It's really hard in Austin Texas to find good mental health services. I came to Roots at the recommendation of my provider at Baylor Scott and White after several years of being unable to get on the list for counseling services, but to tell you the truth I'm going back to BSW because I felt like my practitioner there cared more about my mental health than my Roots therapist did. Every meeting at Roots felt cold and impersonal. When I did open up about struggles all I received was a "thank you for sharing" with no insight or plans to address anything I was going through at future meetings. They were not at all shy about charging for canceling my last appointment same day. They didn't even bother to ask my name or any reason why I'd be terminating care. No offer to switch providers just "we have your info" and that was it. read more

In my two years as a patient at Roots, I experienced a staggering amount of billing errors and communication issues.  To all current/future Roots patients: I STRONGLY urge you to cross-check every bill with your insurance. When I started digging, I realized Roots had been overcharging me for the better part of a year. After countless messages back and forth on their inefficient messaging app and lengthy calls with the billing manager, it got resolved. I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. However, the billing issues continued. On more than one occasion I was sent a bill by error, saying I owed $150. As others have stated, you unfortunately cannot just call their office to speak with someone - so you're left to send a message and hope someone answers in a timely fashion. Roots eventually blamed their billing system and recalled these accidental bills that went out (evidently to many patients), but I do wonder how many folks just went ahead and paid it unknowingly. Same goes for the consistent overcharging - I worry that other folks simply don't have the time to check every bill that comes their way, and end up overpaying. Another note to fellow patients: be sure to confirm that your provider is authorized under your insurance before every session. I was surprised by an unexpected charge for Dr. Turnipseed "overseeing" a routine session (for the record, I've never met the guy). Turns out the provider I saw that day was not yet authorized under my insurance, and required her notes to be reviewed by Dr. T - and I got charged extra for it. This was completely unknown to me until I received a bill that was higher than was typical for this very routine appointment. Roots was unsympathetic, and told me it was my job as a patient to understand my insurance. I believe such things should be communicated to the patient.  More billing/insurance issues piled up as time wore on, to the tune of several hundred dollars. Yes, it eventually got paid back, and I credit this to my persistence and follow-up. It often felt like the billing manager was more focused on proving me wrong than trying to resolve the issue.  Many before me have detailed the communication issues Roots faces, so I won't go there. I will note that on two different occasions I showed up for an appointment that had simply never been entered into the system, requiring it to be rescheduled. To their credit, they were apologetic and helpful both times. Enough of these small issues over time, however, starts to wear you down. I gave two stars instead of one, because their facilities are nice and I enjoyed working with several of the providers. I strongly encourage anyone considering care at Roots to read all reviews. Others have mentioned that Roots offers incentives folks to give good reviews - I can't say for sure if this is true, but I do know they had a prominent "ask us how to get free merch!" sign in the office a while back. My advice would be to take those 5 start reviews with a grain of salt, and look into the many other professional, well-run practices in the Austin area. read more

I am of an age where I could not tell you how many psychiatrists I have seen over the years, I can only say that Dr. McKay is the best of the best. He is professional, compassionate, and perceptive. He makes me feel that I am intelligent enough to have insight into my condition, and that we are working together toward a solution -- which I have found is a very rare quality. I feel valued and respected by him. Dr. McKay suggested that I get ketamine injections for my depression, which has been persistent and not very responsive to medications. I am part way through my treatments, but I am already feeling noticeable improvement. The RNs and MAs are attentive and very knowledgeable here. They treat me like a queen, every time I see them. Personally; if I have done my research (and I have), then I have no fears or worries. But I can see how the kind and reassuring manner of the staff would be a great comfort to someone who is uneasy. I did a -lot- of research before trying ketamine. When I am at Roots Behavioral Health, I feel that I am among people who know what they are doing from the inside-out. They are very well-informed and do not hesitate to answer your questions with courtesy and thoughtfulness. I feel well taken care of and completely safe with them. And - thank heavens - they take most insurance!! I don't think you can find better care than at Roots Behavioral Health, unless it is at their other location, lol! read more

