made with ragú that was marinara. Where was the red sauce?! It was like a light beef broth with noodles from chicken noodle soup. The nonna's baked ziti was a bit disappointing as well. It tasted as if nonna was cooking for someone with high blood pressure and didn't know how to substitute salt for better seasonings. Also why wasn't the Italian sausage baked within the baked ziti? Why offer a meat option if you're not going to add it in. The arancini was cheesy but it lacked the creaminess that it should have that adds to the flavor. The creamy burrata and prosciutto was probably the star of this experience. It was tasty, spicy, and delicious. The server was nice and prompt so I did enjoy her.

Location was beautiful! However, once we were seated they gave us water and came back 10 minutes…read morelater and gave us only drink menus.... 15 minutes into the service, we finally received actual menus. Only two other tables at the time, so not busy at all. Service was not great. Very weird vibes in there with the staff and they seemed to not want to be there. Food was way too overpriced for how average it tasted. The sauces were very watery and food was insanely salty. Our whole table came home and stayed in the bathroom all night. We definitely thought the all the food was frozen and sauce was just poured on top. Has lots of potential, but this was not a good experience.

Many people had told me about La Cava but most had not been there or "had always wanted to try it…read morebut never made it there". We fell into that later category, but finally got to make our first trip to La Cava to celebrate a birthday with 7 friends! To start, the most obviously unique aspect is that the restaurant is inside an old church! It is neat and the setting was great with the stained glass windows and large vaulted ceilings you would expect. Unfortunately for me the service didn't quite live up to the ambiance. We did receive our first round of drinks pretty quickly, however our glasses were empty for long enough after, that one from the group finally just got up and ordered a drink from the bar. When we did finally get our drink order taken, a couple waiters and waitresses took them together which just further complicated things. Similarly while we did not have drinks we were waiting to order our food for long enough we started wondering if they forgot about our table. For an Italian place with a decent emphasis on wine (they have many many bottles of wine all around the dining room) I would have liked to see a bit more of an Italian centric by the glass menu. They have a Chianti and a Montepulciano for reds, but could be a cool way to introduce people to some new wines instead of the same old California wines. As for the food, again, it was not bad, but with some tweaks could be something really special. I had the Veal Saltimbocca. The taste was fine, but the presentation left a lot to be desired. The veal was roughly the same thickness as the prosciutto topping it, and the sides of home fries and bland spinach were not great. I did love the sauce it was served with though. I heard similar complaints about the chicken gismonda from our group. However the beef stew and the Swordfish got pretty good reviews! Overall, I don't want to say it was bad, I could just see it easily being so much better. I would like to return and likely will to try some different things but will set expectations a bit better.

Meaning, the service matched the ambience and price point. The wait staff may actually have some experience or training in service above a diner. The food was good. Not great. The side salad with house made Italian dressing was fresh and the dressing was delicious! The bread sticks were homemade but chewy. Almost too chewy to eat. They were either old or left out too long. Main dish was the Seafood Mediterranean. Would liked to have had more than 2 pieces of shrimp in my dish and more than 2 scallops. The dish used more ratio of baby clams and muscles. Was served powdered Parmesan cheese like you get in a pizza parlor or grocery store spaghetti isle. And the dish lacked overall flavor but wasn't bad. Dessert was Tiramisu. It was good. The table next to me sent their plate back, didn't want it cooked longer and didn't want a replacement dish. Not sure what was going on there but the restaurant did offer choices to make it right. Also, the manager was going around asking how everyone's food was. Overall it's a good dining experience with good food. Management here wants you to have a good dining experience. I would like to go back to try more dishes and would recommend.