Roots Behavioral Health is defrauding myself and my health insurance company. Aside from the issue of feeling like my original provider was not trauma informed, requesting to switch providers three times over the span of a week and a half until someone finally called me back, today really was the icing on the cake. For the past year that I've been coming to Roots Behavioral Health, I've been primarily doing telehealth appointments. It's very routine - I get a link to my telehealth appointment right before my appointment time, I join, the session begins. I've never been instructed that I need to visit a portal - in fact, they've switched portals and I've changed numbers during the span of time that I've seen them and I've never had any issues getting my link. I had a virtual appointment at 9 AM with Emma Hovey. I never received a link to the telehealth appointment via text or email, so I figured she might be running late. At 9:35 I start to get concerned so I called the office. I'm told that I need to reschedule my appointment because it's too far past the original appointment time. I told them that I never received a link, I was charged for the appointment about an hour before the appointment time, I've been waiting by my phone. Then I'm told that the link is "a courtesy" and that I needed to access it in the portal (again - this has NEVER been the order of operations, I've never had issues receiving a link to my appointment, this has never been instructed to me.). When I told them that I needed a refund because this was fraud, I was told that they'd "put a request in and the office manager will call me". Which is extremely frustrating because when I wanted to change providers, I had to call three times in order to get a call back. On top of it - if you take money from a patient and their insurance company, never show up to the appointment and never provide access to that appointment, you are defrauding both that patient and that insurance company. That is illegal. Period. I'm on a medication that I need to be consistent with and I just weened off another medication that this provider warned me of the difficulties with that. To disregard patients that are on brain chemical-altering medication, defraud them, and then to gaslight them... is actually criminal. Do better by your patients. You do not belong in the healthcare space if you're knowingly causing harm to patients. Again, DO BETTER. read more

While I've never met Dr. Turnipseed, I've had positive experiences seeing two of the PA's who work with him. They also provide KAP, so that's pretty unique. They are in network with Aetna, but still expensive if you have a deductible plan. However, finding a psychiatrist who takes insurance at all is difficult, so that's a big positive. It is really hard to get in quickly at the main office on IH 35, but it is not as hard to get an appointment at the new location at Lost Creek. Appointments are 20-25 minutes, so have any questions you have ready before you sit down. Make appointments in advance, so you're not stuck waiting when it's time to refill your prescription. read more

Came here and found a fantastic PA to help find the right meds and manage them. Was also interested in trying KAP. It's a long wait for KAP, I think I had to wait maybe 8 weeks? Had my first infusion today, and it was a wonderful experience from the moment I walked in. From the front desk to the medical staff and my therapist and the PA in today's session, every single interaction was amazing. Each person was kind, gentle, friendly, welcoming, compassionate, and knowledgeable. Everyone made me feel safe. The environment is wonderful, and a great deal of thought, care, and effort were put into making sure the session was great. I feel very lucky that the rest of my sessions will be here. With an ever increasing emphasis on mental health in society these days, this place continues to rise and shine above all the rest. We have seen them go above and beyond to care for myself and other family members. Specifically, Amelia is an amazing PA who thoughtfully and compassionately went on a search to find the right medication for/with me. After failures to find such a medication, ketamine therapy has become the most useful tool in my mental health toolbox to date. Along with receiving psychotherapy from Leslie before and after the ketamine, it has become a wonder drug that has definitely turned things around for me. Leslie is compassionate, kind, insightful, calm, and articulate. However, a very important unsung hero of my entire success and experience at Roots is the medical assistant Mercedes. Her job may seem simple, to administer ketamine and monitor my vitals, but she treats the entire process with such care and kindness. She brings humanity to what could be a very clinical experience. She makes what is initially scary to some feel safe. She is warm and considerate, and when she is there, I am secure, knowing that I will be taken care of. This has allowed me to focus more on the experience and to go through the experience open minded and wholeheartedly, and I feel like because of her and Leslie's perfect tandem efforts I get more out of it. Similar to the experiences of Britt C, Geez P, Marshall S. and two other Yelpers who were not recommended reading, I was unable to get an appointment due to technical failures on Root's end. Whenever I needed help and would phone the Lost Creek Location, my calls/voice messages were ignored. Thus, when I arrived for my appointment, it did not exist!!!!! I spent an hour with V, their very pleasant office manager, trying to conquer the forms required for an appointment. An hour and a half later- I finally left the office with a new password and a new appointment. I filled out the necessary forms last night for my appointment today, and even received a confirmation email about my submissions being complete. Alas, I had no appointment because Roots had no record of the entries I had made last night! I have been diligent about my mental and spiritual health. I have sought the best in Psychotherapy, Meditation, Psychiatric medicine and most recently, Ketamine assisted therapy. In EACH situation, My phone call was ANSWERED and my appointment, secured. NEVER have I experienced worse customer service. I do not blame the young people with whom I interacted. I blame the technology of your phone system and your patient portals. They simply cannot replace human interaction and customer service. I haven't actually been seen by any of the doctors at Roots Behavioral Health yet so this review is purely for the new patient coordinator Scarlett and the haphazard systems the office has in place. There are not one, but two different portals for new patients to create profiles and share information which was the first thing I found to be confusing. The second and most obnoxious aspect of my experience was the multiple forms of communication, they text you, they email you, they send you messages in the patient portal, they call you. Have a preferred form of communication? Too bad, they're in the business of making the patient onboarding experience as stressful as possible. I filled out all of my new patient paperwork 3 days prior to my appointment, or so I thought. There were two questionnaires in a different portal that still needed to be completed which I did right away as soon as I was informed, when I called the office back to confirm I had done everything correctly I was told that someone would call me back. I requested that someone other than Scarlett return my call because she was incredibly rude and condescending, no one called me back. My patient portal showed my appointment was still scheduled and all forms were complete but about 20 minutes before my tele health appointment I still hadn't heard from anyone at the office or been sent a link to join the appointment. I gave the office a call to figure out what was going on and I was put on hold. After 30 minutes on hold I hung up and spoke with Gregor who initially told me he couldn't see my paperwork had been completed, after digging around he eventually found everything and apologized but told me my appointment had been canceled. TLDR: After waiting 3 weeks for an appointment, doing everything on my end, the appointment was canceled and I was not so much as sent a text or email to reschedule or notify me of the cancelation. I am appalled that a medical office would treat patients this way and I highly recommend avoiding dealing with this office and their incompetent, condescending office staff. The 1 star is for Gregor who made my initial appointment and was very kind then as well as when I called on the day of, he is the only person to have apologized for anything. read more

I am very disappointed with my recent experience at Roots Behavioral Health. I have been a patient for almost 4 years now and I haven't had any negative experiences until now. I was diagnosed with a mood disorder earlier this year and have been taking medication for it. Unfortunately, I am without insurance this month and cannot afford the medication I've been prescribed. I also just ran out of the medication. I have called the office, left messages and reached out on the patient portal to express my concerns about this matter and have asked for help. I have not received any follow-up calls and it's been over a week. I'm frustrated by the lack of care in such a serious and urgent matter and not sure what to do at this point besides leave a review here. read more

Scarlette was always nice. I booked my first appointment for the end of 08/2020. I did all the paperwork on line. I got a call being told an earlier appointment opened up and if i would like to take the next day appointment. GREAT sure. I kept being told my Clinical History forms were incomplete. I went back and copy and pasted NA in every slot as requested. I got to the question, Have you ever attempted Suicide? If you answer NO, then you can skip the rest of this form. So i scrolled to the bottom of the page AGAIN and I clicked submit. While at work i did get several calls from Scarlett but I cant get to my calls until after work. By that time I get an email saying that my clinical history form is incomplete and now they had to cancel the earlier appointment they offered me. AND they had to still charge me the $100 cancel fee. I am amazed. So much for patient care and mental health. Their portal and forms are flawed and set you up for failure. But i guess in a pandemic people are made of money so charge me the $100 anyway. Truly sad. This was going to be my first time seeking help, something ive avoided for so long. This is how it turned out. Im done with this place. Lol i didnt even get to start. read more
